Just imagining Terry Riley in Japan with the Kronos Quartet coming all the way from the U.S. to celebrate his 90th birthday, is a thrilling scene. Help us make imagination a reality in time for his birthday on June 24, 2025!

In response to a call from the Kronos Quartet, which has supported Terry Riley with its performances for many years, we, the committee members who gathered voluntarily, have been preparing for the "Terry Riley Kronos Quartet Matsuri (Festival)," also known as TRKQ Matsuri).

 

On the memorable 90th birthday of Terry Riley, who transformed the face of music in the second half of the 20th century, we would like to realize a birthday concert in his beloved Japan. However, a major obstacle is the lack of funds to pay for the concert venue, procure the necessary equipment, and pay for the artists' accommodations and project management.

 

For us, the crowdfunding system, which connects the small efforts of each individual to the realization of big things, seemed like the perfect way to make this project a reality.

 

We need your support.

 

And please come to the concert venue to congratulate him in person. For those who cannot attend the concert, we will be offering live streaming viewing right for the June 28th performance (featuring the two stars performing together and improvising!) as a crowdfunding gift.

 

The Kronos Quartet, the top artists who have supported Terry Riley, a founder of minimal music, for many years, will celebrate his 90th birthday with a "Matsuri" concert in Japan! If this excites you, we hope you will support us make this project a reality.

The highlights are, without a doubt, the long-awaited Japanese premiere of Sun Rings, which was cancelled twice due to the Corona disaster, and the dream collaboration of Riley and the Kronos on the same stage!

 

※On June 24, the day before the performance and the day of his 90th birthday, we plan to hold a Birthday Performance for related parties only in the foyer of Kanagawa Prefectural Music Hall. Although the number of slots will be limited, we will also offer an invitation to this event as a crowdfunding gift.

 

 

Concert celebrating Terry Riley's 90th birthday by Kronos Quartet

　　Terry Riley, "The Sun Rings" for string quartet and chorus

　　Recorded space sound for (Japan premiere)

At Terry Riley's own request, "Sun Rings" will be performed for the first time in Japan.

This piece was scheduled to be performed for the first time in Japan at the Prefectural Music Hall during the 2022 tour, which was cancelled just before the performers were due to arrive in Japan due to a delay in visa issuance following the coronavirus pandemic. The Chor Yae yama-Gumi, which was scheduled to perform with the quartet, has also joined the executive committee and is aiming to make a comeback with the Kronos Quartet. Terry Riley will also be in attendance at the Japan premiere from Yamanashi

The Kronos Quartet and Terry Riley will perform together, with improvisations by both.

It will be a rare opportunity for a composer and a performer to perform together on the same stage.
