【荒廃した牧場再生】動物と人が集う美しい谷のファームビレッジづくり

まだまだ発展途上にある私たちのFARMは、落ち着きのない(自身の理想を追う行動力豊かな)オーストラリアのタスマニア生まれ・NZ育ちのオーナーと、日本人のスタッフ、2頭の犬でチームを組み、失敗を重ねながら日々悪戦苦闘しながら賑やかに運営しています。

 

 

私たちのFARMは、北海道南部の日高町と新冠町の境界部、美しい川の流れる谷あいにあり、Regenerative Agriculture(リジェネラティブ アグリカルチャー)という循環型農業のひとつの考え方にそって、様々な家畜(黒豚・羊・ヤギなど)を自然放牧しています。

 

ここではいわゆる経済動物といわれる動物たちがより人間に近いところで、四季を通し暮らしています。『“その食べものがいったいどこからきたのか？”ということについて知り、考える場となる』ことも私たちの担う責任の一つだと考えています。

 

またこのFARMでの実践を通して、小さな牧場・農場がいかにして利益を上げるか、日本の田舎が直面している様々な問題(過疎化、高齢化、捨て去られた農場、先の見えない将来への不安)をいかに食い止めるかを、牧場運営を営む傍らライフワークとして探究しています。

 

旧競争馬牧場を買い取って開設したこのFARMもまだ成長の途にあり、３年前に導入した家畜たちとともに悪戦苦闘しながら、ゆっくりリフォームを進めています。

 

太平洋側の眺望豊かな海岸から私たちのFARMまでの道は、さまざまな牧場や田んぼの間を縫うように蛇行し美しい景色を見せてくれます。

 

かつて、この小さな町にも様々な店舗や学校などが立ち並び、栄えた時代がありました。現在残っているのはガソリンスタンド、郵便局、数十軒の素晴らしい家と農場、そして放棄され朽ちた家々や農場です。

 

私たちのFARMは、もともとは4世代続いた古い牧場でしたが廃業してしまい、その後を受けて私たちが農協を通じて購入することとなりました。日本で外国人が牧場・農場を所有するのは難しいのですが、農協は現状を打開するため新しいアイディアや新しい血が必要だと考え、その思いを私たちに託したのかもしれません。

 

そして北隣の牧場について。こちらも3世代続いた素晴らしい養豚場でしたが、2年前にオーナーが体調を崩し廃業。現在はご家族は牧場を後にし、オーナーが時々防犯を兼ねて建物を見に来てくれている状況です。牧場は競売にかけられたのち、私たちがこの春に買い取り、今回のプロジェクトへと物語は続きます。

 

こういった廃業・放棄せざるを得ないといった現状が、この地域のみならず日本のあちこちにあるのは確かです。私たちは、地域の小さな牧場・農場がいかにして利益を上げるのか、直面する様々な問題(過疎化、高齢化、捨て去られた農場、先の見えない将来への不安)をいかに食い止めるか。そしてこれら問題に対しての、明るい答えのひとつの例となれたらと考えています

 

買い取った牧場はいくつものパートにわかれます。

 

↑【例1：道路向こうにある面積約５haの近代的な豚舎 (A modern piggery)】

この豚舎は、汚水処理施設がすでに老朽化し、北風が吹くと南側の私たちのところまで耐えられないほどの悪臭が流れてきます。

今後この豚舎については、牧草の保管や羊やヤギ、牛の搾乳舎に転換し、乳製品の製造といった私たちのビジネスとしての側面を支えてもらう施設へ再生したいと思います。

地目上は「畑」となっているこの土地の大部分には、放棄され荒廃し錆びついた牧場の建物が散在しています。ここは、以前は収益も高く、よく運営されていたようです。

母屋の近くには池のある庭があり、モネの「日本橋」を思わせるような大変美しい赤い橋が架かっています(15.Monets Garden)。

 

しかし現在のこの区画は、道路から見ると目をそらしたくなります。荒廃した建物は害虫の巣となり、豚舎は悪臭を放っています。

 

屋根の材料、プラスチック、ゴミは、この地域に頻繁に発生する強風で、周辺に吹き飛んでいます。

また詳しくは水質や土壌検査で確認しますが、牧場の土壌は、長い時間をかけて汚染が蓄積していると考えられるので、短期間で元の健康な土作りができるかどうかは甚だ疑問です。

「環境的に不健全であるだけでなく、通行する車両や近隣にとっても危険」。例2の区画を購入する必要はありませんでしたが、クリーンアップして安全な状態にするために購入しました。これは私たちにとって経済的利益はありませんが、社会的利益としてやりたいことなのです。

「Just want to demolish it and clean it up because it’s not beautiful.(取り壊して片付けたいんだ、美しくないから。)」

このプロジェクトが始まったときのオーナーのサイモンの言葉にその気持ちが詰まっています。

 

この谷を、私たちは美しくしたい。

 

まずは私たちは、敷地内にある倒壊した建物を撤去し、牧場の再建作業に取り掛かります。

今回のクラウドファンディングで応援頂きたいのは、この「解体・撤去」というファームビレッジづくりへのはじまりの一歩の部分です。

 

解体・撤去後、住宅や、池、庭をリフォーム・手入れし、以前の美しい姿を取り戻します。

住宅だった建物はファームステイやワークショップなどに来られた方のゲストハウスとして利用可能なようにリフォームし、他の建物は冬期や悪天候の際の動物たちや牧草のシェルターとして使用する計画です！

 

 

このプロジェクトの長期的な全体構想もお伝えすると、目指しているのはエピキュリアン哲学に基づいた「Low-key Farm Village」(ローキーファームビレッジ)。

 

Low-keyとは「控えめな・目立たない・秘密にしておく」。

Farm Villageとは農業に関連した多様なレクリエーションオプションを提供する牧場のこと。

そしてエピキュリアスとは、人生を幸福にする術を哲学とし、良い料理や工芸品、人との交わりをつくることに幸福を見出し、「Pleasure：喜び」を最高で唯一の善とした考えです。

 

現在考えているレクリエーションは次のようなFARMでの体験です。

　◎ファームツアー(アニマルウェルフェア、土地の再生といった視点など)

　◎羊の毛刈り、羊毛の紡ぎ、編み物

　◎豚のソーセージ、ハム、サラミの作り方

　◎ヤギや羊の乳からつくるチーズ作り

　◎ミツバチの飼育と蜂蜜の抽出

　◎ガーデニング、プリザープドフラーワーつくり

 

 

そのほかにも、カフェやキャンドル作り、ヨガリトリート、ファームウェディング、など...夢は広がります。コンセプトは「私たちが場をつくれば、楽しんでくれる人々がやってきてくれる」！

 

私たちは、皆様のサポートや資金を支えにこの牧場を再生しようと思います。

 

再生には時間がかかるでしょう。そこで私たちと同じ志を持った人達に応援して頂き、この牧場の再生に共に取り組むことができればと考えています。

 

 

今回のクラウドファンディングには２つの目的があります。

 

重要な1つの目的は、「倒壊した建物の撤去・再生による地域環境の回復」、

 

もう1つの目的は、「私たちの取り組みが一過性ではなく持続してファームビレッジづくりに伴走して頂ける方々と出会う」ため。

 

そのために私たちのFARMや生産物のPRも兼ねています。応援してくださった方へのリターンでは、地域環境への貢献につながっているという実感、また「その食べ物がいったいどこからきたのか？」ということを考えるきっかけをお届けしたいと思っています。

 

私たちも日々の動物たちとの暮らしに精一杯で「伝える方法」はまだまだ模索中なのですが、私たちと動物たちとの暮らしのことや、どんな考えをもってFARMを運営しているのか、等身大の風景を皆様へお伝えしていけたらと思っています。

 

例えば、一般的な経済動物としての豚は6ヶ月で出荷させるところを、私たちの豚は4シーズン(四季)をFARMで必ず過ごしています。産業として考えれば、生産性も悪く、ベストな判断ではないかもしれない。しかし、4シーズンを生きたことの豚の誇りのようなものを私たちは大切にしている。『その食べ物がいったいどこからきたのか？』。

うちの豚のお肉は、理想的な年齢であったり大きさではないけれど、

「たしかに4シーズン生きた豚だった」

そのことに思いを馳せられるようなFARMであり続けたいと考えています。

 

放棄地と廃墟は、健康や福祉サービスのリスクの増加、不動産価格の下落、住民のそうしたネガティブ感情が、地域社会の衰退や投資を控える動きと関連しています。

 

海外では空き家や放棄物件などの維持・管理・取り壊しの費用は地方自治体が負担しており、物件のドアや窓はベニヤ板で封印され、芝刈りが行われ、ゴミも片づけられます。しかし日本では、放棄され荒廃した不動産があちこちに見られます。

 

 

一般的に、放棄された不動産を修復すれば、再開発や経済再活性化になるといわれるでしょう。私たちが計画しているこのファームビレッジづくりも、過疎化を様々な方法で食い止め、残された方々の生活の質の向上にも繋がるはずです。

 

 

今回頂いた支援金は全額、解体・撤去へ使用いたします。

 

◎1stゴール70万円は「解体・撤去のために使用する重機のリース代」へ。

 

◎ 2ndゴール・3rdゴールと目指せるならば「実際の解体・撤去にかかる費用」に。

 - 産業廃棄物の処理費(瓦礫・廃プラスチックなど)：約230万円

 - 重機オペレータ１名・作業員２名とした日当合計：月約110万円

 - 燃料・水道光熱費などその他雑費(経費全体の20％として)：約81万円

解体費用総額の見積もりは約４２２万円。

 

自己資金でスタートし、解体専門業者に依頼せず可能な限り自分たちで直接有資格者をオファーしたり作業したり、DIYで修繕やリフォームを行っていきたいと思っているのですが、

建て直しや修繕・リフォームなど、まだまだファームビレッジ目指してやるべきことがたくさん！！  

 

目標大きく、2ndゴールを150万円、3rdゴールを300万円。

422万円のうち、300万円を支援頂けたら、と思い今回チャレンジさせて頂きました。

 

この地方の荒廃した牧場を再生するという試みは単なる一つのプロジェクトにすぎませんが、しかしここから地方再生の潮流を創生し、やがては大きな流れになるものと信じております。

( -この写真をアップしたときに元気だったYashaは、プロジェクト準備期間中の先日亡くなりました。今冬は仕事から引退してゆっくりとシニアライフを楽しむ予定だったのですが。ここで生まれここで終える命があります。)

 

このプロジェクトに参加し支援をしてくださる方としてイメージしているのは、

地域環境に関心のある方、都市部在住で地域の農業やコミュニティを応援したい方、新鮮な地元の食材を好まれる方、もちろん良質な黒豚の製品を割引価格でお求めになりたい方も歓迎です！

支援の形はそれぞれです。

 

また、解体・撤去の際、リサイクル可能な木材や梁など仕分けして再利用したいと思っており、そういった作業のお手伝いのサポートも大歓迎です。

（例：梁や再利用可能な木材は資材として活用、その他破砕可能な木材はウッドチップとして果樹園などのマルチとして再利用、基礎のコンクリートは損傷具合によってはそのまま残して活用または破砕して通路補修の基礎として再利用するなど。)

 

 

「荒廃した牧場を再生させ、ファームビレッジをつくる」べく、そしてその先に、人生の意味を改めて考えられるような景色、美味しい料理や工芸品、人や動物たちとの交わりを提供する素晴らしい場をこの谷につくりたい。

Revitalizing a run-down farm: give your support to the creation of a farm village in a beautiful valley, where animals and people can come together!

 

Our long-term goal is. To create a 'Low-key Farm village'. We aim to create a farm village that offers beautiful scenery, fine food and crafts, and companionship with people and animals that will make you rediscover the meaning of LIFE! 

 

■Introduction. 

Hello! We run a farm named CURLY FLATS FARM in a small valley surrounded by the mountains of Hokkaido. Our FARM, which is still in its process of development, is run by a team of the restless (and dynamic in pursuit of his own ideals) owner, who was born in Tasmania, Australia and grew up in NZ, with Japanese staff and two dogs, and struggling daily with lots of mistakes, but managing the farm in a lively way. Our farm is located in a valley with a beautiful river running through it, on the border between Hidaka cho and Niikappu cho in southern Hokkaido. Various livestock (black pigs, sheep, goats, etc.) are pastured naturally in this farm.The livestock, often called 'economic animals', live in close relation to humans throughout the  four seasons in Hokkaido. This is a place where  people can learn and think about the question "Where did the food we eat come from?" and   we believe that one of our responsibilities is to  provide a place where people can learn and think about this question.  Through the experiences at CURLY FLATS  FARM we are also researching how small farms can make a profit and how to stop the various problems facing the Japanese countryside such as depopulation, aging population, abandoned farms, and uncertainty about the future, while running the farm. The farm, which was established five years ago after purchasing a former horse ranch, is still in the process of growth and is slowly undergoing renovation, together with the livestock brought in three years ago, as it faces a challenging journey.

 

■ Background of the Project.

The road from the Pacific coast to our farm winds its way through a variety of pastures and rice paddies, providing beautiful scenery. There was once a time when this small town was a busy, prosperous place with a variety of shops and schools. All that remains today is a petrol station, a post office, a couple of nice small houses and farms, and a few abandoned and decaying houses and farms.Our farm was originally an old farm that lasted four generations, but went out of business and was then taken over and bought by us through JA. It is difficult for foreigners to own farms in Japan, but maybe JA realized that new ideas and new blood were needed to overcome the current situation, and perhaps they gave us the chance to do so.The farm to the north of us was also a wonderful pig farm that lasted three generations, but two years ago the owner fell ill and went out of business. The family has now left the farm and the owner occasionally visits the building for security purposes. After the farm was auctioned, we bought it and the story continues with this project.It is clear that this kind of situation of having to close down or abandon a business is not only in this region, but also all over Japan. We are trying to find out how small local farms and ranches can make a profit and how to stop the various problems they are facing (depopulation, ageing population, abandoned farms, uncertainty about the future). We hope to be an example of a bright answer to these problems.

 

■ Details of the project and what we want to achieve.

The farm we bought is divided into several parts.

 

Example 1: A modern piggery with an area of approximately 5 ha across the road: This piggery already has a dilapidated sewage treatment plant, and when the north wind blows, an extremely unbearable smell flows down to us on the south side of the road. In the future, this piggery will be converted into hay barns and breeding and milking parlour for sheep goats or cows. We would like to convert this piggery into a facility to support the commercial side of our business, such as the production of dairy products.

 

Example 2: A plot of the main body of the dairy farm of 5 ha in total: A large part of this land, which is nominally a 'field', is littered with abandoned, disused and rusting farm buildings. The place used to be profitable and well operated. Near the main house is a garden with a pond and a very beautiful red bridge, which reminds us of Monet's 'Nihonbashi' (Bridge of Japan). However, today this block is an eyesore and passers by avert their eyes. The rundown buildings are a nest for pests and the piggery stinks.                                                        

Water and soil tests will confirm this, but it is highly doubtful that the soil on the farm can be restored to its original healthy state in a short period of time, as contamination is thought to have accumulated over a long period of time. The purchase and revitalization of the block is primarily motivated by emotional and moral considerations, rather than reasons such as business interests. 'I just want to demolish it and clean it up because it's ugly' This sentiment is expressed in the words of the owner, Simon, when the project began: 'We want to make this valley beautiful.

 

First, we will remove the damaged buildings on the site and begin work on re-establishing the farm. The houses, ponds and gardens will be renovated and cared for, restoring them to their former beauty. The main house will be renovated so that it can be used as a guesthouse for farm-stay visitors and work-shop visitors etc., while the other buildings will be used as shelter for livestock and grass during the winter and bad weather!

To give you the long-term vision of the project as well, the aim is to create a 'Low-key Farm Village' based on Epicurean philosophy.

Low-key means to keep low-profile, inconspicuous and secret. Farm Village means a farm that offers a variety of agriculture-related recreational options. And Epicurean is the philosophy of the art of making life happy, finding happiness in making fine food, crafts and creating fellowship with others, and the idea that 'Pleasure' is the highest and only good. The recreational experiences currently being considered at the farm are. Farm tours (from the perspective of animal welfare and regeneration of the soil). Shearing sheep, wool spinning and knitting Making pig sausages, ham and salami. Cheese making from goat and sheep's milk. Bee keeping and honey extraction Gardening, making preserved flowers. Other activities include cafés, candle making, yoga retreats, farm weddings, ... The dreams go on and on. The concept is: "If we create the space, people will come and enjoy being here!"

 

■ Purpose of launching the project.

We are going to regenerate this farm with your support and funding. It will take time to complete the process.We would like to invite people who share our vision to join us and work together to revitalize the farm. We have set aside 3.5 million yen to fund our current activities, and we will start the work needed starting right away in the autumn. This crowdfunding has two objectives.One important objective is to " restore the local environment by removing and rehabilitating the collapsed buildings" and the other objective is to "meet people who can work with us to make sure that our efforts are not transitory, but sustainable and that we build a Farm Village". For this purpose, we also promote our FARM and its products.In the returns for those who support us, we want to give you the opportunity to think about where your food comes from (and the feeling that you are contributing to the local environment).We are still busy with our daily lives with the animals and are still looking for ways "to share our stories", but we would like to tell you about our lives with the animals, what we think about the way we run the farm, and about our real life stories.For example, our pigs spend a minimum of four to six seasons at the farm, whereas commercial pigs are generally shipped after six months as economic animals. Considering it as an industry, this may not be the best decision, as it is not profitable. However, we value the pigs' sense of pride in having lived through all four seasons. 'Where on earth did that food come from?' . Our pork meat may not fit the supermarket deal age or size, but it was indeed from a pig that lived happily for four seasons. We want to continue to be a farm where people can remember that.

 

■ What is the social significance of this project? 

Abandoned and run down land is a by-product of significant economic activity in the community. Increased risks to health and social services, falling property prices and these negative feelings of residents are associated with community decline and a reluctance to invest.In many foreign countries, local authorities pay for the upkeep, management and demolition of vacant and abandoned properties, and these properties' doors and windows are sealed with plywood, lawns are mowed and rubbish is cleared away. In Japan, however, abandoned and dilapidated properties can be found all over the place.It is generally said that to restore abandoned properties would lead to redevelopment and economic revitalization. This project we are planning will also help to halt depopulation in various ways and improve the quality of life of the people left behind.

 

All funds received will be used for demolition and removal.

◎700,000 yen of the 1st goal will be used for "leasing heavy equipment for demolition and removal.

◎ If you can aim for the 2nd and 3rd goals, it will go to "the cost of actual demolition/removal. - Cost for disposal of industrial waste such as rubble and waste plastic: approx. 2.3 million yen - Total per diem assuming 1 main heavy equipment operator and 2 workers: approx. 1.1 million yen per month - Other miscellaneous expenses such as fuel, utilities, etc. (assuming 20% of total expenses): approx. 810,000 yenEstimated total demolition costs: 4,220,000 yen.

 

We would like to start with our own funds, offer and work directly with a qualified demolition contractor whenever possible, and do DIY repairs and renovations ourselves, instead of hiring a demolition specialist.After demolition/removal, there's still a lot of rebuilding, repairing and remodeling we need to do to get to Farm Village!!!Our goal is big, 1.5 million yen for the 2nd goal and 3 million yen for the 3rd goal. We are taking on this challenge in the hope of receiving 3 million yen of the 4.22 million yen in support.

 

This is just one project, but we believe that from here we can create a trend of rural revival that may eventually become a major trend.

 

■ Lastly. 

We imagine new participants and supporters of this project as people who are interested in the local environment, people living in urban areas who want to support local agriculture and communities, people who prefer fresh local produce, and of course people who want to buy quality Kurobuta products at a discount! There are many ways in which you can help.We would also like to sort and reuse recyclable lumber and beams during demolition and removal, and would welcome support in assisting with such work.(e.g., beams and reusable wood can be used as materials, other shreddable wood can be reused as wood chips as mulch for orchards, etc., concrete foundations can be left as they are or shredded and reused as foundations for repairing walkways, depending on the degree of damage, etc.)

 

We hope to " revitalize the run-down farm and create a farm village", and beyond that, we want to create a pleasing place in the valley that offers scenery, fine food and crafts, and companionship with people and animals that will make you rethink the meaning of life. ■Our neighbor Di maccio museum.

The museum has been revitalizing a closed primary school, and is undertaking a series of unique initiatives that are beyond the concept of an art museum. As a community-based museum, the Di Maccio Museum of Art has been a great inspiration for our Farm Village concept, and the director who acting for the community, Koichi Tanimoto, has been very encouraging in giving us advice on our project. Visitors who choose to return for farm and field tours will receive a special invitation to the museum! The museum's mysterious and diverse collection is presented as "Art that can't be found in Paris or Tokyo, but is found in the sun of Niikappu-cho", including the world's largest oil painting by French genius Gerard Di Maccio, which can be experienced with a light and sound projection program. The museum places the highest value on 'symbiosis with nature' and has adopted an exhibition style that allows visitors to look at the nature outside while enjoying the artworks, or to view the artworks inside from the walkway set up outside. ■In order to fulfill the requirements of this crowdfunding project, the applicant must be a business that is capable of using farmland or pastureland for agricultural operations. Under the guidance and supervision of the government, we raise livestock and produce and sell livestock products in accordance with the livestock management standards.
