Our Goals

We are currently trying to support girls in Burkina Faso through local scholarships, school reconstruction, and public education. Many of the girls just dream of going back to school. Part of the money collected will go directly to the girls who are forced to quit because of their families’ financial situation while some parts will be allocated to rebuild a school to support girls. Another part will go to logistics, that is, the computers' room aiming at giving vocational training to the selected girls. Your support is urgently needed and remember that there is no small contribution.

For ¥20,000 (≒$200), one girl can go to school for a year, which could change her life.

Child Marriage

Child marriage is driven by gender inequality and the belief that women and girls are somehow inferior to men and boys. In Burkina Faso, child marriage is also driven by:

・Level of education: Girls with no education marry at a younger age than those who have completed secondary school or higher.

・Poverty: Girls living in Burkina Faso’s poorest households have a lower median age of first marriage than those in the richest households.

・Traditional customs: Litho involves girls being exchanged and married off between families. Sometimes such agreements take place as early as the birth of the girl. Pog-lenga is still practiced among some Mossi and Bissa ethnic groups and involves brides bringing nieces to wedding ceremonies as an additional girl to be married, either to the groom or a family member or friend.

・Violence against Girls: Some girls in Burkina Faso are threatened with violence or banishment if they do not accept a marriage. Some feel pressured to marry because of financial agreements made between families. The subsequent guilt and potential loss of money and social status coerce many girls into agreeing to marry.

About Lompo Miyemba

Hello. I am Lompo Miyemba and I am 29 years old. I was born and grew up in Burkina Faso. At the age of 22, I lost my dad which was a very difficult moment in my life. I understood that self-resilience is the key to any success in this life. I then worked much harder at university in Burkina Faso where I graduated from linguistic and foreign languages studies. After my graduation, I thought of a way of paying back to my society what it has given to me during my tough times. For me, the best way to do it is to support women and girls. I then realized that the most vulnerable people in society are women and girls who face many problems including female circumcision, early or arranged marriages, low representation in the decision-making body. These reasons made me join an orphanage school of girls in 2014. In that school, my key responsibilities included:

- Teach English as a second language

- Provide advice to the orphans

- Organize theater and sketches to raise awareness in the local communities

- Organize and plan cultural activities

During my four years at the center, I developed some strong affection and love for my young students. However, I knew that I needed to grow individually in order to fully help the most vulnerable in my community. And I thought of coming to Japan for two reasons. First of all, Japanese education is one of the best in the world to my mind. Secondly, I came to Japan to grow my network with Japanese people since I see them as the most reliable among the developed countries. During my stay in Japan, I have been lucky to learn Japanese culture, business, and mostly the beautiful people. I then got a master's degree in international relations in Niigata. My busy schedule at school did not stop me from learning the basics of the Japanese language.

Why your help is needed?

“Educate a girl is to educate a nation”, meaning that girls’ empowerment has a direct impact on economic growth. Below, I will explain to you why girls’ education matters:

-Educate girls increases economic growth

-Girls’ education leads to better wages and jobs for women

-Girls’ education saves the lives of children and their mothers

-Girls’ education leads to smaller and more sustainable families

-Girls’ education results in healthier and better-educated children

-Girls’ education reduces rates of HIV/AIDS and malaria

-Girls education reduces the rate of child marriage

-Girls’ education empowers women and increases their political leadership

“Around the world, we see that better-educated women are often better able to make and implement decisions and choices, even where gender norms are restrictive. In all regions, women with more education also tend to marry later and have fewer children. Enhanced education is a key reason why children of better-educated women are less likely to be stunted: educated mothers have greater autonomy in making decisions and more power to act for their children’s benefit”. All in all, helping girls having access to education will help them escape from most of the problems they face in life.

Current situation in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is a landlocked state located in West Africa with six neighbors frequently in the conflict, including Mali on the north, D’Ivoire on the West, Benin, and Niger on the East, Ghana on the South, and Togo. Mali has been facing some insurgent groups on the north for years and lost 2/3 of its territory in 2013. Cote D’Ivoire has also experienced some ethnic and socio-political violent movements for years. As for Niger, Tuareg rebels since 2000 have been challenging the central government. Burkina Faso which used to the only peaceful country in west Africa has lost this status in April 2014. Since then, the state is challenged by armed groups which affect many sectors mainly education. Currently, a total of 848,329 people is internally displaced within the country. Over 2.1 million people are also expected to require urgent life-saving humanitarian support in food/nutrition. Like in any conflicting area girls and women are the most impacted. Thousands of schoolgirls are left without education due to the huge number of schools closed. This situation has exposed many girls to many problems including early or forced marriages, rapes, female genital mutilation to name only few. Urgent action needs to be taken and everyone’s contribution is highly appreciated.

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken adults”.

So, if you really think like me that women and girls are the most beautiful creatures on earth and should be treated fairly and taken care of, join me on my journey in giving what you have to make vulnerable girls' dreams come true.

True stories from school girls

“I was in class when the terrorists came. ... They fired a shot, and we all fled to save ourselves,” said Boureima S. (not his real name), a 14-year-old student at the time. “Afterwards, when we went back there, I saw they had burned the principal’s motorcycle... the [school’s] office... and the students’ notebooks.”

Attacks have caused extensive fear-induced withdrawals from schools, as well as long-term psychosocial consequences for students. “Many students don’t even want to look at a school again,” said one teacher. “The attack [on my school] really disturbed me... I don’t have the spirit to go back to school,” said a former student.

When girls don’t go to school, they are exposed to any kind of violence in society including child marriage. That is why as adults, we should make sure that girls have equal access to basic education.

I am 17 years old. On January 31th, my grandfather sent me to another village to attend his brothers’ funeral. Actually, this was a lie, instead he had organized a forced marriage for me. I was brought to the home of the man I had never met before and whom I was supposed to marry. What I feared most happened in his bed. I was crying day and night. I did not know him, did not want a husband, did not want him. What I wanted was to go back to school. On February 19th, I managed to escape. I went straight to the gendarmerie. The gendarmes referred me to the local social affairs office who have organized protection for me.

Francoise's case is not an isolated one in Burkina Faso. In fact, according to recent reports in Burkina Faso, 52% of girls are married before their 18th birthday and 10% are married before the age of 15. According to UNICEF, Burkina Faso has the fifth-highest rate of child marriage in the world. Other girls reported about school-related gender-based violence as a daily challenge. They are exposed to physical, psychological, and sexual violence and harassment by men on their way to school and at school by their male peers and even teachers.

Challenge

課題

Because of poverty, many African girls do not go to or finish primary school. According to UNICEF statistics, among youths 15-24 years old in Burkina Faso, the literacy rate for males is 70.5% and that of females is 52.1%. Early marriage also hinders girls from pursuing an education and gaining self-sufficiency/independence. A preference for boys' education remains dominant in many circles - with boys getting priority access to limited opportunities. This places girls at a huge disadvantage.

3. Making schools more girl-friendly

4. Improving school quality

5. Increasing community engagement

6. Sustaining girls’ education during emergencies

Long-Term Impact

This project is helping girls to break out of the vicious cycle that entraps unskilled and resource-poor girls. At-risk girls are maturing into well-educated, emancipated, gainfully employed, and self-sufficient women. These empowered women are the pillars of their families, communities, and the nation. When the mother of the home is educated, the health, well-being, and success of the entire family are propelled forward and transformed. Educated girls educate the entire nation we often say.

Our needs to start the project

Of the amount required to execute this project, the difference from the target amount of crowdfunding will be covered by own funds and donations other than crowdfunding. (As of November 21, 2020)
If crowdfunding succeeds but the difference cannot be secured as planned, we plan to reduce the scale. We are considering sending the students to other schools if the school reconstruction fee is insufficient, and reducing the number of students to accept if the scholarship is insufficient (one student can be accepted for every 20,000 yen).
