cho/Tainoura-Nagasaki route.

 

Due to depopulation, declining usage from the mainland, and soaring vessel fuel prices, the survival of the “Tainoura to Nagasaki Route,” one of the routes connecting the Goto Islands and Nagasaki Prefecture, is in a difficult situation.

 

We would like to continue to support the livelihood of the islanders.

We want new visitors to the island to discover the charms of our beloved Shinkamigotocho, and we want to support the route to encounter those charms.

For this reason, we have decided to take on the challenge of crowdfunding in order to protect this route at all costs.

This crowdfunding is an All or Nothing project, so we will not be able to receive your support unless we reach our goal.

We are Goto Sangyo Kisen Co., Ltd.

We are a passenger ship operator operating between the remote islands of Nagasaki Prefecture (Shinkamigotocho/Tainoura Port) and Nagasaki Port on the mainland.

 

In October 2018, we established a new company with the support of local people, mainly former employees who lost their way due to the sudden bankruptcy of the previous company.

It has now been six years since we resumed operation of the “Tainoura - Nagasaki route” after being designated by the town of Shinkamigotocho to manage the town-owned ship “Big Earth”.

 

After somehow overcoming the difficulties caused by the Covid-19 disaster, in April 2024, the company also received the designation to manage “Big Earth 2” and now operates two vessels.

We would like to continue to operate the route between the remote islands and Nagasaki.

As an important public transportation facility that operates the remote islands route, we have continued to operate our business with the desire to keep the route in operation.

 

The “Big Earth” and “Big Earth 2” are owned by the town of Shinkamigotocho, and we have been selected by the town of Shinkamigotocho as the designated manager of these two vessels on the “Tainoura to Nagasaki Route” and operate them both round trip.

 

However, due to the depopulation of the remote islands, a decline in the rate of use from the mainland, and the rising cost of vessel fuel, the service has been affected.

Many marine transport operators benefit from government subsidies under the Remote Islands Route Improvement Law, but the “Tainoura - Nagasaki” route, which we operate with approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, is not eligible for government subsidies because it does not meet the conditions.

Therefore, we have to overcome all deficits on our own.

 

In August 2024, our company proposed to the town of Shinkamigotocho that future operation of the “Big Earth” and “Big Earth 2” service routes would be difficult under the present conditions of the designated management contract, and after a discussion to review the conditions, it was decided to re-advertise for a designated manager.

 

We will do our best to apply for the designated management contract under the revised conditions and to be selected as the designated manager again.

For this reason, we have launched this project because we need to maintain the Tainoura - Nagasaki route at any cost.

Use of Funds
 
Your support will be used for vessel fuel costs to operate the Tainoura-Nagasaki route from September to October.

It takes 3,000 liters of diesel fuel per day to operate one vessel, which translates to a monthly fuel cost of approximately 20 million yen.

 

 

Future Schedule

 

Although the vision after October 2024 has not yet been determined, the schedule is expected to be as follows.

 

Mid-August: Notification to Shinkamigotocho that it is difficult to operate the service under the current designated management system.

 

Mid-September Article on “Difficulty in operating the Nagasaki-Tainoura service” appears in Nagasaki Shimbun (R6.9.13).

 

Mid-September Crowd-funding begins.
Dedicated to maintaining the route Shinkamigotocho begins public solicitation for a designated manager for the Tainoura-Nagasaki route.

 

Late October Crowdfunding ends
Start of Tainoura-Nagasaki route operation under new conditions of designated management system (to be determined)

We would like to continue to protect the route as the foot of the island.

 

If our company is selected again as the designated administrator by the town of Shinkamigotocho, we will always be more self-reliant than ever before and will work earnestly to operate the route.

 

When our former company went bankrupt, the remaining employees discussed what we would do.

At that time, what supported and motivated us were the voices of our customers who had been using our service, saying, “We can't afford to lose it,” and “We hope you will continue to use it.
With this in mind, we appointed a president from among the employees and continued as a new company.

This is our sixth year as a new company.

While this feeling grows stronger, we feel frustrated and disappointed that we continue to face difficult operating conditions.

In order to repay the islanders for the support they have given us, we will not give up this time and will continue to overcome this difficult situation.

 

In addition to fulfilling our role as a means of transportation for the islanders, we will continue our efforts to ensure stable operations by considering measures to attract more group tours and students on school trips from the mainland by taking advantage of the vessel's capacity (300 passengers) and operating speed (55 km/h). We would like to continue our efforts to achieve stable operations.
