Project “27” proposing 27 basics Vol. 03

Project 27

27 is an entire wardrobe, made up of 27 essential basics. Our goal is to deliver a “minimal closet.” We are passionate about the design, manufacturing process, and branding. Our goal is to launch 3-4 pieces a year through the READYFOR crowdfunding platform. Each piece will be inscribed with a distinct production number; because every piece of clothing should be unique – just like us.

A Note…

It is hard to believe that it is nearly a year since we launched 27. With tragic news across the globe, it cannot be said that this past year flew by. The pandemic is still very much at large, quietly mutating, and we find our lives still very much restricted. Here at 27, we strive to be flexible through fluctuating circumstance, and look to our project to bring about the joy of creation. We hope to build a new sustainable outlook to fashion and imagine our lives as it should be when we do emerge from the pandemic. We have learned to appreciate every moment, and to accept progress as it comes, slowly but surely.

Last summer, 27 proudly introduced Vol. 01: The Grey T-Shirt. Shortly after its release, we received interest from all over the world, with orders oversubscribing our production goal. We are proud to announce that Vol. 02: The Chino Trouser, concluded with an even bigger subscription. Only just a few days ago, we were able to deliver the product to all our customers, and we would like to thank you for your support.

Vol 02. Launched and Completed

Introducing Vol. 03 - THE BASQUE SHIRT

For Vol. 03 of our capsule collection, we are launching The Basque Shirt. As early as the 16th century, the shirt was ubiquitous in the fishing and sailing community in Basque, a region that straddles the border between France and Spain on the coast of the Bay of Biscay. Later the shirt was incorporated to wear as Naval uniform and has since made its way to our wardrobe. We have reexamined the shirt while applying our own 27 twist to the Basque shirt.

The Color
One of our main focuses was color. Known as International Klein Blue (IKB), the shade was created by French artist Yves Klein in 1957, who featured the color heavily in his body of work. “Blue has no dimensions, it is beyond dimensions,” Klein is known to have said, and further explains that blue suggests aspects of nature (the sky, the ocean), which are infinite and abstract. IKB is also our own project color, tied to our brand. It was our mission to achieve this bright shade through specialized dying techniques, without the use of synthetic fibers. It was therefore imperative we partnered with the right cotton dyeing professionals. Normally, in beaker dying, color matching trials are done within 2-3 attempts. We had gone through eight trials just to get it right. In order to achieve the IBK color, we concluded it was best to dye the cotton thread, before it was woven into raw material.

The Material

Our next focus was the textile. We knew we wanted to emphasize the delicate shape yet durability of the Basque shirt. To attain these two opposing qualities, we decided to use a Japanese traditional flat-knit machine, Shima Seiki SFE 14GG, to obtain the right tension in our fabric. Even in Japan, the usage of this series is rare. We went to a factory in the Shikoku region, that has been making school uniform sweaters for years, to manufacture our desired weight in gauge. We have used Extra Long Staple Cotton from India, which we have dyed carefully, and used the compact spinning process which reduces long protruding hairs from the yarn. The dense flat-knit weave provides both elegance, and structure which will remain over years of wear.

The Manufacturing

Most Basque shirts are manufactured using the “cut and sew” method, in which the textile is first made, cut according to pattern, then sewn. For our own Basque shirt design, each part will be woven to pattern, then sewn together. However, we paid great attention to the sewing in order not to lose the simplicity and casualness of the “cut and sew” method. Instead of a straight edge on the neck-line, our shirt curves gently to hug the outline of the body. Because the silhouette of the shirt is simple, we have used techniques to elevate each element, from the dimensionality of the flat weave to the subtle details that make this piece timeless.

In addition, we paid attention to how the fabric will feel on the skin, and its ‘bounciness’ when layered on top of other shirts. We believe we have designed a shirt with a high-quality fit and finish, with a look that is both simple and modern.

The Concept Book

We will be issuing a concept book with every launch - a total of 27 stories in which we “read” our clothes. The book will be written by Satoshi Tsuruta, book design by graphic designer Koji Miyazoe, and edited by Yosuke Fujiki. Together they hope to bring about an imaginative interpretation of the concept behind 27: the intangible self, expressed through tangible clothes.

Vol. 02 Concept Book

The book is exclusive to our 27 subscribers. Every book’s look and feel will be heavily influenced by the launched piece; the series will pass through 27 different worlds and perspectives.

Our first volume featured photographs of the internationally renowned photographer Daido Moriyama. In our second volume, we collaborated with artist MIC*ITAYA and explored the theme of “Love and Peace” for our chino trouser launch.

For our third volume, we have graciously been given the opportunity to use the photographs of renowned fashion photographer, Sarah Moon. These pictures have been selected from the personal collection of Naoko Ohta. As a condition of usage, we have agreed to donate a percentage of our profits to Plan International, a global development and humanitarian organisation which works to advance children’s rights and equality for girls. As a project that is working towards the betterment of our future, we have accepted full heartedly.

*As a sign of our appreciation, we would like to print your name on the concept book.
*If you
do not want your name to appear, please reflect your option on the order page.

*The concept book is complementary to our customers with every 27 purchase.
*Concept books are NOT FOR SALE.
