About Project “27” and Meet the Team

About 27:
The New Basics

I am the founder of COLONY CLOTHING, a select shop and brand in Singapore. I have loved fashion ever since I was a teenager and have always been curious about the history and stories of clothing from around the world. After joining BEAMS in Japan 22 years ago, I was fortunate to be able to explore many different styles through various people.

However, as fashion trend cycles accelerated with the growing economy, I started to feel uneasy. In 2005, I had a strong notion of wanting to create “the new basics.” I reached out to Yosuke Fujiki, a person outside the fashion industry - a curator in the art world, but more importantly, a friend. I shared my passion and thoughts on wanting to create high-quality, and long-lasting clothes that promotes sustainability. Years later, we came up with the project, resulting in this crowd funding.

When I love a piece, I want to be able to wear it for years. I want to create such pieces of clothing that can be used for a long time, such that it will allow for sustainability in the manufacturing and distribution process. It is our goal to create clothes that represent contemporary fashion in a very comprehensive way. Project 27 was created out of this long-standing passion.

“What does it mean to design clothes? Through 27, I want to create a new conceptual brand, and engage sophisticated consumers.”

-Kozo Kawamura

Rediscover Fashion

Our ethos in creating new basics:
With high-quality fabrics loved around the world

With simple designs shaped throughout history

With colors to be worn by anyone, regardless of race, gender, or generation.

We at 27 have access to first-rate craftsmanship. We work with Japanese manufacturers that are world renowned for their attention to detail. I have worked in the fashion industry that spans anywhere from English tailor-made apparel to highly churned out mass production. I believe I can deliver the in between. I also believe that simple design, quality material, and high standards to sewing methods, reflects highly on those of discerning taste.

Perhaps you have spent your youth thrifting - chasing the smell of vintage clothes. Or maybe you have a keen eye for couture and high fashion. Or maybe you glare up at the sky in a back alley. Or wear the same clothes every day. Maybe you just don’t care about fashion. I believe 27 is for all. The fashion cycle is moving too fast – to the degree that we can’t keep up. We have forgotten the original power of clothing and what it reflects of ourselves.
Project 27 believes in reviving a fashion that is timeless, for all.

Be The Way You Are

At 27 we believe fashion is not just something you wear. It allows you to meet people, not to be hidden away - it is an expression of who you are. 27 aims to provide clothing that is simple, of high quality, and wearable for many years. We believe that our project retains the identity of the person by providing high quality fashion staples that is not influenced by trends. We believe our pieces can be worn and broken in with love – even after 10 years.

“When you thought of 10 years into the future 10 years ago – that’s today. And when you look back 10 years, in 10 years’ time, that is also today. On such today, I hope that our concept is meaningful, not just for fashion but for who we are.”
-Yosuke Fujiki

Freedom in Fashion

Why do we ask for crowd funding? I have asked myself this question many times.
What it comes down to is - we are not looking for an investment to establish a new apparel line. We are looking for a cooperation – to create with you, for you, by you.

Our clothes will not be on display in a store. It will not be kept in a stockroom. We pride ourselves in delivering good quality clothes to those who really want them, on an as-needed basis. This represents a departure from the conventional fashion industry norm: with wasted stocks and sales promotion. We are challenging a dated perception on the value of clothes.

Our project goal is to create a new outlook on fashion by creating a borderless style. To move towards this future norm, we decided to collaborate with our customers using <READYFOR> – a platform that can be easily accessed and promotes an equal footing for all. 27 is not about fashion; it’s an idea that connects like minds together. The fashion industry needs changing, and we hope to build a new outlook that is free and robust. It is our desire to create fashion - with those we met in the past, for those we will meet in the future.

We deeply appreciate and thank you for your support,

Kozo Kawamura
