“Marine mammals” are mammals that live in the ocean, including dolphins, whales, seals, sea lions, dugongs, manatees, polar bears, and sea otters. You may be familiar with some of these animals.

 

The environment surrounding them is undergoing rapid and significant changes. Climate change-induced sea temperature rises and sea ice reduction show no signs of ceasing, while sudden phenomena such as large-scale red tide outbreaks and avian influenza, as well as potential development driven by political or resource-related reasons, continue to expose them to various threats.

 

Despite the critical importance of continuously monitoring these marine mammals to detect changes early, assess the situation, and take appropriate action, funding for monitoring surveys is becoming increasingly difficult due to trends in reduced national research budgets, a weakening yen, and rising energy costs.

 

We must not give up on the possibility of protecting their future when they face even greater crises in the future. We must not look away from this situation now. And we must plan some strategy.

 

The vision of the Kyoto University WRC Ocean Mammal Team is to create a future where marine mammals and humans coexist. We have decided to once again launch a crowdfunding campaign to secure funding for monitoring marine mammals in the ocean around Hokkaido and Greenland, and to raise awareness of their current situation.
