Introduction

We are Kouwakai, a social welfare corporation rooted in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. For nearly 24 years, we have been dedicated to supporting the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and children to continue living in their communities as much as possible. Centered in Wajima and Hakui cities, we operate welfare facilities offering employment support for people with disabilities, services for the elderly, and after-school care, among others. Our mission is to foster a supportive community where residents feel it's good to live and to enhance local welfare, making vibrant and fulfilling lives possible for all, regardless of age or ability.

The Reason Behind Our Project

On January 1, 2024, we were struck by a major earthquake. Not only were our service users affected, but our staff and facilities suffered extensive damage as well. With buildings completely destroyed by fire and others at risk of collapse, the situation has rendered a safe and stable life impossible. Our facilities serve many elderly and disabled individuals who require support for their daily lives, and this disaster has forced them into highly unstable living conditions.

In collaboration with partners outside the prefecture (Non-profit organization Grundtvig, Orange Medical&Social Services group, and DisasterVolunteer Nurse Group CANNAS), we are focusing on welfare shelter operations. However, given the physical and psychological strains on our elderly and disabled service users, there's an urgent need for more accessible welfare shelter operations and preparation for secondary evacuations.

Our Project

Our project aims to maintain welfare and care activities and to support the repair of damaged buildings, vehicles, and equipment. It also includes providing for our tirelessly working staff and aiding in evacuation and relocation efforts. Every contribution will help ensure that as many people as possible can live safely and comfortably.

A Message from Our Director

In the aftermath of an unprecedented earthquake, we, along with the elderly, disabled, healthcare workers, and community members of Wajima, have strived to support continued living in familiar surroundings. Yet, the disaster has severely limited evacuation options, contributing to physical and mental exhaustion and even disaster-related fatalities. Our goal is to stand by our community and support them in living in their cherished hometowns once again. Reconstruction will take time, but the lives of those affected cannot be put on hold.
