We,  Japan Automobile Federation (JAF), an organization for all automobile drivers, are running a project called "Omoiyalty Drive". 【”Omoiyalty” is a word that we created from a the Japanese word “Omoiyari”, meaning compassion】“Omoiyalty Drive” is based on the idea that when all drivers drive with compassion, our society becomes even better.

 

 

With the aim of creating a safe environment on the road for people with physical disabilities, we launched this crowdfunding campaign in partnership with the Japan Service Dog Association for the training of service dogs.

 

Many service dog partners drive cars, thus under the principle of "contributing to the development of a healthy automobile society,” JAF has started to support those who are in need of service dogs.

 

Your support will be donated to Japan Service Dog Association and will be used for various activities related to service dog training. We are grateful for your kind support.

 

 

 

 

People with physical disabilities face a variety of challenges in everyday transportation. The following are some examples.

 

For people with physical disabilities, a car is a very important means of transportation in expanding their range of daily and social activities. When getting in and out of a car, the driver needs to open the front door fully to load and unload a wheelchair,thus requiring a handicapped parking space. However, ever so often, people with disabilities end up not being able to go shopping because the handicapped parking space is occupied by those who the parking space is not allotted to.

 

 

While moving with a wheelchair, there are risks such as getting stuck from an obstacle on the sidewalk and even being forced to use the driver’s lane.

 

People with physical disabilities tend to need more time to walk over across the street. However, there are many cases in which drivers fail to stop at crosswalks, to dangerous situations.

 

 

Under these circumstances, service dogs play a very important role.

 

Many service dog partners say that having a service dog beside them not only helps them with picking up dropped objects, walking, and pulling a wheelchair, but also increases the compassion of the people around them, reducing their psychological burdens of going out.

 

However, there are currently only 57 service dogs active in Japan! It is said that there are 15,000 people in Japan who need service dogs, but there is an overwhelming shortage of them. (There are some prefectures that do not even have one active service dog). (Reference: Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare website)

 

 

 

 

Through this project, we would like to make more people become aware of the perspectives of service dog partners and people with physical disabilities, and achieve JAF’s principle of "Every car passing by is full of compassion" to create a more comfortable society for all. We also hope to see a brighter future ahead of us, where service dog training would progress, and many more service dog partners can enjoy driving and achieve success in society.

 

Our partner, Japan Service Dog Association, has been carrying out many activities at events and lectures to spread awareness and understanding about service dogs in society and to further improve their training.

 

However, due to the impact of the corona virus pandemic, the activities have been restricted and they have not been able to conduct street fundraisers, resulting in a shortage of about 15 million yen in income compared to previous years.

 

JAF strongly believes that "now more than ever is the time we support the activities of Japan Service Dog Association.”

 

 

 

This project will be managed and led by JAF. After the crowdfunding is completed, we will report the activities of the Japan Service Dog Association through our new information feed.

 

 

①Expenses related to breeding, mating, and delivery of breeding dogs
②Costs associated with raising puppies, socializing them, and educating puppy-home volunteers
③Expenses for training dogs
④Costs associated with educational activities to promote understanding of service dogs
⑤Expenses related to joint training with service dog applicants

 

 

Your support will help promote service dog training and matching, expand the scope of social participation for people with disabilities, and provide an opportunity to learn about the perspectives of service dog partners. We would highly appreciate your kind support.
