アメリカ発！自閉症療育の先生を招待し自宅で指導を受けたい

サンライズプログラムの創始者は、

Barry & Samahria Kaufman (バリー＆サマリア・コウフマン）ご夫妻です。

 

 

1973年にご夫妻に生まれた男の子、Raun (ローン）さんが重度の自閉症と診断され、その子のためにご夫妻がなんと自分たちでつくったプログラムがサンライズプログラムの発祥です。

 

ローンさんは１歳すぎた頃から自閉症らしき症状を示し始め、気がついたご夫妻は専門家に診てもらい、最終的に重度の自閉症でIQは３０以下と診断されました。「一生治らない」「希望がない」そして「将来は施設でしか暮らせないから、この子は諦めて他の2人の子どもに専念したほうがいい」とまで言われたそうです。ご夫妻はあきらめず全米各地とヨーロッパをまわり専門家に会いに行ったものの結局同じことを言われ、ローンさんが自閉症となったことは「どうしようもない悲劇」「災難」という視点でしか見られなかったそうです。

 

 

ご夫妻は自閉症に関するありとあらゆる書籍を読み、あらゆる療育方法について調べ、自閉症の子どものための施設も見学に行きました。するとそこで見たものは、子ども達がまるで虐待されているような姿。繰り返し行動をしないようテーブルや椅子に手足を縛りつけられていたり、ご褒美と罰の考え方に基づいた方法で罰として子どもが小さな箱のようなクローゼットに閉じ込められていたり、電気ショックを流すような事が行なわれていた。一般的に子どもにしたら虐待として犯罪となることが、なぜか自閉症の子どもには医療の名の下でそのような行為が良い事とされてたことに、ショックを受けたそうです。

 

どんなに探しても、ご夫妻が求めるような子どもを尊重し、かつ効果的なプログラムは見つからず、知れば知るほど、とても施設にローンさんを任せる事はできないと強く思い始めたそうです。

 

子どもは、人間の尊厳を持つ小さな人。

 

愛と尊重に基づき、自分たちがありのままのローンさんを受け入れ、無条件に愛していることを伝え絆をつくりたい、という気持ちで、自宅でプログラムを開始。ご夫妻は子どもにとって困難な世界に無理やり連れてこようとするのではなく、こちらが子どもの世界との間に橋をかけ、まずは相手の世界に参加させてもらいたいと、ローンさんの繰り返し行動を一緒に行い、ローンさんの世界に参加させてもらい理解しようと努めました。これがサンライズプログラム独特のJoining(参加する）というメソッドのはじまりです。

 

 

3年半、自宅でプログラムを行ううちに、ローンさんは自閉症の症状がすべて完全に消失し、社交的で、愛情深い、おしゃべりな子に成長。IQ３０以下と言われていたのに天才に近いIQを持つように。小学校から通い始め、高校はトップの成績で卒業し、一流大学で生命倫理を勉強し卒業しています。

 

父親のバリーさんはその後、ローンさんの回復までのストーリーを『Son-Rise: The Miracle Continues』という本に書き、ベストセラーに。それがテレビ映画になって放映されました。その後ご夫妻はアメリカのマサチューセッツ州にAutism Treatment Center of America を設立するに至っています。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

ローンさんは現在、ご両親が設立したセンターでグローバル教育ディレクターとして実際にサンライズプログラムを教え、また各地で講師として活躍しています。2013年には著書『Autism Breakthrough』も出版されました。

Amazing Founders of the Son-Rise Program®

 

Barry & Samahria Kaufman are the founders of the Son-Rise Program^®.

Their son Raun, who was born in 1973, was diagnosed with severe autism. They developed the program for him.

 

When Raun was just over one year old, the Kaufman’s noticed changes in his behavior. They took him to specialists, who diagnosed him with severe autism and an IQ below 30. They were told that it was a hopeless situation, that he would never recover, and that when he got a little older he would probably spend the rest of his life in an institution. Given that, the Kaufmans were told, it would be better if they focused on their other two children. They refused to give up, and travelled throughout the United States and Europe. The response was the same. Raun’s autism was viewed as a “disastrous tragedy.”

 

The Kaufmans studied the literature on autism and investigated various treatments – they visited institutions for children with autism. They saw children being abused. Children’s hands were tied to tables and chairs if they did not stop repetitive behaviors, and based on the methodology of reward and punishment they were locked in tiny closets or given electric shocks. They were shocked and wondered why it was deemed acceptable in the name of medical treatment to allow these methods for children with autism when they would be considered child abuse if applied to neurotypical children.

 

No matter how much they searched, they could not find an effective program that seemed to respect children enough, and the more they found out, the more their conviction grew that they would not place Raun in an institution.

 

Children are small people with human dignity.

They chose to accept Raun completely with love and respect, without judging his repetitious and unusual behaviors good or bad. They believed that Raun was doing his best in a world that did not make sense to him. They believed that all his bahaviors had meaning. 

 

Thus, rather than try and force him to come to their world, they decided to join him in his world to understandhim, and to show him clearly their acceptance and love. This was the beginning of “joining,” which is a key element of the Son-Rise Program, to develop a deep rapport with your child.

 

After three-and-a-half years of working with him, Raun not only lost all traces of his former condition, he developed into a sociable, loving, highly communicative child. His IQ was measured at near-genius level. He graduated with high honors in high school, and received a degree in biomedical ethics at an Ivy League university.

 

Barry Kaufman wrote a best-selling book, Son-Rise: The Miracle Continues, which was made into an NBC television movie entitled Son-Rise: The Miracle of Love. Raun’s parents established the Autism Treatment Center of America in Massachusetts, U.S.A. 

 

Raun is currently the Director of Global Education at the Center. He also travels lecturing about the Son-Rise Program.  In 2013, he wrote the book Autism Breakthrough.

 

The Kaufmans are amazing!

When I learned about all this, I was completely surprised. I cannot imagine what it must be like to create your own program like this.
