To overseas supporters|Buppou-Syoryu-ji Temple
Beito Mandala Conservation and Restoration Project, Japanese Cultural Heritage for the Future.
Sorry, support for overseas residents is available only under the "No Reward Plan".
(Plan H - Plan L)
Buppou-Syoryu-ji Temple is a Shingon(Ku-kai) Buddhist temple in Suwa City,
Nagano Prefecture, Japan, based on a hall built over 1,200 years ago, and has a history of producing monks from all over Japan as a place of study.
The temple's network of many temples has brought in valuable cultural assets and temple treasures, including more than 3,000 sutras, 3,000 old documents and about 200 hanging scrolls, a quality and quantity rarely seen in local temples.
But however, historic cultural properties are deteriorating by the minute.
The total cost of restoring the scrolls alone, which are in urgent need of restoration, was estimated at approximately 30 million yen. This time, we have decided to raise funds for the restoration of the Hokuto Mandala, which has deteriorated considerably and was painted more than 300 years ago by Hohashi Ryuei, a leading Buddhist priest who worked at Daigoji Temple in Kyoto, through crowdfunding.
We would like to ask for your kind support in our efforts to preserve the precious cultural heritage of the Suwa region for the future.
The name of the temple is Butsubo-Saorai-ji, a temple of the Shingon sect of
Buddhism, located in Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture. The temple was originally built in 806 by the barbarian general Sakanoueno Tamuramaro when he visited Suwa Daimyojin, and was later turned into a study center for the Shingon sect by Kobo Daishi Kukai, according to tradition.
From the time of its founding until the end of the Muromachi period (1333-1573), the temple was engaged in the Buddhist rituals of Suwa-taisha Shrine.
It is also said to be the best of the Shinshu Shitennoji temples as a study center for Shingon Buddhism, and produced outstanding monks for all over Japan, a role it continued to play until before World War II. During the Edo period, the temple was granted 50 koku as a temple of the Suwa Takashima clan or Suwa family.
Since ancient times, this temple has served as a branch of the Daigo-ji temple in Kyoto and as a temple for the teachings of the Sanboin-Matsuhashi school
(Matsuhashi sect), a sect of the Daigo-ji temple.
Artifacts related to the "Shunkai" who spread the Matsuhashi sect to the Kanto region remain here. In addition, valuable documents such as the letters of "Genyu", the founder of the Shichisan sect of the Shingon sect, who established Chishaku-in in Kyoto, and the Shingon sect law "Shingon Sect Codes" issued by Tokugawa Ieyasu, have been preserved to this day.
After the Meiji era, the temple belonged to the Shingon Sect Shichisan Sect and
held a very high status Temple. However, after World War II, it received an
invitation from the Koyasan Shingon Sect and is now a temple of the Koyasan
Shingon Sect.
Last year, we carried out the "Suwa Shinto-Buddhism Project," a project aimed
at bridging the future by joining hands between the Suwa faith in the gods from
the syncretic period of Shinto and Buddhism and the Suwa faith in the Buddha.
This temple played a central role in that project.
And our temple aims to be open to all visitors, offering attractions such as viewings of our beautiful gardens to enjoy the changing seasons. We also illuminate our natural monument, the large ginkgo tree, which has become a feature of the autumn season. We periodically hold concerts and strive to make the space of the temple enjoyable for many people.
The amount of temple treasures and cultural properties in our temple's
collection is large, and those that were waiting to be restored were
deteriorating, and those that needed to be restored in the near future were in
need of restoration. We asked the restoration office to estimate the cost of
restoring the hanging scrolls, which were our top priority, and found that the
total cost for even the first stage would be as much as 30 million yen.
Due to its history, our temple has lost its economic foundation such as temple
lands, clan support, and monk development. Despite our earnest efforts to
maintain the temple with our not-so-large congregation, we have determined
that the sum of 30 million yen is beyond our means.
However, unlike top-notch famous temples, we are a regional temple. We feel uncertain whether we can reach the point of fully restoring everything, and so we decided to gradually start from the restoration of the hanging scroll called "Hokuto Mandala," hoping to make progress little by little.
|Restoration of the Mandala of the North Star
The Big Dipper Mandala is a mandala in which the stars of the night sky, such as the Big Dipper, the North Star, the constellations, and the 28 mansions, take on the form of Buddha. It is an offering of prayers to the stars for the year and for the removal of bad luck and misfortune.
It is mentioned that it was once a "fixture of Kisyoin kyukaijyu-ji Temple.
It is known to be a masterpiece painted by a leading Buddhist priest named Hohashi
Ryuei. Hohashi Ryuei is known to have worked at Daigoji Temple in Kyoto.
The Hokuto Mandala is a valuable source for considering his activities in painting at
Daigoji Temple.
The record states that it was donated by "Daigo Marunobou" and the eye-opening ceremony was conducted by "Daisōjō Zenkai" in the 7th year of Hōei(1710).
After being brought to our temple, it was used for prayers by the lord of the Suwa Takashima clan. It is also a wonderful painting, depicting Western ideas such as the constellations (12 palaces). Compared to other mandalas in circulation today, our Hokuto Mandala is unique in its arrangement of Buddhist statues and Buddhist ritual implements, and we look forward to future research on this mandala.
More than 300 years have passed since 1710, and the damage, including peeling and breaking, is severe. Preservation and restoration will be carried out at "Taiseido", which specializes in the restoration of cultural properties, and a new box will be prepared for future preservation.

We would like to pass on to future generations the splendor of Japanese culture
and local culture by connecting the precious cultural assets brought from all over Japan and nurtured in Suwa to the future, and to make them one of the attractions of temples so that many people can view them and enjoy them.
We would like to create a place where people can easily come into contact with Buddhism and esoteric Buddhism.
-Buppou-Syoryu-ji Temple
Thirty-ninth chief priest Iwasaki Yuzen-
My name is Yuzen Iwasaki, and I have served as the 39th abbot of Buddhist Shaoryuji Temple since 2028. Our temple has a history of 1,200 years. It has repeatedly risen and fallen, and it is thanks to the support of many people that we are here today. We have worked hard to preserve and carry on our traditions, but we have also entered a period of hardship, and some of the things we have done cannot be carried forward into the future unless they are corrected now.
Although we have received cooperation from our parishioners in the past, we have come to an age in which we cannot sustain the temple solely on the basis of the hearts of our parishioners. We believe that a temple is only as strong as its members, and we would like to challenge a new and modern way of donation, rather than imposing our own convenience on you, and ask for your cooperation in order to pass on our precious cultural properties to the future together with your hearts and minds.
I am also fortunate to have been entrusted with the responsibility of carrying on this era, and I will do my utmost to make the best of it, and I ask for your cooperation. I will make every effort with my life and soul to make the temple a place where people can feel at home, to enjoy the temple's charms, to bring blessings to as many people as possible, and to be with you all. We sincerely ask for your cooperation.
