Project “27” proposing 27 basics Vol. 06

Project 27

27 is an entire wardrobe, made up of 27 essential basics. Our goal is to deliver a “minimal closet.” We are passionate about the design, manufacturing process, and branding. Our goal is to launch 3-4 pieces a year through the READYFOR crowdfunding platform. Each piece will be inscribed with a distinct production number; because every piece of clothing should be unique – just like you.

When 27 announced Vol. 01: The Grey T-Shirt on the READYFOR platform, we received resounding interest from all over the world. The following four volumes - The Chino Trouser, The Basque Shirt, The White Shirt, and The Towel Hoodie, have similarly concluded.

Last January we delivered our Vol.05 orders tol our customers. Thank you for all of the wonderful comments on the hoodie’s softness and unique storytelling of the concept book. 27 is now entering its third year. Coming out of the pandemic, our world now faces economic downturns and geopolitical tensions. Amidst uncertainty we are happy to be producing long-lasting basic wear that brings joy to our customers.

Vol. 06: The Black Jeans

Introducing Vol. 06: The Black Jeans. Originally designed for workmen, blue jeans were born out of west-coast America in the mid to late 1800’s. It was only after the war when American influence was at its peak- both politically and culturally, that jeans became a fashion item. Trend setters around the world were quick to notice advertisements and Hollywood movies featuring actors wearing jeans. Today, blue jeans are one of the most globally ubiquitous fashion staples. There is only one reason why at 27 we decided to make black jeans over blue: We wanted to challenge ourselves and instate the black jean as an iconic staple.

The Material

The fabric was always going to be sourced from Okayama - a town in Japan renowned for their denim manufacturing. Out of all the choices, we decided to partner with Kuroki Denim. Their black selvage denim has been used in styles ranging from American vintage to high brand fashion houses. Kuroki Denim’s expertise is of the highest quality. Compared to other black denim fabric which can look one-tone and flat, Kuroki’s black color expression is rounded with a subtle bluish tinge. It was the perfect fabric for our interpretation of the black jean.

The denim is weighted at 12 oz per square yard. For some context, Levis 505 is 13.8 oz, and most popular jeans use around 14 oz. Therefore, our 27 black jeans will be considered a ‘lightweight’ denim. The weave is looser, which lowers the weight per square yard, which in turn increases the material’s flexibility. We believe this softness in give will make our jeans more comfortable for the wearer.

The denim was made of cotton straight yarn. Using a rope-dyeing machine, the warp (the yarn that runs downwards) was dyed using white medium processing, which dyes the surface while leaving the core white. For the weft (the yarn that runs across and is threaded over and under the warp), we used a cheese dyeing machine with a sulfur dyeing process, suited for dark colors. In this way, we hope to bring out the most of a denim’s aging process, and the wearer can enjoy the experience of color-fade. In order to bring out the unique texture of a vintage jean, we used an old shuttle loom from the 1950’s to weave the fabric. Fabrics made from these vintage machines are recognized by its signature red self-finished edges, or to use a literal translation from Japanese - ‘red ears’. These old looms are time consuming and not efficient for today’s mass production demands, which is why they are rarely used anymore.

The Manufacturing

Seemingly simple, our black jeans are created using no less than eight sewing machines. Three of these are made by the company ‘Union Special,’ which are now known as vintage machines, made famous by Levi’s. Union Specials were used in the waistband, backrise (hip stitch), and cuff.

The Details

The Hip Stitch - The most classic use case of the Union Special are the Levi’s 501’s where the backrise is sewn with a seam that is measured at 7.93mm. For our 27 jeans, we are using the Union Special ¼ inch wide double-needle chain stitch machine to get a seam of just 6.35mm. Although a subtle difference of 1.53mm, vintage denim lovers will recognise the stylish difference in the backside and hip silhouette resulting from the narrowing in stitching. It is worth noting that in the 1940’s most backrises were also sewn at the narrower width of 6.35mm.

The Selvedge - Most denim selvedge is 20mm in width (10mm to the left and right). For 27, we went narrower by 4mm at 16mm (8mm to the left and right) for the same subtle effect as the above.

The Cuff - Most denim cuffs are stitched at 10mm from the hem. However, in order to better showcase the discolouration and much desired roping effect caused by the vintage chain stitch sewing machine, we have narrowed the cuff’s width to 8mm. This also is the same width as the selvedge, making for an overall evenly balanced finish.

The Leather Patch - Levi’s were using leather patches up until 1953, but switched to paper patches to accommodate mass-production the following year. For our 27 black jeans, we used 1.5mm black-dyed horse leather. We made sure that the leather did not shrink or lose its softness even after several washes. We also chose the leather due to its sheen and fine grain, which elevates the denim overall.

The Fade - To fade or not to fade? That is the question. We asked ourselves again, how do we define basic-wear, and who are the people who wear basics? Should we not stick to a one-wash basic jean? Yet distressed jeans are ubiquitous now; its versatility too, make for an ideal addition to a capsule closet. And the fact was, we were partnering with one of the best denim manufacturers in the world, sought after by fashion maisons for their fade process.

It is our philosophy that every piece, regardless of its simplicity, is worn to express our uniqueness. We therefore decided to give our wearers an option between a one-wash process, or with an applied ‘used’ fade. Due to the manufacturer's hand washing of each piece, both promise a unique color fade expression. We recommend getting both options and playing with the pant length!

All in all - we put a lot of love and thought into the remaking of the black jeans, 27 style. The material is light with a bit of stretch, unlike the make of the vintage jeans. But the more flexible the material, the loss of integrity in shape and size; we therefore had to be creative and maintain a balance between the two sides. It was also a tall order to find a manufacturer that would use vintage machines like those used in the 40s and 50s. The roping effect and discoloration is due to the inefficiencies of these machines, and many manufacturers no longer use it for these reasons. We knew we wanted these details, and relied on the best of the best to have it delivered. The fabric was woven with a 1950’s machine, and then sewn together with a machine from the same era. We did this to maintain the integrity of the period, and to create the best black jeans we could possibly make as an ode to the workwear we have come to love so much. We hope you enjoy your own unique fade, whiskers, and roping that will be discovered over time, wash, and wear.

The Sizing - We will be offering the jeans in 5 inch sizes: 28, 30, 32, 34 and 36. For each waist size, we have 3 pant length options (see size chart below). For each size, we altered both the front rise and the back pocket size. How a pocket looks relative to the hip, is highly dependent on its ratio. Therefore it was important to us to have the pocket size vary for each size option - details that are no longer available in today’s mass market.

The cuff - Chain stitching on the cuff is also one of our design points. We would love to have you enjoy the original 27 chain stitch, which is why we decided to offer 3 different options on pant length for every waist size. Why not get two pairs with different lengths and have fun with the different styles, by wearing it at ankle length or keeping it long to fold up the cuff? Whatever your style, we have 15 sizes (5 waist sizes, x3 pant lengths for each) to choose from.

A: Waist

D: Width. The width from the intersection of the cross of the crotch seam to the side of the pants
E: Knee. Measure the width of the leg at 35cm below from the center of the crotch where the four panels meet.
F: Bottom Width
G: Inseam
