Project 27

27 is an entire wardrobe, made up of 27 essential basics. Our goal is to deliver a “minimal closet.” We are passionate about the design, manufacturing process, and branding. Our goal is to launch 3-4 pieces a year through the READYFOR crowdfunding platform. Each piece will be inscribed with a distinct production number; because every piece of clothing should be unique – just like you.

 

When 27 announced Vol. 01: The Grey T-Shirt on the READYFOR platform, we received interest from all over the world resulting in an oversubscription of our production goal. The following three volumes - Vol. 02: The Chino Trouser, Vol.03: The Basque Shirt, and Vol.04: The White Shirt, have similarly concluded. In May we were able to deliver our Vol.04 orders to all our customers. And in June we held a live performance event in Tokyo with dancer Aoi Yamada and Masafumi Ito to celebrate our recent launch. This was the first time we were able to meet and interact with our customers since we commenced project 27 two years ago. Introducing Vol. 05 -

The Towel Hoodie

 

For Vol. 05 of our capsule collection, we are launching ‘The Towel Hoodie’. 15 years ago, two of our founders, Kawamura and Fujiki, created a brand that became the basis of project 27. When “The Brand with No Name” was launched, terrycloth towel was not part of streetwear fashion as we are starting to see today. It was also around the time when our director, Kawamura, had his first-born son. Kawamura recalls how the baby was wrapped in a soft towel the moment he left his mother’s womb, staying bundled as he lay down in his baby bed. The idea to use organic terrycloth towel for our hoodie was born out of the hope to bring back that very first coziness that we felt as infants. Our challenge, however, was in making a hoodie using material with hardly any stretch to it. Fortunately, we have had opportunity in manufacturing terry-cloth pieces before and seen loyal following due to its multifunctional use: from streetwear, homewear, and activewear with surfers donning the pullover after coming out of the ocean. Once again, we have reexamined and applied our own 27 twist to deliver the best possible version of ‘The Towel Hoodie’.

 

 

The Material

Everyone is familiar with terrycloth, from as early as the day we were born. Have you ever known someone to dislike a soft towel? Yet we had to ask ourselves - why isn’t this universally loved fabric widely incorporated into our everyday wear? To answer this, we examined the most commonly used textiles, and finally found a suitable 100% cotton soft terry-cloth as an alternative to cashmire, silk and rayon. Based in Japan, the luxury towel brand UCHINO has 34 branches globally, exclusivity on a luxury cruise line, and can boast of many celebrity fans. The brand offers ‘comfort, happiness, and a good night’s sleep.’ We have decided to collaborate with UCHINO and use their terrycloth for a unique, 27 interpretation of the hoodie.

The external layer is a marshmallow-like pile made by spinning extra-long staple cotton fibers into an exceptionally fine zero-twist yarn. The internal layer that touches the skin is made up of layers of gauze. By combining the two, we get a double-face fabric that is lightweight, moisture absorbent, quick-dry, breathable, and that maintains our body temperature. Additionally, this material is patented and is Oeko-tex certified under the Oeko-tex Standard 100 for textile products.

 

The Manufacturing

Our focus for this project is ‘comfort first’. To that end, and to the extent that it was possible, we have tucked the stitching away from the skin. Due the fabric’s tendency to rip from the seams, we also safeguarded the sewing. To achieve these improvements, we needed a factory of exceptional skill in manufacturing terry-cloth products. We looked no further than UCHINO’s own factory. For our hoodie collaboration with UCHINO, we specified what fashion details we wanted, and designed the silhouette after our favorite American-made vintage sweatshirt. We intentionally decided against any zippers and buttons and instead mimicked the babies' ‘onesie' - to maximize both its soft comfort, and versatility as basic wear.

We believe our 27 Vol. 05 Towel Hoodie offers the best experience of cozy comfort. For those who would wear it at night, the hoodie has all the qualities that promises a good sleep - moisture absorbent & quick to dry, and breathable. The high-quality material will maintain your body temperature, providing comfort and support in your everyday. We also styled it so it could be also used as streetwear and hope our customers will enjoy the hoodie through its multiple functionalities.

* Dry the hoodie in the drier for additional plush feel.

The Concept Book

We will be issuing a concept book with every launch - a total of 27 stories in which we “read” our clothes. The book will be written by Satoshi Tsuruta, book design by Koji Miyazoe, and edited by Yosuke Fujiki. Together they hope to bring about an imaginative interpretation of the concept behind 27: the intangible self, expressed through tangible clothes.

The book is exclusive to our 27 subscribers. Every book’s look and feel will be heavily influenced by the launched piece; the series will pass through 27 different worlds and perspectives.

 

Our Vol. 01, featured photographs of the internationally renowned photographer Daido Moriyama with the Grey T-shirt. In Vol. 02, we collaborated with artist MIC*ITAYA and explored the theme of “Love and Peace” for our Chino Trouser launch. For Vol. 03, we used a composition by Sarah Moon – a renowned fashion photographer, as inspiration to a story with The Basque Shirt,. In celebration of Vol. 04, we put on a performance with dancer and expressionist, Aoi Yamada, who danced as a Bride in a White Shirt. For this instalment, we are excited to collaborate with author Daiki Shimaguchi, who was recently nominated for the 166th Akutagawa Prize in Japanese Literature. We are looking forward to challenging ourselves with artistic expression through words.
