　広島朝鮮初中高級学校の学芸会で遭遇した子どもたちのパフォーマンスのすばらしさは今でもはっきり覚えています。彼らの演技はたくみで、日ごろの鍛錬の成果をくまなく発揮し、とても美しいものでした。また、当日そこここで見かけたコミュニティ意識に感銘を受けたことも覚えています。子どもたちが最高の演技を見せることができたのは、コミュニティの力だったと思います。コミュニティが心を一つにして応援し、笑い合い、見守り、拍手喝采する。アウトサイダーとしての印象は「みんながみんなを気遣うすばらしいコミュニティだ」ということでした。

　広島朝鮮学校が「高校無償化制度」から除外され、それを受けてこれまでの助成金が受けられなくなったことを知り、憮然とするばかりです。永年にわたって日本のコリアン・コミュニティがたどってきた苦難の歴史を考えると、日本がさらなる過ちを繰り返すことなどあり得ないと思っていましたが、そうではなかった。その結果、朝鮮学校の生徒たちが、快適で、充実した、恵まれた環境の中で学ぶことができるようにすることが、広島に住むわれわれの責任になりました。快適な学校生活は、生徒たちやコリアン・コミュニティに資することはいうまでもありませんが、ひいては、広島の社会のためになることはわかっています。コリアは、美しく、活気にあふれ、知的かつ重要な国でありながら、世界から不当に虐げられてきましたが、その豊かな伝統文化で世界に大きく貢献してきました。広島のコリアン・コミュニティを日本一のハッピー・コミュニティにするため、広島から平和文化を発信するため、みなさまのご協力をお願いします。

One of the most impressive experiences I have had in Hiroshima was attending the Gakugeikai of the Korean School in Hiroshima. The children were amazingly talented, well trained and rehearsed. They performed beautifully. But another important part of the experience was the sense of community I saw all around me. I firmly believe the children were able to perform at their best because everyone in that hall wanted each of them to succeed. The community cheered as one, laughed as one, stood up as one, and applauded as one. I was not a member of the community so I cannot say anything about how they were feeling, but my impression as an outsider was, “This is a beautiful community that cares about each other.”

   I was devastated to learn that the Japanese government is refusing to subsidize Korean schools in Japan. Given the extensive, well known history of discrimination and hardship suffered by the Korean community in Japan, I would have thought that it would be impossible for Japan to be so cruel to this community. But it is. As a result, it is our responsibility, all of us living in Hiroshima, to make sure the Korean children  in our city have a comfortable, well equipped, well funded school. A good school is, of course, a great benefit to the children and the Korean community, but in the long run,  a strong Korean community will greatly benefit Hiroshima. Korea is an extremely beautiful, energetic, intelligent and important country that has been badly mistreated by the rest of the world, and yet, the Korean people are making great cultural contributions around the world. Let’s all do our best to make sure Hiroshima has the happiest Korean community in Japan. Making everyone happy is what it means to be a peace culture city, and peace culture, as we all know, will be good for Hiroshima, Japan, Korea, Asia, and the world.
