プロジェクトのその後

 

 

怒涛の春があっという間に過ぎ、朝晩がまだ肌寒い中、もう早６月を終えようとしています。

１月末のクラウドファンディング終了後からのこの数ヶ月、CURLY FLATS FARMではスタッフの入れ替わりを始め、実にいろいろなことがありました。

隣家の牧場再生への道はそれでも少しずつ前進しています。

 

 

南側の旧豚舎

 

春のうちに、南側の旧豚舎の崩れかけた外壁のほとんどを取り除きました。
すでに内側の断熱材がボロボロに剥がれ、表面のトタン壁も多くが腐っていたので、その内部にあった木材の下地が傷んでいるところが多く見られます。

 

 

 

 

ここは、いずれしっかりした外壁を貼る予定ですが、海からの風が真っ直ぐに当たる南側の壁は内部の腐食を防ぐ必要がありました。

新しいスタッフのご家族が解体後に残った使えそうなトタンを一つ一つ選り分けて集め、「とりあえず」の外壁を貼ってくれました。
幸い太い梁はみなまだ無事なので、細かい部分の芯材を新たに補強し、屋根を補修するのみで済みそうです。

 

 

草刈りと清掃

牧場の外回りも手入れが始まりました。

住宅があったあたりの草を一掃、木々の余計な枝も払い、風通しをよくしました。
蔓性の頑固な雑草がすでに住宅の基礎から壁の内側まで入り込んでいて、取り除いたスタッフが四苦八苦していました。

 

背丈よりも高く茂っていた雑草が綺麗に取り除かれると、裏庭の小さな花畑や道具を洗う流し台、鉄製の橋の下には、菖の株とともに小さな池と小川が姿を現しました。

 

 

 

 

 

新しいフェンス

 

牧場の外周をぐるりと囲む鹿除けフェンスも新たに延長され、新しいエリアに通じる道を新たにもう一本造成しました。

羊たちの放牧地がいよいよ広がり、出産のために屋内で春を過ごした山羊たちも新しく自由に行き来できる放牧地と住いに移りました。（すみません、これの写真がない・・・）

 

 

 

次の冬が来る前に…

 

このあとは、次の雪の時期までにやることが満載です。

雪解けと大雨で悩まされたぬかるみの道は一部を補修して歩道として使っています。家畜への配膳は新しく広がったファームの外周の道路を使うことになりました。

ぬかるみの道を予備道路として機能するようにある程度は補修を完了しなくてはなりません。
動物たちの住まいも冬に備えた補修が必要になります。

家畜の出荷台（家畜を出荷する運搬用トラックにのるためのスロープ）は、ぬかるみのためにトラックも家畜も近づけなくなった今春を踏まえて、トタン 外壁を貼った旧豚舎の北側にも出荷のための場所を用意する計画です。

 

 

同時に

 

この牧場再生のプロジェクトを進めながらも常に心がけておきたいことは、元々のファームの課題も置き去りにしないということです。

数年の間に傷んだ機械・建物の手入れ、土の再生、家畜たちの生活がより良くなるように、人々が気持ちよく作業に取り組めるように、環境や仕組みを工夫していくなど、動物も人間も過ごしやすい場所を作って行けたらと考えています。

 

 

 

 

ありがたいことに

 

冬から春は自然の過酷さに久々にへこたれそうになりましたが、幸い数々の良い出会いもありました。
現在は多くの手助けのおかげで新旧のファーム両方の計画・課題が少しずつですが動き始めています。

 

夕方、餌やりのあとのほんの数分、自然に皆が集まって今日の出来事などを取り留めなく話してはカラカラと笑って家路につく。

足腰もあちこち痛んで疲労困憊だけれども、お互いを思いやり、一緒に物事に向かうということはこういう心持ち、このわずかな時間が原動力になっていくのだろうなと、プロジェクトを始めた最大の収穫がここにあるように思います。

そして、これは全てプロジェクトのメンバーと支援者のみなさんが様々な形でサポートしてくださったことによって起きていることです。

写真は、ここ数年の多忙さですっかり諦めかけていた前庭と正面ゲート前が生き生きと生まれ変わりつつある姿です。

 

 

 

 

製造も本格化

 

長らくお待たせしていた精肉・加工品の製造も、気温が低い夜の時間を活用して始まっています。

大変途切れ途切れではありますが、また少しずつSNSなどを通じて様子をお伝えできたらと思っています。

After the project

The tempestuous spring has quickly passed, the chilly mornings and evenings are yet to come, but June has already come to an ending.

In the months since the crowdfunding project completed at the end of January, a lot has happened at CURLY FLATS FARM, including staff turnover.

The road to the regeneration of the next-door farm is making some progress though.

During the spring, most of the crumbling outer wall of the old piggery on the south side was removed.
The inner insulation had already peeled away in tatters and much of the tin wall on the surface was rotten, and the timber sheathing that was inside it was damaged in many places.
We plan to eventually put up a solid external wall here, but the south side, which is exposed to the wind straight from the sea, needed to be protected from internal corrosion.
The new staff member's family picked and gathered the usable tin left over after the demolition and put up the exterior wall 'for the time being'.
Fortunately, all the thick beams are still intact, so it looks like we will only have to reinforce the minor core timbers a new one and repair the roof.


Maintenance has also started on the area around the farms' outlines.
The weeds around the area where the houses used to be have been cleared away, and the trees have been cleared of excess branches to improve fresh airflow.
Stubborn vine weeds had already invaded the foundations of the houses and inside the walls, so the staff  had to struggle to get rid of them.

Once the weeds neatly removed, a small flower garden in the backyard, a sink for washing tools and a small pond and stream appeared under the iron bridge, along with iris plants.


The deer fence also newly extended around the outskirts of the farm.
Sheep got their pasture expanded, and the goats, who spent the spring indoors for birthing, moved into their new pastures and homes.

Muddy paths, plagued by melting snow and heavy rain, have been partly fixed and using as walkways. Feeding the livestock is now done on the roads around the newly widened perimeter of the farm.
Much more work to be done after this before the next snow season.
The muddy paths will need to be repaired to at least a minimum, so that the roads can be used as a back-up road.
Animal housing will also need to be fixed and maintained in preparation for the winter.

Based on this spring, when the muddy roads made it impossible for trucks and livestock to get to the loading ramp for shipping out the livestock, a plan is to prepare another lane in the north side of the old piggery with a tin exterior wall.

One thing to always keep in mind while working on this farm revitalisation project is that the issues of the original farm will not be left behind.
We hope  by taking care of machinery and buildings that have been damaged over the years, regenerating the soil, making the livestock's lives better, and creating an environment and structure that helps people to work more comfortably.


The harshness of nature almost knocked us down after a long time during the winter and spring, but thankfully, we  had so many good encounters.
Now, thanks to a lot of help, the plans and tasks for both the old and new farm are slowly starting to move forward.

In the evening, just a few minutes after feeding, everyone gathers to chat about the busy day's work, and then heads home with a smile on their faces.
Although our legs and backs sores and we are all exhausted, we feel that this kind of spirit of caring each other and doing things together is what drives us, and this little moment is probably the biggest harvest from this project.
All of this has happened thanks to the project members and supporters who have supported us in so many ways.


The photo shows the  front gate, which we had almost given up on in the last few years because we were so busy looking after the livestock, being brought back to life.

 

After a long delay, the production of meat and processed products is now underway, in the evening hours when the temperature is cooler.
