Beyond “Bringing Smiles to Children in Hospitals”
Connecting Families and the Future through Mental Health Care

Thanks for your help to reach 100%!

We’re setting a New Goal!
(Added on December 6, 2021)

Hello,
I’m Miho Neely, Executive Director of Shine on! Kids

Thanks to the support of so many people, we were able to reach our goal of ¥10 million, 10 days before the end of the crowdfunding campaign. Thank you so much to the 664 people who donated, to those who spread the word about this challenge on social media, and to everyone who supported us in every way! By achieving 100% this time, we will be able to continue operating mental health care programs in 25 hospitals in Japan next year.

Just when we thought we had seen the light of the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, a new mutant strain emerged, and now people all over the world are forced to continue fighting this long battle. It is uncertain whether we will be able to hold fundraising events in person next year, but we do know that achieving our fundraising goals will continue to be challenging.

But it is the children we support in hospitals who have really been suffering through all of this.

No one knows when a state of emergency will be declared again and the strict COVID restrictions will return. Families are worried that those “painful” times will return. Visitations have been limited to only one guardian for a few hours a day. Children were not allowed to go outside the hospitals or to stay at home overnight. They were spending day after day without seeing their families, siblings, or friends.

Throughout Covid, most NPOs and volunteers were unable to enter the hospital wards, but we have been able to carry on our regular activities including newly launched Shine On! Connections Program. Our Hospital Facility Dog Program, in particular, added a new hospital in April, bringing the total to four hospitals nationwide. We have been able to continue our programs because our Handlers, who are certified and experienced nurses, have been working in tandem with the medical staff with sufficient infection control measures.

Shine On! Kids will be starting a full-scale training of Hospital Facility Dogs in Japan in 2022. We have set our next goal at ¥20 million in order for more hospitals in Japan can have Hospital Facility Dogs.

We are pleased to announce that we will start training additional Hospital Facility Dog teams under the new model in 2022 to address the growing needs in COVID infection.

Currently President Kim Forsythe is in Australia selecting new candidate dogs. As we’re preparing to welcome the new dogs in Japan, we are also working on building a system and securing personnel to strengthen the training program for the existing teams.

None of these will be possible without your support. It cost about ¥8 million each to raise Ty and Masa, the first Hospital Facility Dogs raised and trained in Japan.

It was difficult to receive conventional funding for this unprecedented challenge. However, we were able to make it happen because we had our own funds, which came from your donations. Based on what we have achieved together with you, we are determined to solidify and develop the project in the future.

There are only 10 days left until the end of the crowdfunding.

The support we have received toward our next goal will be used for operating expenses of Shine On! Kids including Hospital Facility Dog training program expenses.

We truly appreciate your continued support for bringing smiles and a bright future to as many children with pediatric cancer and other serious illnesses as possible.

Bringing Smiles to Children Now and the Future with Mental Health Care

Hello, We are Shine On! Kids, a certified NPO.

Since 2010, we have been working to introduce Hospital Facility Dogs to hospitals in Japan in order to bring smiles, courage, and mental health care to hospitalized children and their families.

Our sincere gratitude to everyone who donated ¥13,260,000 for our last crowdfunding campaign, “Project 2021: Bringing Hospital Facility Dogs to the Future.” Thanks to your support, we were able to continue our activities even though our opportunity to ask for donations has been drastically reduced due to the Covid pandemic.

Even before the spread of the novel coronavirus, our activities, including the Hospital Facility Dog Program, were supported by donations from many people.

It has been 15 years since the establishment of the organization and 11 years since the introduction of the Hospital Facility Dog Program. The total number of children who have interacted with the Hospital Facility Dogs has exceeded 60,000*.

*By the end of FY 2020 ending on March 31, 2021, a total of 61,583 children have come into contact with the Hospital Facility Dogs at the three hospitals.

These children are now becoming adults -- some are studying at vocational schools or universities, some have already started working, and some are aspiring to become nurses, physical therapists, or other medical professionals. Also some of their siblings have chosen medical careers because of their proximity with illnesses.

Shine On! Kids has continued its activities with the mission of "bringing smiles to children in hospitals.”

We have been hearing many stories not only from hospitalized children, but also from children and their families who are now moving on to the next chapter after their battle with illness is over. It reminds us of the significance of Hospital Facility Dog's activities once again.

We continue to expand the possibilities of mental health care through various new initiatives.

Shine On! Kids’ programs, including the Hospital Facility Dog Program, are currently operating in 25 locations in Japan, and are expected to provide support to some 10,000 children in hospitals and under long-term care and their families.

We need your support to continue our mental health care activities.

“Bringing smiles to hospitalized children and their families, now and in the future.”

We hope that as many people as possible will learn about our current activities and the vision for the future and give us support. Thank you.

Facility Dogs to Support Children in Hospitals

A Hospital Facility Dog is a specially trained dog that works full-time at a hospital with a dedicated Handler. As a team, they support children with cancer and other serious illnesses and their families.

Shine On! Kids has placed six Hospital Facility Dogs in Japan so far.

Currently Ty, at Shizuoka Children's Hospital, Annie, at Kanagawa Children's Medical Center, Ivy, at Tokyo Metropolitan Children's Medical Center, and Masa, at the National Center for Child Health and Development are working full-time.

Ty took over the activities at Shizuoka Children's Hospital. Yogi is now enjoying his retirement life in Nagano.

|Activities Continue uninterrupted During COVID Pandemic

The spread of Covid has had a great impact on children in hospitals. Although the situation is currently somewhat eased, very strict protocols have been implemented in hospitals -- visitation was limited to only one person a day for an extremely short time, and overnight stays on weekends were suspended.

Under these circumstances, the need for mental health care for children who have lost contact with their families and friends has become more urgent than ever. In the midst of this, our four Hospital Facility Dogs and their Handlers have been able to continue their activities without a single interruption.

There are two reasons for this.

Firstly,

our Handlers are medical professionals, so they can conduct their activities with proper infection control measures.

As a result of our thorough implementation of infection control measures from the pre-COVID, we have not had any accidents or problems in the past 11 years, which has made it possible for us to carry on during COVID pandemic.

Secondly,

the Hospital Facility Dog Program is supported by grants and donations from the general public.

The Hospital Facility Dog’s activities are also funded by the hospitals, but these funds only cover the implementation costs (visitation costs and handler labor costs).

It is through your donations that we are able to manage and coordinate the program and train Hospital Facility Dogs in Japan, which requires a huge amount of funds.

On July 1 this year, we launched our Hospital Facility Dog Program at  the National Center for Child Health and Development (NCCHD).

As the need for mental health care increases due to the pandemic, more and more Hospital Facility Dogs are needed to encourage children in hospitals.

Our Hospital Facility Dog program has been going 11 years. Now, so many children are saying that a Hospital Facility Dog has helped them become more positive about their treatment and rehabilitation. We have also heard many stories from families who have witnessed and have felt the importance of Hospital Facility Dogs' support.

Stories from the Program Participants

Mako was hospitalized for childhood leukemia and met Bailey, our first Hospital Facility Dog, in 2010 when he was just making his debut.

Mako’s high school life was taken away by her illness. There was a huge gap between her school life and her life in a ward filled with younger children.

She was building an emotional wall around herself and suffering from the side effects of the treatment. But Bailey's arrival brought about a big change. Painful days became something to look forward to by thinking, “I will see Bailey again.”

Today, Hospital Facility Dogs are working full-time five days a week, but at that time, they were only allowed to visit a limited number of wards three days a week because they were the first of their kind in Japan.

One day, Mako and her friend asked the president of the hospital directly for Bailey to work every day. Then Bailey was able to go to work every day.

Mako’s dreams for the future changed after meeting Bailey and his Handler, Yuko Morita.

Now, Mako is working as a nurse.

   Mako

Left: After surviving a life-threatening infection, the first thing she said when she woke up was, “Where is Bailey?”

Right: She became a nurse and reunited with Bailey at a Shine On! Kids event

Even though he didn't speak, Bailey comforted me and my family. When I was suffering from the side effects of the treatment, he stayed beside us and watched over us as if he understood everything. When I was feeling well, he asked me to spoil him.

I always hated hospitals and could not imagine becoming a nurse.

But now, because of what I went through, I understand how patients feel.

Variety of Programs to Nurture the Future of Children

The cure rate of childhood cancer has improved to about 70% to 80%* due to medical advances in recent years.

Consequently, there is an increasing need for support for childhood cancer survivors to return to society and become independent. This is because as many as 60% of childhood cancer survivors spend their entire lives dealing with "late effects" and experience new physical and mental challenges.

Mental health care for children is becoming more important in supporting their future after discharge from the hospital.

Shine On! Kids has been planning and implementing various programs alongside the Hospital Facility Dog Program, based on many encounters and insights we have gained through years.

・  ・  ・

Shine On! Friends

Launched in September 2021, this is a website that facilitates communication among childhood cancer survivors, by childhood cancer survivors.

In the world of pediatric oncology, groups of parents and other related groups have been organized by types of cancer in each medical institution. While peer support was widening, there have been few places for children to share their experiences and engage in dialogues.

To address this issue, we launched "Shine On! Friends." (https://shineonfriends.org/)

・  ・  ・

Beads of Courage®

Beads of Courage® is a program designed by Jean Baruch, who worked as a pediatric oncology nurse in the United States.

By connecting colorful beads that correspond to a specific part of their medical treatment -- a black bead for a blood draw, a face bead for a hair loss, etc. -- children are able to tackle their treatments in a positive way and are more likely to talk about their painful experiences. The beads they connect are proof of their courage. The program has been shown to reduce stress and increase resilience among the children.

As of September 2021, the program is being conducted as a part of mental health care at 24 children's hospitals and pediatric wards in Japan.

・  ・  ・

Camp Courage

Camp Courage, launched in 2017, is a workshop for childhood cancer patients and survivors, especially adolescents and young adults.

The childhood cancer survivors who are mainly junior and senior high school students and above, gather together to plan and manage the camp where they meet people, experience and learn things that benefit their future. The goal is to create a strong circle of people who can break barriers by doing what they are good at and love to do, and to create a community that turns the experience of childhood cancer treatment into confidence.

・  ・  ・

Shine On! Connections

This program was made possible by the donation of ¥5,416,000 from our crowdfunding campaign "Online Activities for Hospitalized Children in COVID" that we held last year.

With your donations, we were able to distribute 22 iPads and projectors to 11 hospitals to deliver online activities to hospitalized children.

Unique projects have been created, such as a virtual field trip to Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, a virtual safari tour to Kruger National Park in South Africa, and a virtual work experience that will help children learn for the future.

We believe there are new opportunities to support children virtually, by creating experiences that can help children dream and create a positive vision for their future.

Stories from the Program Participants

Ichino was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer, when she was five years old. At the age of 10, when the disease recurred, she was introduced to Beads of Courage®.

It helped her to keep a record of her treatments, but also choosing and collecting cute handmade beads with other children in the same hospital room brought joy to her life in the hospital.

When she was discharged from the hospital, she disassembled some of the beads and made them into key chains charms and others and gifted them to her friends and those who had supported her.

When she became a junior high school student, Ichino started thinking of doing her part, so she and her mother had attended various events including Shine On! Kids' pediatric cancer awareness seminar. She has been communicating with Shine On! Kids staff members since then.

 Ichino

I had been wanting to work in healthcare in the future. Then when I was in junior high school, Shine On! Kids invited me to give a speech to introduce Beads of Courage® at their charity gala party.

It was a big party where about 70% of the guests were foreigners. So I decided and tried to give a speech in English. In retrospect, I feel the opportunity gave me  momentum, and I have become more confident since then.

An ordinary junior high school student will never have an opportunity to speak on stage in front of hundreds of people at an upscale party. I was nervous, but I got a lot of applause, and when I got off the stage, many people said to me, "Ichino, that was great," and took pictures with me. I realized that if you challenge yourself just a little bit, your world will expand.

Later, when I was in high school, I did a homestay in Australia. There were very few organizations that would accept me as I had lost one kidney and had late complications. It took a lot to finally get there. Were it not for my mother, I wouldn't have been able to have done this. She was even more daring than I was. She researched, worked, and never gave up.

Participating in the projects of various organizations taught me a lot. Especially Shine On! Kids events and gala parties were great experiences.

Never give up on what you want to do. Thanks to the many people who have supported me, I have been able to take on challenges before giving up.

Ichino is currently studying at a university to become a clinical laboratory technician.

In fact, the hospital where Ichino was hospitalized and still goes as an outpatient now has the Hospital Facility Dog Program. Ichino initiated the call by sending a letter to the hospital asking to launch the program there. Then many people rallied around her helping it to materialize.

She recently got her driver's license and started to enjoy long distance driving with her family. Ichino is taking on a var

Shine On! Kids has been working with children with cancer and other serious illnesses and their families for about 15 years, introducing innovative programs such as animal-assisted therapy, art therapy, peer support for pediatric cancer survivors, and an online program to provide urgent support in COVID.

We are proud to say that the participants of our mental health care programs are now out of the hospital and are making the most of their experiences. They are active in various fields and contributing to society, which we find deeply moving.

All your donations will be used for Shine On! Kids' activities with great care. We appreciate your continued support.

Future Vision

Due to the spread of Covid, hospitalized children are now going through greater hardships.

Although the situation has eased somewhat with the lifting of the state of emergency, there are still many hospitals that have strict protocols in place such as closing of playrooms, no overnight stays on weekends, reduced visiting hours, and only one of the parents can see the child.

Shine On! Kids has been able to carry on our Hospital Facility Dog and Beads of Courage® programs without interruption. We now have new requests for implementation of the programs including two hospitals for Hospital Facility Dog and three hospitals for Beads of Courage®.

Shine On! Connections, which launched just last year, has also been continuing online activities responding to non-stop requests from the participating hospitals.

Since its inception, our mission has been to stand by children from diagnosis to discharge and beyond, based on the principle of total care to enrich their lives.

Having supported and watched over children for many years, we realize the immense value of mental health care for children during their hospitalization, and that it resonates for their future.

In the future, we will expand our activities so that both our mainstay Hospital Facility Dog Program and Beads of Courage® will be implemented as a part of standard treatment in all hospitals, especially in the 15 pediatric cancer hospitals in Japan.

In addition, in order to address changes in the social landscape, we will develop and introduce new programs as needed, while researching and analyzing digitalization and the latest methods of mental health care around the world so that we can support as many children as possible.

In 2021, we are still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. But for that very reason, we hope to steadily deliver programs that connect children to the future.

Your donation is essential for us to realize our vision. We appreciate your warm support.

Deduction of donations

Tax Deduction for Donations

Donations to Shine On Kids, a certified NPO, are tax-deductible*.

*Donations to this project will be tax-deductible for 2022 income

Donations made by individuals to certified NPOs are eligible for a tax deduction (tax credit) and receive preferential tax treatment.

Normally, taxes are paid to the government, and the government decides how to use them and allocate them. However, if you donate to a "certified NPO," you can get a tax deduction for about half of the amount, which is a system that allows donors to directly choose the NPO they want to donate to and have them use the tax money without going through the government.

For corporations as well, donations to certified NPOs are now eligible for a much wider range of expenses under the tax law.

Individual Donors

If you are filing a tax return for a tax credit for a certified NPO, you will receive a tax benefit if you donate a total of 2,001 yen or more during the fiscal year (January 1 to December 31).
