Support the renovation of the Kita Nohgakudo
Half a century after its construction, an unprecedented crisis of survival

The Kita Nohgakudo (official name: Kita Roppeita 14th Memorial Noh Theater), which plays a crucial role in the life of one of the five shite-kata (main performer) schools of Japan, the Kita-school; is now at a crossroads. 

 

Since opening its doors in 1973, the Kita Nohgakudo, located in Meguro Tokyo, has undergone a number of repairs for maintenance and upkeep. However, now after half a century, the building is showing its age and with the future of the Kita-school in mind we have been brainstorming ways to move forward, and have decided to perform a large-scale renovation of the existing building. The total cost of the renovation is set at ¥400 million JPY (approx. $3.25 million USD)

 

The Nippon Foundation, which provided financial assistance for the original construction, has offered to subsidize half of the total construction cost. In addition, we have also received thoughtful donations from people involved in the world of noh and fans of the Kita-school. With that said, nearly 10 million yen is still yet needed to meet the current budget.

 

Protecting the Kita-ryu Nohgakudo as a freestanding building devoted to the art of noh, will not not only help propel the tradition of the Kita-ryu into the future, it also fulfills a responsibility we feel we have to not only the noh world, as one of the five representative shite-kata (main performer) schools, but also to Japan. It is another way we are performing our duty to pass on our traditional culture.

 

With this large-scale renovation, the Kita Nohgakudo will begin a new journey.
