PROJECT: Renovation and improvement of Mushroom Cultivation House and the Promoting and Disseminating Mushroom Cultivation methods to the local villagers are the main core activities in this project

In this project, we would like to utilize the donated money for the following activities.

1. Renovation and Improvement of Mushroom Cultivation House (Wood, Bamboo, Wires, Tin sheet, Blue sheet, etc.) …. 75,000 Japanese yen
2. Purchase of necessary materials for mushroom cultivation (mushroom spores, rice straw, saw dusts, polyester bags, permanent markers) …. 75,000 Japanese yen
3. Instalment of necessary machines which possibly allow mushroom cultivation to success effectively (Direct Current water pump, Humidifier, water pipes, etc.) …. 305,000 Japanese yen
4. Mushroom cultivation trainings for the villagers who will grow mushroom in their land …. 10,000 Japanese yen
5. Purchase of a second hand vehicle for efficiently connecting with the villagers …. 300,000 Japanese yen
6. Electricity …. 10,000 Japanese yen
7. Petrol …. 12,000 Japanese yen
8. Staff salary (Carpenter for renovation of the mushroom cultivation house, Baby sitter, one/two staff who work for disseminating mushroom cultivation methods under my husband) …. 330,000 Japanese yen

Total: 1,117,000 Japanese yen

As it has been noted earlier, we already practiced growing mushroom with the students in the school where my husband and I work. In this project, we would like to renovate the same mushroom cultivation house which will be the model mushroom cultivation house for the beneficiaries. It is inevitable that the new mushroom cultivation house should be the one in which we can harvest mushrooms for a whole year. We have to increase the shelves on which the mushroom will be placed. We also need to renovate walls and roof, and strengthen the floor.

Furthermore, in Khoupum the rainfalls decrease some year, and villagers are faced with water scarcity. In order to make mushroom cultivation successful and harvest as much mushroom as possible, it is very important to control the humidity in the mushroom cultivation house. Besides, we need to secure the water resource which will be used for irrigation for mushroom. Therefore, by receiving the donated money, we would like to install the Direct Current water pump and water pipes for collecting the groundwater and humidifier to control the room humid in the mushroom cultivation house.

What the most important in implementing this project is that we will not terminate the project just after disseminating the skills and knowledge of mushroom cultivation, but together with the beneficiaries, my husband and I have to keep endeavouring, so that the support from everyone can change the life of the beneficiaries into the better one. In fact, it is, of course, necessary to organise several trainings for the beneficiaries to learn and understand the system and process of mushroom cultivation. Adding to that, it is important that my husband and his staff visit the beneficiaries and observe their mushroom, repeat the follow-ups and share the problems and doubts with the beneficiaries. The purchase of the vehicle is, thus, necessary to go around the house to house and make the follow-ups more efficient in Khoupum. By using the vehicle, it is also possible to collect together the bulk of harvested mushrooms from the beneficiaries and sell them in the stores or individual houses. The purchase of the vehicle can make marketing more efficient.

VISION: Vitalization of the village for the long term is our ultimate goal in this project

It is the first objective of this project that my husband and I, and all beneficiaries will be capable to grow and harvest mushroom regularly and continuously for a whole year, and to sell at the stores or individual houses within Khoupum.

Mushroom is quit a demanded agricultural product in Manipur. Not only just in Khoupum valley, but also in the capital city of the state, Imphal which is approximately 3 hours away from Khoupum by car, its demand has become increasing. If we success to sell mushroom in the big cities where most of the consumers earn more income than they do in Khoupum, it means that we can contribute to the income generation for the beneficiaries. So, the second objective of this project is that we would like to sell the mushroom in the state capital city, Imphal, while considering the harvested amount and the situation of Covid-19 infection.   

Besides, along with the fast-developing Indian economy, the number of overseas Japanese workers have been increasing in the metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, etc. Adding to that, the number of Japanese restaurant and Japanese foods grocery shops has also increased. If we successfully develop and produce the processed mushroom foods which can be preserved longer than the fresh ones and regarded as value added products, we can expand the marketing to the consumers in such big cities in the future. After we terminate this project, we would like to continue the new project which is directed to the research and development of processed mushroom products and the instalment of several machines such as a mushroom dryer and packing machines. 

Moreover, in India nowadays, it is said that Shiitake mushroom is thought to be more nutritious than any other varieties of mushroom. Hence, in the future, we also would like to seek for further possibilities such as participating in the Shiitake mushroom cultivation trainings and invitation of the professionals for exploring and learning cultivation methods of other varieties of mushroom. 

As a result of implementing this mushroom cultivation project, we can continue the several related projects afterward as mentioned above, which also produce the new possibilities. We believe that these experiences can result in an increase in the income and improvement of standard of living of the beneficiaries, and mushroom cultivation will surely bring about the new phenomena which can vitalise the whole villages of Khoupum valley.
