Save Street Cats in Indonesia - Please support This Activity

Project Story

SELF INTRODUCTION

Nice to meet you, my name is Atsushi Sohara (55).

I have been in Indonesia for about 15 years since I was in my 30s because of my work. This is my fourth stay, but just about three years ago, I started dating with local cats on the streets, spending my leisure time such as weekends. (Currently returning to Japan)

At first, I was only feeding cats on the streets in the neighborhood irregularly, but gradually as I became aware of the harsh life of cats and the circumstances of the local residents, I started doing daily feeding and frequent medical care. Also getting collaborators, it has evolved into setting up a cat house dedicated for streets cats, arranging contraceptive surgery for them and so on. I would like to challenge crowdfunding this time and raise funds to continue this activity.

THE REASON FOR LAUNCHING THE PROJECT
Medical Care In Addition To Feeding
In the first few months of this activity, the main focus was on feeding cats on the street who couldn't get a satisfying meal for days, and sometimes having an exceptionally delicious meal that they could eat with peace of mind. It was also an irregular feeding only when I had time to spare.

However, soon after that, in addition to feeding, sick cats, especially cats that do not eat even if fed, may be transported to a veterinary clinic, or cats that are stuck in a car may be transported. Such medical care has been added.

Initially, after a few days, sometimes weeks of hospitalization, depending on the degree of recovery, I either returned them to the original place immediately or rehabilitated them at home for a while and then returned to the original place.

Get People Know This Activity

At the same time, I also conducted cognitive activities, such as having a reporter from the local Japanese newspaper "The Daily Jakarta Shimbun" introduced by a friend at that time write an article.

On the streets where I am active, I have politely explained the activity to those who talk to me to get as many Indonesians as possible to understand and like. Still, it was extremely difficult to find a collaborator. I have met several Indonesians who have managed to help me with my activities, but I think I need to increase. (Currently, about 10 Indonesians, are helping the street cats.)

Need For A Street Cats House

There are many restaurants called "Ruko" in Indonesia where street cats live, but when it becomes clear that feeding activities in such places are not very welcome, I decided to open a street cat house. There is a need to make it.

Renting a house on the condition that many cats live, I started to accommodate mainly sick cats with a history of hospitalization, abandoned kittens, and kittens born on the street.

By doing this, I had fewer complaints about cats from the restaurants gradually and rather more people have been loving street cats, sometimes feeding them and making sleeping places.

Maintaining Street Cats House
On the other hand, the maintenance of the street cat house could not be done alone, so it was naturally left to the partner, Mr. Faisal. There was almost no one else who could take care of cats who are always clean as well as who can realize 5S (Sorting, Setting-in-Order, Cleaning, Standardizing, Sustaining the Discipline) more than Japanese. I am in charge of only night and Sunday, and from Monday to Saturday from 6 am to 6 pm, Mr. Faizal cooks food (fish and chicken), feeds including forced feeding, cleans floors and sand floor toilets, nebulizes cats, gives oral medicines to and transports diseased cats to the animal clinic and also makes playing tools for kittens  as well as does shopping. He has done those things completely and voluntarily.

Mr. Faizal was originally a hotel driver, but when we were excited about the street cat house, I asked, "Would you like to take care of the cats?" and he agreed immediately. As he is a father of kids, I needed to give him some salary but considering these cats, there was no other choice for me.

Need for Neutralization Surgeries
Thus, there was one more thing left to do for peace in some restaurant streets and the cat house to be free of sick and malnourished kittens.

Contraceptive castration. In Indonesia, there is almost no custom of paying for stray cats to perform surgery. Moreover, this tropical country is an environment that can breed all year round, and at most, some mother cats give birth to children a couple of times a year.

Therefore, it was extremely difficult to perform contraceptive surgery for streets cats. Although surgery is not possible during breastfeeding, if you inadvertently miss the chance of a few days that appear at the time of weaning, they are already pregnant with the next baby. Even so, I was able to perform contraceptive neutering on about 15 street cats in three years.

The Current Street Cat House
The current Street Cat House is the third one. When I was looking for a place where I could get rid of the fear of a car accident with less friction with neighbors, Indonesian freind Ms. Ning, who are also active in protecting street cats, introduced me a number of good candidate properties.

In fact, I did some preliminary inspections and found a more rural, few cars, a little inconvenient for humans, but a very reasonable place. The landlords and neighbors were all kind to cats, and it was a perfect place for a street cat house.

Currently, there are about 15 kittens under the age of one and about 15 adult cats over the age of one, for a total of about 30 cats being taken care of by Mr. Faizal and another trainee, Mr. Yudi.

All 30 cats have their name. The cats feel more at ease by being called their name and spoken to every day.

All the street cats now living in the House have different stories to meet us, but the purpose of our activity is to give a free and healthy "cat-like life" to those cats who have met us.

In Indonesia, there are several cat shelters near the capital Jakarta, but there have been some cases where most of the day is locked up in cages or small rooms.

I also visited some shelter where cats cannot get out of the dimly lit room for the rest of their life. As a result of pondering "what is the happiness for street cats" from such cases, I have come to be convinced that "cat-like life" that can coexist with humans is the most important value of this activity.

PROJECT PROFILE

In this project, I would like to give kittens under 1 year old in the House the same infectious disease vaccine as in Japan.

If the kitten is sick at the time of vaccination, it will not be possible to inoculate, so it will take some time. In this area, they will be inoculated twice until they are 1 year old. At the same time, we will also perform contraceptive neutering surgery for adult cats.

As mentioned above, the timing is difficult, so we are taking a slightly longer period. At the same time, we would like to launch an Indonesian / Japanese SNS for this activity and have as many people as possible support our animal welfare activities. The project schedule is as follows.

July-December 2010 Vaccination of the House kittens (about 20 cats)
July-December 2010 Contraceptive surgery for the House cats (a few cats per month)
July-September 2010 Launch of Indonesian Japanese SNS (updated daily)

In this crowdfunding, we would like to ask for your support regarding the costs of vaccination, contraceptive surgery, and maintenance of the Street Cat House in Indonesia.

Until now, not only these costs, but also daily food costs, medical treatment costs, rental costs of the protected cat house, and even Mr. Faizal's allowance have all been covered at my own expense, but with the expansion of the scale, they have already been reaching my limit. I really appreciate your generous support.

I hope, through crowdfunding, more people will recognize and support this activity not only in Japan but also in the world, and this activity will be a permanent and self sustaining activity.

PROJECT VISION

If this project is successful, we are thinking of expanding the patrol area for feeding and medical care. Currently, we are only touring four Ruko (restaurants) in West Java, Indonesia, but we would like to gradually expand the area.

In addition, I would like to take measures against kittens on the street at the same time by making people aware that we accept kittens that can no longer be kept by them. When that happens, the current street cat house is already too small, needing us to move to a new bigger and safer location which is more integrated into the community.

Therefore, the next project will ask supports for vaccination, neutralizing surgery and also cost to get the new bigger street cat house. By continuing such activities, we make more Indonesian street cats have a "cat-like life", making more Indonesian people to understand animal welfare.

Last but not least, thank you very much for reading this far, despite the verbose and poor content.

Please help us to make crowdfunding successful and to help Indonesian cats live in good health and happiness.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Atsushi Sohara is responsible for executing the project.
The project will finish 31 December 2022.
