Making a greener world with our hands from 2020: Reforestation by a unique Japanese method

Spreading an original Japanese forest-building method to the world this year

Thank you for visiting this page. I am Kiyokazu Kusayama, the deputy representative of Creating Native Forest for Life, and it is my great pleasure to introduce our project.
We are a collective of non-profits that plant trees by the method devised by Doctor Akira Miyawaki, professor emeritus of Yokohama National University, who is also well-known as the man who has planted over 40 million trees. We strongly believe in the following points: to spread this unique method worldwide, to make the culture of tree planting take root by involving people to plant trees on a global scale, and to restore lost forests around the world. Furthermore, we want to “plant trees in people’s hearts” through this project.
The world’s environment is rapidly deteriorating, but the move to rebuild forests is not progressing quickly enough. This is because the concept of tree-planting did not exist in other parts of the world for a long time.
To spread tree planting, we have chosen the year 2020, the year of the Tokyo Games. During the course of this year, when the world’s eyes are upon Japan, we will hold a number of planting events to showcase our activities. Our ultimate goal is to see tree planting events held worldwide as a result of our activities.
The administration and major companies have already agreed to work with us, but we still need more people to know about our project and ideals; people lack the knowledge on tree planting as well. To achieve the goals that Creating Native Forest for Life aims for, we have started this crowdfunding project. We hope you approve of our ideas and lend us a helping hand.

Our previous activities

Creating Native Forest for Life developed from organizations and individuals who are followers of Dr. Akira Miyawaki’s philosophy. Dr. Miyawaki, the representative of our organization, had been suffering from health problems recently, but wholly recovered last year. He became well enough to host a grand tree planting event on April 14, 2019 which gathered 400 participants and resulted in planting 3,000 seedlings. On this day, Dr. Miyawaki shared his ongoing passion to create forests that restore the environment.
Our philosophy is to protect not only the environment but also people’s lives. This way, we want to plant trees in people’s hearts.
One good example is the Ochiai-hachiman area in Hadano City, Kanagawa Prefecture, where we held planting events some years ago. A slope spreads along this area and the possibilities of landslides were a constant cause of worry for people living in the vicinity. However, water retention functions improved after planting trees there, greatly lessening the danger of flash floods and landslides. People in the neighborhood say the amount of water flowing from the slopes after a downpour has decreased significantly.
Another example can be seen in Iwanuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, an area that was devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. As a part of the recovery effort, a tide embankment was built along the coast of the Millennium Hope Hills, an area destroyed by the tsunami that was remade into a park, and by the Miyawaki Method, saplings native to the area were planted densely. This forest will grow to protect people’s lives from future disasters; furthermore, it has helped to plant seeds of hope in people’s hearts.

Foresting: A unique Japanese concept

Anyone must have heard of “tree planting,” but did you know that planting trees is a concept unique to Japan and also a part of its culture?
Since ancient times, the Japanese have developed a tree-planting culture and in doing so have taken care of the environment. In the Chronicles of Japan, written in the eighth century, a passage depicts how the god Susano’o no Mikoto together with his son Iso Takeru no Kami sowed seeds across Japan and how all the mountains became lush with green as a result.
As is portrayed in this episode, the Japanese have lived together with nature from ancient times, embracing and taking care of the land they lived on.
In other parts of the world, however, the situation was different: once people had developed the land to the point of making it unfit for living, they moved to other fertile places. As proof of this, many myths tell about a leader taking people from one land to another. The concept of tree planting did not take root in places like these.

Protecting the Earth’s environment and humans by creating forests

A host of issues confront us concerning our environment and among these, decreasing CO2 emissions is an immediate task the world has to tackle.
Under the slogan of economic development, humans have emitted an unprecedented amount of CO2 that has caused global warming. This has had just a few effects on us up until now, so people have given little thought to this matter. Not so far from today, however, there may come a time when our lives will be endangered by global warming.
To protect the environment in which humans can continue to live in, the only way is to cap CO2 emissions and to contain carbon in trees by creating forests. This is because forests can store huge amounts of CO2. And then, when the planted trees have matured enough, they can be cut down and be used, thus making room to plant seedlings again. By doing this we can reduce CO2 in the air and also realize an economic cycle. We can improve the environment by planting trees and using them.
In our tree planting we adopt the Miyawaki Method that uses potted seedlings and we plant them so they grow into forests in about ten years. This method chooses trees according to potential natural vegetation, in which three seedlings are planted in one square meter. This promotes natural competition and initiates forests to grow faster than by other ways.
There is much talk about unkempt woods that have become wasted. On the other hand, old forests that have survived through the ages have not been tended by people but are healthy. What is the difference between these two? The former are man-made economic woods of cedars and cypresses that have to be taken care of, while the latter are rich forests composed of trees native to the area. The Miyawaki Method creates rich, real forests, abound with life.
Planting a tree is a small step, but with your help, we would like to spread tree-planting across the world to create a big force.

Our first tree-planting event of 2020

Through this crowdfunding, we are planning to hold our first big project of 2020: a tree-planting event on a patch of wasted land in a mountain in Hadano City, Kanagawa Prefecture, followed by an international symposium held indoors.
The symposium will have a speaker from the Ministry of Environment and spotlight participants from Europe and India, complete with simultaneous interpretation, so that our concepts will be understood worldwide. These precious visitors from outside Japan will take part in both the tree planting and the symposium, so it will be a wonderful opportunity for them to take home our planting concepts and to make these take root in their home countries.
Other than this kick-starter, we are planning to have 27 plantings this year that will add up to a grand total of 63,000 trees newly planted. The sessions will be held by individuals and organizations that have approved with the ideals of Creating Native Forest for Life. These exciting events will take place overseas as well, such as those by Sango Co., Ltd, which include the following places: Indiana in the US, China, Thailand, Indonesia, and Turkey. Through these activities we intend to share Akira Miyawaki’s ideas around the globe.
Your precious funding will be used for the following items: expenses to buy seedlings and materials used for planting (such as straw for mulch, ropes, stakes, work gloves, and so forth), videotaping and recording expenses, fee for borrowing equipment for the symposium (such as equipment for simultaneous interpretation), and for maintaining our website. We will use the money carefully and with great gratitude. If certain conditions are met, we will also apply it to digitalize Japan’s Vegetation, a 10-volume work by Dr. Miyawaki.
Tree-planting events are attended by many families, serving as ideal opportunities for parents and children to communicate intimately. Please come join us lightheartedly. It would be our great pleasure if you could share this page with other people and ask for their participation in this crowdfunding.

Aiming for a world where every person plants a tree a year

Thanks to many people, we have already gained much support and through this project we aim to reach a wider audience in order to plant as many native trees as possible in various areas. Spreading this unique Japanese method of tree planting, enlightening people about Chinju no mori (shrine forests), and to create more forests for life is what we are aiming for.
By sharing the same ideals for planting trees, we can help restore the Earth’s environment. If every person on this planet planted a tree every year, if every person shared this idea, the environment will change dramatically.
We will continue to follow Akira Miyawaki’s teachings and plant trees.
We hope you will join us in saving the world’s environment.
