Komera's Woods　 Who we are

 

We are a small nature school called Morinougakusha in its 15th year, located in Minami Aizu, Fukushima Prefecture.  We created a special program “Komera's Woods” for the children affected by the disaster of March 11, 2011.  (Komera means children in our dialect.)  Our purpose is to nurture the “roots” for life through the experience of living together at an “old Japanese-style house” and exploring rich nature in the surrounding environment.  We value and support their meeting one another, learning living skills and playing together, and feeling and developing emotions.  We held 25 camps so far, totaling to 1,000 overnight stays by children ranging from toddlers to high-school students as well as expectant mothers.

 

We are currently raising funds for the 2014 summer camps through the crowdfunding called [READY FOR?]!
With your support, the children from disaster-affected areas will be able to play in the mountain and at the sea without worries this summer !!

A questionnaire  carried out in January through March this year revealed that more than 96% of the parents who responded restricted children's play outside and experiencing nature after the disaster.  More than 71% said outside activities are still limited after three years.  There still exits this harsh reality.  It is our sincere desire to offer the children the “opportunity to play outside”, which was normal before the disaster, and to see more precious smiles on their faces.

What is READYFOR?

This is an online tool that enables you to contribute funds in support of our program via internet.  In return, supporters will receive “postcards”, “hand-made” miso made by children, or some other items.  We also want to go beyond fund-raising, and encourage our supporters to become “collaborators” to grow “Komera's Woods in Minami Aizu” together by deepening the relationship between us and you the supporters of our program.   

 

Before the disaster, it was part of a daily life for the people who live in the coastal area of Fukushima Prefecture to play in the Pacific Ocean spreading afar in front of them.  But they hesitate to do so to this day.  During the summer in 2013, we organized a 9 day-long ocean experience at “Sadogashima Island” in Japan Sea, the first camp at the sea after the 3.11 disaster.  As the summer was approaching, the children were getting anxious to get to the sea and rivers, and the parents also wished to soak in the ocean with the children.  This summer camp made it possible for them.  They jumped into the beautiful clear ocean water, swam, dived, caught fish and shellfish, and ate rice balls.  “All this was normal before.  Finally I was able to relax and have fun.  To get in the ocean.  I had not done this since the disaster.  Finally I was able to do one of the things I had been wanting to do.”  A mother murmured at the end of the camp.   I cannot forget her words.  After three years, the number of donations has gone down by 80%!.  The public is losing interest.  With this current situation, we won't be able to continue to operate “Komera's Woods” simply from a financial standpoint.  We would be most grateful for your concern and support, so that the children can continue to have moving experiences in the mountain and the sea, this summer and for the coming years.

 

[Important for Adults Too!]  “Komera's Woods” gives not only the children, but also us volunteers,  fathers and mothers the energy and strength to live.  This is a place where the adults learn a number of things form the children, and through the interactions in nature, new “awareness” is being born toward our future.  We will nurture “Komera's Woods” together with the children and move forward step by step.

There are similar online fund-raising services in the world, but READYFOR takes an “all or nothing” approach, and asks you to establish the minimum amount of funds needed to carry out a project.  So if you don't reach that goal, you won't be able to do the project.  Some services allow you to keep the funds raised.  But we chose READYFOR, to show our resolve to make it happen no matter what.
