自己紹介

 

はじめまして。「久野陶園をやっていく会」の佐々倉 文（ササクラ アヤ）と申します。今から14年前に「自分の作品・ものづくりで食べていく事」を決め、東京から茨城県笠間市に移住し、彫刻家として活動し生活をしています。

 

笠間市は明治から昭和初期にかけて窯業産地として栄え、「笠間焼」の歴史は今年2022年に250年を迎えます。その長い歴史の中で「笠間焼」「焼き物の町」「芸術の村」と周知され、陶芸美術館や、陶芸大学校もあり、現在では、陶芸だけにとどまらず、木工・金属・石・ガラス・織・布等、様々な素材を扱う作家や、アーティスト・デザイナーが集まり、年間を通じてさまざまなイベントや催し物が開催される等、地域の人々の心にも、豊かな文化がしっかりと根づいている町です。

 

私は、笠間という特殊な土地柄、そこに集まる人々、風土を日々肌で感じながら、ものづくりに携わる仕事の中で、笠間焼発祥の地「久野陶園」という場所を知りました。

 

笠間焼発祥の地・久野陶園

 

久野陶園とは、1772～1781年（江戸時代・安永年中）に、滋賀県信楽から来た1人の陶工がこの地（茨城県笠間市箱田・後の久野陶園）を訪れ、笠間藩箱田村の名主、久野半右衛門と焼き物を始めたという「笠間焼発祥の地」です。※江戸時代から続く窯元は他にも存在しますが、発祥の地として史実があるのは久野陶園のみとなります。

 

 

当時より製陶所としてたくさんの職人や商人と共に成長し、甕（かめ）・すり鉢・徳利・湯たんぽ等、当時の生活必需品を大量生産し、笠間市の産業としての「笠間焼」が生まれ、多くの窯元と共に笠間の文化を築いてきました。

 

 

久野陶園の本焼き用登り窯は14房にも及び、笠間市指定文化財に指定されています。2020年には、「かさましこ～兄弟産地が紡ぐ“焼き物語”～」を構成する 「 物語の始まり 」 の場所として日本遺産と認定されました。

 

また、工場内には大量生産体制のためのベルト式動力轆轤（ろくろ）（モーター駆動）等、歴史的文化資料としても貴重な設備や道具が数多く現存しています。それゆえに、行政機関等で、管理・運営してもらう方法も検討しましたが、現在は工場（こうば）側と母屋側でそれぞれ所有者が異なるため、現状では行政側での援助は難しいと言われています。

久野陶園を残したい

 

私が久野陶園を初めて訪れた時には、すでに14代目の伊藤慶子さんが個人作家として広い工場に一人、作陶をしている状態でした。窯業の後継者は無く、これまでも幾度となく、久野陶園の今後を危惧する声や、様々なアイディアはあがっていましたが、具体的な動きとなるには至らず、あっという間の13年。建物の限界もやってきました。

 

 

「このままでは、無くなってしまう。」

 

放っておけば、なくなります。それは何より簡単ですが、久野陶園を失う事は、笠間の文化の土台を失うに等しく、このままでは先人たちが歴史の上に積み重ね紡いできた「笠間焼の文化」「新しい笠間の未来」つまり、これから残す事で生まれるかもしれない新しい可能性やチャンスをも、失うことになりかねなません。

 

もっと久野陶園を知ってもらおう。

 

高いポテンシャルとエネルギーを持つ笠間の可能性を、ただこのまま失うのではなく、この貴重な歴史的文化遺産を後世へと残し、みんなの久野陶園、笠間の久野陶園として、ひいては「日本の文化遺産」として、何かできる事があるはずだと、数人の有志が集まり、「久野陶園をやっていく会」として活動を始めました。  

 

草刈り・不用品の処分・片付け・掃除、そして久野陶園をより多くの人に知ってもらうためのSNS投稿。

 

そして、文化をつくり育む場として、「文化発祥の地・久野陶園」の再生・存続を目標に、笠間・益子の陶芸家、作り手はじめ、たくさんの方々の協力をへて、クラウドファンディングへ挑戦するに至りました。

 

 

久野陶園を多くの人に愛され必要とされる場所に

 

一時的な修復・保存だけでは、数十年後、また同じ事の繰り返しになってしまう事や、久野陶園が存続していくための資金の仕組みをつくる必要性をふまえ、歴史的文化遺産の保存だけではなく、久野陶園に新たな存在価値を生み出し、多くの人に愛され必要とされる場所となるために、ギャラリー（フリースペース）と、cafeイベントスペースの創設とを計画しています。

 

そのために、皆様から頂いたご支援で、まず、老朽化した工場の屋根（トタン）を張り替え、断熱材を入れ結露を防ぐことのできる屋根に修復します。次に、2階倉庫を、ギャラリー（フリースペース）にリノベーションし、久野陶園の歴史資料の常設スペースと、展示会・催し物等を行うことができるスペースをつくります。そして、飲食店の出店場所としてのスペースをつくります。

 

 

創設後は、レンタルスペース・café・模擬店等の希望者を募り、年間のスケジュールを組んで運営し、そこで得る賃料を、久野陶園の維持管理費にあてます。

 

未来の日本の文化へ寄与する礎となりたい

 

ギャラリー（フリースペース）は、たくさんの陶芸家・アーティスト達の発表の場となり、笠間焼発祥の地から世界に文化を発信します。久野陶園の観光客・作家のファン・caféを訪れた方・地域の人々等、沢山の人が気軽に集うことができる場となることで、さらに「新しい文化が育まれていく場所」へと生まれ変わります。

 

そうすることで、みんなに必要とされる場へと再生し、多くの人に関わってもらう事で未来への存続を実現していきたいと考えています。

 

これは、いち地方の、小さな町のよくある話とも言えますが、このような問題を抱えながら、なすすべもなく消えていくしかない文化遺産がたくさん日本中に存在してる様に思います。それらの小さな文化が一つでも多く後世に残すことができるように、これら一連の活動が、いつの日か、「未来の日本の文化」へ寄与する礎へと発展することができれば光栄に思います。

About Me

 

Hi, I'm Aya Sasakura, a sculptor and a member of the "Group of Preserving Kuno Toen  (久野陶園をやっていく会)".  

 

Let me introduce a little bit about myself.

fourteen years ago, I decided to make a living by creating my works and moved from Tokyo to Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture, where I live and work as a sculptor.

 

Kasama City flourished as a major ceramic production area from the Meiji era to the early Showa era, and the history of Kasama ware (called Kasama Yaki in Japanese) will celebrate its 250th anniversary this year in 2022.     With its long history, the city has become known as "the town of Kasama ware",  "the town of pottery", and "the village of art".  There are also the Museum of Ceramic Art and the College of Ceramics. 

 

Today, the town is home to artists and designers who work not only with ceramics, but also with a variety of other materials such as woodwork, metal, stone, glass, weaving, and cloth, and various events and activities are held throughout the year.

 

As such, Kasama is a town where a rich culture is firmly rooted in the hearts of the local people.

 

Through my work as a craftsman, experiencing the unique character of Kasama, the people who live there, and the culture, I learned about the birthplace of Kasama ware, Kuno Toen (Toen means ceramic studio in Japanese).

 

 

Kuno Toen, Birthplace of The Culture

 

It is said that Kuno Toen was started by a potter from Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, who visited this area (Hakoda, a town in Kasama City) between 1772 and 1781 (during the Anei Era in the Edo Period).  He started pottery with Hanemon Kuno, a master of Hakoda Village in the Kasama Domain.  This is the beginning of Kuno Toen and Kasama ware.  This is why Kuno Toen is called the birthplace of kasama pottery(*).

*There are other kilns that have been in existence since the Edo period, but Kuno Tohen is the only kiln that has historical facts as the birthplace of Kasama ware.

 

Since that time, Kuno Toen has grown together with many craftsmen and merchants as a pottery factory, producing a large number of daily necessities such as jars, mortars, sake bottles, and hot water bottles.

 

 

In this way, "Kasama ware" was born as an industry of Kasama City, and Kuno Toen, together with many other potteries, has built the culture of Kasama.

 

The main firing kiln of Kuno Toen has 14 rooms and is designated as a cultural asset by Kasama City.

 

In 2020, it was recognized as a Japanese heritage site as the place where "the story began" that constitutes "Kasamashiko: The Story of Pottery Produced by Sibling Production Areas".

 

There are also many valuable historical and cultural equipment and tools, such as a belt-powered wheel (motor-driven) for mass production.

 

Therefore, we considered if the government could manage and operate the site, but the current situation is difficult for the government to assist because the owner of the factory and the main house is different.

We Want to Preserve the Kuno Toen

 

When I first visited Kuno Toen, only Keiko Ito, the 14th owner, was working alone in the spacious factory as a private artist.

 

Although many people were concerned about the future of Kuno Toen and many ideas came up, no real action was taken, and 13 years passed in the blink of an eye. 

 

The durability of the building has also reached its limit.

 

 

"If We Do Nothing, We'll Lose It."

 

Doing nothing is easier than anything else, but losing Kuno Toen is like losing the foundation of Kasama's culture.

 

If things continue as they are, we may lose the "Kasama ware culture" that our predecessors have created and we will also lose "new future of Kasama".

 

In other words, this is the same as losing the new possibilities and opportunities that might be born by keeping this kiln.

 

We thought let many people know Kuno Toen.

The high potential and energy of Kasama must not be lost.

 

There must be something we can do to preserve this precious historical and cultural heritage for future generations, as everyone's, Kasama city's, and Japan's cultural heritage Kuno Toen.

 

With this thought in mind, a few volunteers got together and started working as "Group of Preserving Kuno Toen". 

 

 

To make Kuno Toen a place that is loved and needed by many people

 

If we only restore and preserve the pieces temporarily, the same thing will happen all over again in a few decades.

 

It is also necessary to create a mechanism to generate funds for the continuation of the Kuno Toen.

 

Therefore, we are planning not only to preserve the historical and cultural heritage, but also to create a gallery, cafe, and event space in order to give a new value to Kuno Toen and to make the place loved and needed by many people.

 

To achieve this goal, we will first use the funds we will receive from you to replace the aging roof of the factory, adding heat insulation to the roof to prevent condensation.

 

Next, we will renovate the warehouse on the second floor into a gallery, creating a permanent space for the historical materials of Kuno Toen and a space for exhibitions and events.We will also create a rental space for restaurants.

 

 

After the renovation, we will invite those who want to use the rental space and café, etc., and manage them based on an annual schedule. The rent will be used for the maintenance and management of the Kuno Toen.

 

Usage of funds

 

- Roof restoration: 4 million yen

- Renovation of the second floor of the factory into a gallery space: 2.5 million yen

- Creation of a cafe and event space: 2 million yen

- Crowdfunding expenses: 1.5 million yen

We want to be a cornerstone that contributes to the future of Japanese culture

 

The gallery will be a place for many potters and artists to present their works, and to send out culture from the birthplace of Kasama ware to the world.

 

By becoming a place where many people, such as tourists, fans of the artist, visitors to the cafe, and local residents, can easily come together, Kuno Toen will be reborn as "a place where a new culture will be nurtured".

 

By doing so, we hope to turn it into a place that is needed by everyone and maintain its existence by having many people involved.

 

This is a common story of a small town in a rural area, and I think many cultural heritages all over Japan are facing a situation where they have no choice but to disappear with these problems.

 

We would be honored if our activity could one day contribute to the "future culture of Japan" so that as many of small cultures as possible can be preserved for future generations.
