今日は蓮の近況を見ていただければと思い、最近の動画をアップします。

 

１）この動画は、去年の12月のボランティアミーティングの後、蓮がみんなに歌ってくれた場面。ちょうどウィンクラー先生の訪問指導から３週間たった段階です。

 

蓮は、以前は話しかけてもほとんど返事をしなかったのが、訪問指導後にはNo! という返事は多いものの、ほとんど全てに何かしら答えてくれるようになりました！ミーティング中、蓮のNoにはいろんな意味があることを話し合い、音楽をリクエストされるので歌をうたうとNo!と言われるのも、一緒に歌いたいのではなく、蓮のパフォーマンスを聞いてほしいからだという事を話し合った直後の出来事です。

 

 

この日は、この直前にも嬉しいことがありました。

それまで蓮はうまく指差しができず、人の目をみたり名前を呼ぶことで相手の注意をひく事ができませんでした。でもこの日、新しく入ったボランティアさんを指差して彼女の名前を聞き、その後全員を順番に指さして、全員の名前を呼んでくれました。生まれて初めてです！

 

 

２）この動画は今年1月末に、蓮が初めてアイコンタクトで体験共有してくれた場面です。

 

「アイコンタクトで体験共有」って何？って思われるかもしれません。

私たちはふだん自分の関心事や体験を指差しや言葉、アイコンタクトで相手と共有します。これは共同注視と言われ、これが人のコミュニケーション能力の基盤です。通常は１歳〜１歳半頃に共同注視ができるようになり、自分と物だけの二項関係から、自分と物と相手という三項関係を持てるようになります。そこから言語が発達します。でも自閉スペクトラム症の人は、この機能の獲得が遅れることが多く、言葉が話せたとしてもコミュニケーションに困難があるというのはそれ故です。

 

サンライズプログラムでは、子どもがすでにやってくれていることをギフトととらえお祝いし、その意味を丁寧に伝えていきます。なのでプログラム開始してからは蓮と目があえば「蓮くん！お目々みてくれたね！ありがとう！」とまずお祝いしはじめました。以前は1日に１、２回、一瞬目があうくらいだったのが今ではとても全部お祝いできないくらい目を合わせてくれるようになりました。

この日はボランティアさんが昼間に来た時、それはもう何十回とアイコンタクトをお祝いしてくださり、すると蓮が嬉しくなって目をみるというゲームが自然とできて、長い間楽しそうに遊んでいました。その日の夜、蓮が絵本を読んでいたので近くに座ってお茶を飲んでいたら、本を読みながら何度も笑顔で私の目をみてくれました！What a breakthrough!

 

前回の訪問指導でウィンクラー先生にアドバイスいただいたことをチームで実施してきて、その効果の高さを本当に実感しています。感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。

Today we would like to show you Lenny’s recent progress, so we have uploaded two videos.

 

(Video 1) This video was taken at last year’s December volunteer meeting when Lenny sang for everyone. It was 3 weeks after Gerd Winkler came to our home for the Outreach.

 

Before the Outreach Lenny would rarely respond to us but after the Outreach he began to respond to most things we said although it was usually “No!” At this meeting, we talked about the different meanings of Lenny’s “no.” For example, we found that he would request a song and we would sing it for him, and then he would say “No! No Singing!” One of the volunteers suggested that “no” meant he didn’t want us to sing, but rather wated us to listen to his performance.

 

Just before this video was taken, there was another wonderful moment.

Up until then, Lenny could not point at objects very well – it came and went - and he could not look at people in the eye or call their names so that he could draw their attention to him. But on this day, he pointed at a new volunteer and asked her name! Then he pointed at everyone else in turn and named them. This was the very first time he was able to do this since birth!

 

 

(Video 2) The second video was taken at the end of this January – it was the first time Lenny expressed a shared experience through eye contact.

 

You may wonder what a “shared experience through eye contact” means.

 

Most people take it for granted without giving a second thought to this, but neurotypical people use finger-pointing, language, and eye contact in order to share interests with others, be it objects, experiences, or other people. This is called “joint attention” and it is the basis of communication. 

 

Most babies naturally start to acquire this ability around 12 months old, and from there language develops. The acquisition of this function tends to be delayed for people on the autism spectrum. This is why they have difficulty with social communication even if they have language.

 

In the Son-Rise Program, we perceive what the child is already doing is a gift and we celebrate it, telling them how much and what it means to us. So when we began our program, we started to celebrate Lenny every time he looked at us by saying, “Lenny, thank you so much for looking at my eyes!” Before we started the program, he would only give us fleeting eye contact, perhaps once or twice per day. These days we cannot possibly count the how many times he look at us because it is so many times!

 

On the day the second video was taken, a volunteer celebrated Lenny’s eye contact many times during her session. Lenny was so happy, and an eye contact game developed naturally, and they played for a long time and had lots of fun. That evening, Lenny was reading a book and so I sat close to him. As he read the book, he smiled and looked into my eyes many times!

 

This was a “shared experience through eye contact”! What a breakthrough it was!

 

I really felt the effectiveness of the advice Gerd gave us a the last Outreach, and I am so grateful to have experienced this for myself.
