Archive Project on Disability, Aging, Illness and Difference: Director Shinya Tateiwa's Legacy for the Future 
 
Project Introduction 
About the Institute of Ars Vivendi, Ritsumeikan University 
The Institute of Ars Vivendi, Ritsumeikan University was established after the adoption of the Global Center of Excellence Program by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2007 (its predecessor, the Research Center for Ars Vivendi, existed until 2018). In the five-year Global COE program, the Graduate School of Core Ethics and Frontier Sciences and the Institute of Human Sciences of Ritsumeikan University served as the core, where faculty members, graduate students, and research fellows collaborated across organizational boundaries to develop research and education (Ars Vivendi brochure). 
 
The Institute of Ars Vivendi is a core research center in Japan that conceives, proposes, implements, and develops "Ars Vivendi" based on these achievements. We also aim to strengthen ties with overseas researchers and communicate about "Ars Vivendi" domestically and internationally as the center of a global hub. 
 
What is Ars Vivendi? 
We, all human beings, live with disabilities, aging, illness and differences. However, until now, there has been little survey, analysis or archive from the perspective of those affected. 
 
Medical treatments and rehabilitation are basically aimed at "curing" illnesses and disabilities. Thus, "incurable" conditions are excluded from the scope of these studies. Then, one might say, we have a social welfare science for such people. But people with disabilities or illnesses live their lives even when they don't receive welfare. Knowing how they have lived and are living, and thinking about how they will live in the future - this is "Ars Vivendi". 

Main Activities 
◇Identify four groups of academic topics to be pursued with "disability, aging, illness, and difference" as the core. These topics include (1) contemporary history, (2) ethnography, (3) institutions and policies, and (4) science and technology of ars vivendi. We hold research conferences, workshops, and international seminars by developing and intersecting these four thematic groups. 
◇Disseminate our achievements through various media, including the bulletin Ritsumeikan Journal of Ars Vivendi, Ars Vivendi Journal, arsvi.com, SNS, and e-mail magazines in various languages. 
◇Archive materials of civil society organizations, such as newsletters of patients' associations and organizations of people with disabilities, and incorporate information from the archives into the Institute's activities. 
◇Conduct research exchanges and social cooperation activities with the participation of parties with disabilities, illnesses, etc. by using the archives. 
◇Promote research and social activities in collaboration with young researchers such as graduate students and PDs. 
◇In cutting-edge fields related to Ars Vivendi, we promote joint research and acquisition of competitive funding with domestic and international researchers, patient associations, NPOs, etc., and conduct research and surveys commissioned by public and private sectors with the aim of making social proposals and putting them into practice. 
 
What made us start this project? 
Disabilities, aging, illness, and differences such as sexual identity can happen to anyone, but until now there has been little research or archive from the perspective of those affected.The Institute for Ars Vivendi aims to become a global center for research and communication on life issues by creating, proposing, and practicing Ars Vivendi with the concept that all people live with disabilities, aging, illness, and differences. 
 
Director Shinya Tateiwa, who passed away suddenly at the end of July 2023, was one of the pioneers who established disability studies in Japan, always interacting with people with disabilities and illnesses, sharing information, and continuing research. One of the activities to which Professor Tateiwa devoted his life over the years was the activities of the Institute of Ars Vivendi, including the archiving of Ars Vivendi, international cooperation with a focus on East Asia, and the development of assistive technologies from the perspective of people with disabilities. In addition, he actively promoted the training of graduate students and researchers with disabilities or illnesses, and always acted from the side of people with disabilities and illnesses. We would like to continue Professor Tateiwa's legacy by crowdfunding the following project. 
 
Professor Tateiwa introduced the collected data on the website of arsvi.com. The site has been accessed by many people and has been widely useful. Many young researchers and graduate students of the Institute of Ars Vivendi have been involved in the operation of arsvi.com. The budget for the operation has been sustained by Professor Tateiwa’s own research budget. In the past few years, the necessary expenses have increased due to the growing need to publish and organize the collected data. 
 
We will continue to operate arsvi.com, but are faced with a situation where its operational funding is insufficient due to the passing of Professor Tateiwa, who was the representative of the research budget. This will make it difficult for us to stably update the website and to continue to collect and organize valuable historical materials. It is essential to continue the operation of the website, which has been running for more than 15 years, and to create an environment in which valuable paper materials can continue to be collected, organized, and preserved. 
 
How the funds for this project will be used 
A large amount of materials on organizations and social movements of people with disabilities collected by Professor Tateiwa are stored in the archives of the Institute of Ars Vivendi at Ritsumeikan University. Some of them are available on the website and in the archives for easy access. However, others are still in an unorganized state, and we have been organizing them for public access since before Professor Tateiwa passed away. We need to organize the valuable materials to preserve them for future generations in a form that is easily available for both researchers and people who are affected. Additionally, we have to collect materials which Professor Tateiwa had been working on the collection and was unable to collect. 
 
In keeping with Professor Tateiwa’s legacy, the Institute will build an environment that is accessible not only to researchers but also to everyone. We will first update the website’s aging server to make the website easier to navigate and enable continuous and stable updates. Additionally, we will digitize and preserve the materials we have collected so far, such as bulletins, newsletters, and commemorative publications of various organizations. We will also make some of these materials accessible to the public. Through archiving, we believe it is important to share understandings of the experiences of social movements and policy changes on disabilities and illness, and to pass them on to the future. 
 
How the funds for this project will be used 
◇To rebuild the arsvi.com website: 1,000,000 JPY 
◇Personnel expenses for digitization and other work (scanning, cataloging, updating PC data) 
　Hiring graduate students 1,400 JPY per hour * 5 hours * 2 days per week * 4 weeks per month * 12 months = approx. 700,000 JPY * 3 people = 2,000,000 JPY 
 
Project Outlook and Vision 
By developing the Institute’s project of collection, organization, and publication of historical materials on the social movements and organizations of people with disabilities, not only will related research be promoted, but it will also be possible to follow in the footsteps of Professor Tateiwa’s research. In addition, it will help to clarify Professor Tateiwa's stance of preserving the history and dignity of people who had no choice but to live as minorities in society due to illness and disability by archiving their history for future generations. We also aim to make these materials widely available to society not only on the website, but also through education, lectures, and publishing books, including Ars Vivendi series. 
 
Notes and precautions regarding this project 
•    We have obtained permission from the bereaved family of Professor Tateiwa to conduct this project and to use his photographs and videos. 
•    Donations to this project will be treated as a donation to Ritsumeikan Trust and will be subject to preferential tax treatment. Even if you live overseas, but you have income in Japan and file an income-tax return, you can receive a donation deduction.
