In October of last year, we proudly opened “HOTEL ECCLESIA” in Kyoto City, a hotel dedicated to social responsibility. While many modern hotels offer restaurants, souvenir shops, and galleries, our unique addition is a shared house specifically designed to support single mothers juggling the demands of work, child-rearing, and household responsibilities.

In Kyoto City, a prominent tourist destination facing soaring real estate prices and a rising population exodus, there are no dedicated share houses for single mothers. This challenging environment, marked by high rents and housing shortages, has made it increasingly difficult for single mothers to secure affordable housing for their families. In response, we envision a different kind of tourism—one that supports and uplifts rather than isolates. By transforming our hotel into a shared residence for single mothers, we aspire to foster a community that grows together with “children,” “mothers,” and “the community.”

Operating a shared house for single mothers involves significant expenses, including costs for furniture, appliances, children’s toys, and support staff. However, the only source of income is the rent paid by the residents. To address this, HOTEL ECCLESIA has committed to supporting the share house by donating 5% of our hotel room charges to the “General Incorporated Association Minami-Tsukushi,” which manages the facility. These donations will fund essential living expenses for the families, provide employment and educational support for the mothers, and facilitate enriching activities for the children, including sports and camping.

 

 

The reason for setting up the business.

In contemporary Japan, single mothers and their children often face social isolation due to insufficient support from government and public institutions. To address this, we have been working to establish a shared house where single mothers and their children can live together, embodying the biblical principle of “loving your neighbor.” Confronted with challenges such as ensuring the security of the residents and securing funding, we recognized the need for support beyond government consignment and donations. As a solution, we have launched a “social contribution hotel,” where a portion of the room charges is donated to the associated share house. We envision that this initiative, integrating the pleasure of travel and sightseeing with meaningful support, will foster a warm, supportive community. Through this effort, we aim to contribute to the empowerment of women and the sustainability of local communities, and work together towards achieving the SDGs.

About the project

At HOTEL ECCLESIA, select rooms are dedicated to single mothers, offering both private spaces and shared facilities. Each family enjoys the privacy of their own room, while also having access to a common area with a shared kitchen. This setup allows residents to connect with one another and engage with staff, providing opportunities for social interaction and support for daily and child-rearing concerns.

 

To accommodate single mothers at HOTEL ECCLESIA, we repurposed existing hotel rooms, but lacked kitchens in the private rooms. As a solution, we converted one room into a shared kitchen space. However, rising material costs have exceeded our budget, jeopardizing the continuation of this project.

To address this, we are seeking support through crowdfunding. The funds raised will help cover the renovation costs for the single mothers' share house, ensuring we can continue to provide this vital resource.
