Help me create an  izakaya with guest house with the theme of  “Matsuri” every day” in Yonago!

My  aim is to renovate an over 100 year old building and turn it into an izakaya and guesthouse in Asahi machi, the only drinking district in Yonago. Its name will be “Kirra Ya”, and its theme, “Matsuri”!! A place to gather, drink, enjoy and then to relax afterwards.

Izakaya + Guesthouse + Matsuri = Kirra Ya!

The concept is a “Matsuri pub” on the 1st floor, guest house on the 2nd floor (6 person dormitory + 1 private room)

The menu for the pub will include famous Tottori foods such as Daisen chicken and Tottori wagyu, seafood from Sakai port which boasts the highest catch of crab in Japan, and mountain delicacies from around Mt Daisen, plus edible wild herbs and home grown vegetables. Eat, drink and be merry!

For people who love to have a good time, the word “matsuri” brings a feeling of excitement. I aim for the same enjoyment, excitement and atmosphere that “matsuri” brings so our patrons can experience matsuri everyday!

In addition, just across the road you can enjoy delicious hamburgers at another of my shops, Kirra Point! While staying at the guesthouse take advantage of the short walk to enjoy the juicy hamburgers made with 100% Tottori wagyu, organic buns, and 24 types of spices, plus a wide selection of side dishes. Kirra Point has the atmosphere of a beach hut in the middle of the drinking district  for lovers of the sea, surfing and outdoors to get together.

For something completely different, I want Kirra Ya to be a mix of old style Japan and the best parts of abroad.  Just like guesthouses abroad, Kirra Ya will be filled with friendly faces saying hello, whether they be friends or strangers, where you can be carefree and enjoy and know there’ll always be someone to drink with and have a chat!

Following my Dreams! A 41 year old  child at heart!

Hi! My name is Kenji Watanabe and I’m proud to be the leader of this project. The main reason for creating this project was my feeling that I wanted to do something to help revitalize Yonago, where I was born and bred.

I’m a 41 year old that follows my intuition and is blessed by my connections with people. When I was 23 I lived in Australia and used my experience as a surfer there to open a dining and surf bar “Kirra Point”, named after one of my favorite surf points in Australia.  In addition, I also opened a beach house themed bar “Kirra +”

When I turned 30, I decided that instead of living for my own advantage as I had in my 20’s, it was time to start living to at least  try to be useful to others. With this in mind I started “Shelter” a project revolving around volunteer activities based on connecting fun activities with helping others in need both in Japan and abroad. Since starting, Shelter has provided support in various places including North Eastern Japan and Cambodia.

NPOs and charities can seem a bit rigid and stuffy but Shelter’s motto is for people to get together, have fun, collect donations and take them to those in need in person.

Shelter
Volunteering in Tohoku and abroad

Having been abroad many times, one of my dreams has always been to own and run a guesthouse, to build a place where travellers from abroad can come together not just to have fun but also a place where they can stay the night.

In Yonago there are very few guesthouses and even fewer  tour guides so unfortunately my hometown is an inconvenient place for visitors.

So, the solution became clear to me!  I should start a guesthouse and become a tour guide! And I knew the perfect place - right across the road from my other businesses was an old empty building. Trusting my intuition, I decided to rent the building.

Kirra Ya before renovations

That was all well and good but I realized that the condition of the building was worse than I thought and that the necessary renovations would end up taking a lot more time and costing more than 10 million yen!

So that brought me to crowdfunding.  Financial support from crowdfunding will not only help cover a part of the expenses, but it will  also help me share the charm of my beloved Asahi Machi and Yonago!

Revitalizing Asahi Machi! Showing the appeal of Yonago and Tottori!

While Asahi Machi used to be a lively district full of energy, people and good times, over the last 14 years of operating bars here I’ve noticed that recently the liveliness and vigour seem to have all but faded.

So, opening this guesthouse could be a good way to revitalize Asahi Machi not just by providing a place to stay for visitors wanting to enjoy the nightlife, but also by providing an insight into the charms of Yonago!

At the guesthouse we can introduce many wonderful spots around Yonago including the mountains, sea, and river, all of which can be reached within 15 minutes by car.

Surfing in the sea! So many famous surf spots

Skiing, snowboarding, camping in the mountains!

Canyoning and rafting in the river!

The pride of Tottori - Mt Daisen! Famous for winter sports and being one of Japan’s top 100 mountains, and one of Japan’s top 100 views.

Beautiful Mt Daisen
A starry sky in Tottori

Tottori Prefecture - a must see for travelers!

While it's true that Tottori is the least populated prefecture in Japan, and up until now has been mainly known for what it doesn't have,  it was recently voted as a must see area on the GaijinPot Travel site, and is slowly raising its level of recognition and spreading the word that in fact Tottori does have a wide variety of wonderful aspects.

Nature, people, smiles, connections, food….. the list is never ending of Tottori’s unique traits.

To help tourists see and feel these things Kirra Ya will also be able to provide tour guides for guests using the guesthouse facilities.

We can also connect guests with sites that offer mountain, sea, and river based activities such as surfing, SUP, sea kayaking, skiing, snowboarding, shower climbing, trekking, BBQ, and city walking.

This is my beloved hometown, and in any small way I can, I’d love to encourage everyone to come and experience it.  I can do this with your support for Kirra Ya!

Yoroshiku!!
