外国人が外国人を助ける仕組みづくり、外国出身リーダー育成講座

皆さま、こんばんは。加藤丈太郎です。続いての投稿も、講座内容紹介です。第9回・1月7日（土）についてご紹介します。

今回も講座内容紹介は、本講座を通じて、APFSにボランティアとして参画してくれた太田エマさん（イギリス出身）に、日本語と英語で、書いていただきました。あえて、日本語の修正はしていません。しかし、日本語で内容がよく伝わってきます。英語と合わせてご覧ください。

冬休みが終わってから2017年の初めての講座は1月7日に開催され、今回は「通訳者に学ぶ通訳のコツ」というテーマでした。まわりのコミュニティをサポートしたい外国の受講者として多くの参加者はもうすでに通訳や翻訳の経験があるのですが、その中様々な課題や悩みもあるでしょう。第9回目の講座ではプロの通訳者・翻訳者の山下里紗氏は特別なゲストとして通訳の基本的なところを徹底的に紹介してくださいました。プロとして山下氏は今のレベルまで達成するために様々な研修を受けたと思いますが、受講者はキャリアとして通訳者という道を考えている方が少ないと関わらず、山下氏が紹介したトレインイング方法を参考したら日常生活の中の通訳サポートを改善する機会になると思います。

多くの方が通訳と言えば言語能力がすべてだと思ってしまうかもしれませんが、もちろん言語能力がないと通訳するのが難しいのですが、山下氏はこの言語能力と知識、分析力、理解力、表現力と合わせないといけないと強調しました。日本語とその他の言語を完全にマスターしてもお話しの文脈やその内容の分析の力がないとただ「機械的」な直訳になってしまい、言葉の本来の意味がなくなってしまうという恐れもあります。その事例として山下氏は文脈が不明なテキストを出したら、受講者の中で以前にバレーボールをやった方の一人しかその文章が理解できなかったです。（バレーボールについてのテキストだったからです）経験と知識がないとすら内容を理解することが難しいのです。

通訳には必要としている基本スキルを確認してから山下氏はそのスキルを促進するトレイニング方法を紹介しました。毎日５～10分でもシャドーイングと音読の練習を続けると様々な表現や情報の流れに慣れるために役に立ちます。リテンションとリプロダクションのスキルと合わせればとても効果的な通訳ができるようになるでしょう。山下氏は受講生にチャレンジを投げかけて、それぞれの参加者は簡単な文章（短いものがあればちょっと長いものもあったのですが）を聞いてからすぐ口で繰り返してみるというタスクでした。山下氏本人も驚きましたが、多くの参加者はすぐ、完璧でその文章を繰り返すことができて、場合によって外国国籍の方は日本国籍の方よりより上手にできました。もう一つのアクティビティとしてみんなさんは長い文章をメモを取りながら聞いてその後できるだけ元の文章の近い言葉で同じように繰り返すというチャレンジを挑戦しました。メモの取り方、またリテンションとリプロダクションというスキルを活かす機会にもなりましたが、今回は多くの受講生にとって結構ハードル高い課題でした。一方、このスキルが得意の個人がただ一回だけ聞いてから元の文章とほぼ同じ言葉で説明できましたし、本来の通訳のスキルに役に立つ行為としてメモを母国語でとった方もいらっしゃいました。

他のエクササイズとして1ページくらいのテキストのそれぞれの段落のキーポイントをまとめて伝えていく作業もあり、また簡単な漫画を自分の言葉で説明するという課題もありました。今回はグループワークとして何人の参加者と相談しながら課題を取り組むことが可能でしたので助け合いながら新しいコミュニケーションも生まれてきました。9回目の講座の最初のころは少し個人の言語能力のテストとして感じてしまうところもあったかもしれませんが、他のメンバーと協力し合うことでお互いのスキルをレベルアップするためにどのようなサポートができるかということを考えるきっかけにもなりました。

お互いにサポートをし合いながら、学びます

Returning to the Community Leader program after the winter holiday participants took part in a consideration of the issues of “interpretation practices”. As foreign residents concerned to support their surrounding community the majority of participants all have some experience of interpretation and translation but within this of course meet many challenges. Our 9^th seminar invited as its special guest the professional interpreter/translator Risa Yamashita who provided a thorough introduction to the principles of interpretation. As a professional Yamashita has undertaken much training in order to attain her level of skill and while many of the participants may not be considering to follow the path of interpretation as a career these training processes may be refenced in order to further improve our interpretation support on an informal everyday basis.

Many people may think that interpretation may be based solely upon language ability, and of course this is the foundation of any interpretation ability but Yamashita also stressed the importance of combining this with A) Knowledge, B) Analytical ability, C) Comprehension ability and D) Expression ability. It is all very well to have full confidence in the Japanese language and that which you are interpreting between, but if you do not know the context of the discussion and are unable to analyze the information being expressed then it results in mere direct interpretation of words which can easily lose their meaning. Providing an example of this Yamashita shared an abstract of a text in which the subject was not immediately clear by its wording, but one participant who had previously played volleyball could immediately recognize what it was about due to his previous experience.

Having reaffirmed the key skills required for interpretation Yamashita then began to introduce training methods which can be used to develop these skills. She emphasized the importance of shadowing and reading aloud, even for 5-10 minutes a day as an effective way to familiarize oneself with different expressions and the flow of information, which when combined with retention and reproduction promotes a most efficient means of interpretation. Yamashita tested the class by challenging each participant to listen to a simple sentence (of differing length) and repeat it immediately after being told. To the surprise of Yamashita herself the majority of the participants could repeat word for word perfectly, even able to catch hold of challenging long sentences, sometimes foreign residents surpassing the skill of native speakers. Another task the class was given was to listen to a long text and attempt to take notes in order to reproduce its contents as close to the original as possible. This also proved a good opportunity to test skills in note taking, retention and reproduction. To many it proved most difficult to take down word for word the original text, but some specially talented individuals were able to repeat very close to the original after the first hearing. Others demonstrated their interpretation skills by taking notes in their mother tongue in preparation to communicate in this language.

Other exercises included paraphrasing by summarizing the key message of each paragraph of a given text and as well as explaining the story of a simple manga scenario. On this occasion the class had plenty of opportunity for group work and helping each other with the task in hand leading to a new level of communication between the participants. This class felt a little bit like a test of our language skill to begin with but by working together we could realize how to support each individual’s development in this area.
