さて、本日もISC66の実行委員の思いを届ける"OUR THOUGHTS"企画！！を行っていきたいと思います！

 

第2回目はISC66Table2のチーフを務める、グエン・ファム・ラン・フウォンです！！

 

Heyooo, I’m Phuong, table chief of this year’s table 2 - “Migrant Workers or Modern Slavery? When local labors meet global capitalism.” I come from Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam and now I’m doing my Master degree in the Netherlands. 

My involvement with ISC actually started from ISC64 - when I was a participant in table 2: Democracy and Global Order. Last year at ISC65, I was a table chief of (also) table 2: The Feminist Perspectives on Wars and Conflicts. Yet after 2 years with ISC, I still decided to come back to ISC66 - funny enough, this year, also a table chief of table 2. Mere coincidence? Fate? That I don’t know, but I do know that throughout these years with ISC, I have had tons of fun, great memories to look back, made amazing friends around the world and learnt many many new things. 

 

 

As the third time joining ISC, I saw many changes that have been made with the constant aim to improve the quality of the conference. At times I was part of the change-making process as well - and I am glad I was part of this little history. I remember my first year with ISC, policy proposal and submission to organizations were new to everyone, but now those have become one of the official directions, among others, that tables can choose to pursue. And even better, the committee is now 100% ready to support the tables with whichever format they choose to take. “It’s the little (and gradual) changes that matter most,” I believe.     

I have been trained as an anthropologist, but I love to read and learn from all kinds of disciplines - recently I started learning about political economy (a whole new world!) With this multidisciplinary background, I really try to balance the human-depth, grounded perspective with the structural, top-down view while constructing the topic and the table’s plan this year. I hope by having a holistic understanding of the situation, we can facilitate compassion without being too extreme with the systems and we can be practical without being “rational fools.”

I am excited to join another new chapter of ISC, and cannot wait to finally meet everyone in Osaka :>
