Introduction

Improve the learning environment at Nishitokyo Korean Elementary and Junior High School!

Renewal project of heating cooling systems.

Last year, Nishitokyo Korean Elementary and Junior High School marked 75 years anniversary since its foundation.

Our goal is to celebrate this anniversary by renewing air-conditioning systems at once, which often break down. We are promoting this project conjunction with Nishitokyo Korean Elementary and Junior High School Memorial Event Committee.

Why are we doing this?

Most people have no idea why and where Korean schools are, and what kind of education they provide. It may surprise you to know that there are 64 Korean Schools in Japan.

Our students are Korean children living in Japan. Although their roots are from Korean peninsula. By nationality, there are South Korean, North Korean, Chinese or Japanese. At school, they study Korean language, songs and culture, and learn about their history, nurturing their ethnic pride. Not only children, but also teachers are born and grew up in Japan.

The textbooks are compiled by ourselves on the assumption that we live in Japan for life. However, the standard of education is equivalent to that of Japanese public and private schools, and students are qualified to take entrance exams to Japanese universities.

The motto of the Korean school is "Those who know themselves can understand and respect others, and those who love themselves can love others," and the curriculum is designed to help the children can love themselves.

Our school once had more than 500 students. Currently, 107 students attend the school from the kindergarten to the middle school.

With the number of children and students decreasing, and with no public subsidies or support for education, the school is operating independently.

However, the burden on parents is heavy, and even with the supports from graduates and supporters, it is becoming increasingly difficult to operate adequately.

The equipment and educational facilities that would naturally be installed if we had received the subsidy are not sufficiently prepared.

In addition, the current school building is now 40 years old and has become decrepit. Some of old equipment are not working and have not been repaired.

15 years ago, in commemoration of the school's 60th anniversary, all classrooms installed air-conditionings, thanks to the support of the student parents, Korean and Japanese supporters. Air-conditioning system in school was not common at the time, so it was a great foresight considering the recent heat wave in the summer.

However, 15 years have passed, some of them are not working properly, such as no cool air coming out, or the compressor system failures. We repaired every time but it was endless effort and as they are old, the electricity bill is not cheap compared to recent models.

During the pandemic, we learned that it is too late to take action after something happened. As global warming progresses, it is inevitable that students will have to spend school life in the heat of midsummer.

We would like to improve the environment of education so that the Korean children can be proud of their ethnicity and can receive education in their own way, and safely.
For the health of the children and the development of ethnic education, we would deeply appreciate your cooperation.

How we do this?

We would like to replace the heating and cooling system that has already stopped sending cold air or the compressor has stopped working. With the recent pandemic, we also need to equip the classrooms with air purification systems.

It will cost about 6 million yen to replace the system in all the classrooms. We would like to raise 3,000,000 yen of that through this crowdfunding.

In addition to this campaign, we are also planning to conduct a fundraising to raise the necessary funds. If we are able to renew the system and still there are surplus, we will use it for improving the educational environment for the children and students.

Our vision

In 2016, the city of Tachikawa, where our school is located, declared as a "Multicultural living‒together〈Tabunka-Kyousei〉City", with the aim of realizing a community that mutually respects and enforces differences in nationality and ethnic culture.

Through this project, we want to introduce the Korean School to people who have never heard of it, and to convey the significance of the ethnic education in this country. We believe that this will lead to the realization of a "Tabunka-Kyousei" society in our daily lives.

Message from the executive committee

  卞尚道

(Chairman)

Annyon Hashimnica! My name is Naomichi Bian, the chairman of the project executive committee commemorating the 75th anniversary of the founding of West Tokyo Korea's First Elementary and Intermediate School.

Our alma mater, West Tokyo Chosun Daiichi Elementary and Intermediate School, has celebrated its 75th anniversary. I myself graduated from this school 42 years ago, and my three children learned a lot from this school and grew up.

However, the environment surrounding Korean schools is getting harsher year by year. Even so, I think it would be wonderful if we could get more people to know the actual situation of Korean school and walk together through crowdfunding as part of the 75th anniversary commemorative project.

While preserving the brilliant history and traditions that we have built up to now, we will do our best to unite your strengths and become a great force toward the new brilliant future of Urihakko through this commemorative project. We look forward to your support and cooperation for the future of children and for their smiles!!

  任大剛

(Executive Committee)

I am the committee member in charge of this project. The appearance of the children who are students going to school energetically, playing in the school playground, and greeting with a big smile is the vitality to live tomorrow.

We recognize that the existence of children is a treasure of the world that transcends nationality and ideas, not to mention the fact that we live in Japan. We believe that the success of this project is essential to protect the treasures of the world.Thank you for your support and cooperation.

We are cooperating with this project with a little effort.I am very honored to be able to cooperate for my alma mater and for my cute juniors.

Currently, I am away from Japan and living my life as a professional soccer player in South Korea, but the nine years I studied at West Tokyo Chosun Daiichi Elementary and Intermediate School have been very supportive.

I remember those days when I chased a soccer ball with my alumni like yesterday. For juniors! For children! Thank you for your cooperation!
