ハワイ日系二世兵士達の想いを継ぐ。アロハ桜を舞鶴で植樹したい

明日1/27〜2/5、フラキャンプも兼ねてハワイに行かせて貰います。
そして、ハワイの神様が日系ベテランズにも会わせて下さる事になりました！
出発直前に、感謝を込めて、この12年のハワイ日系二世との出会い、思いを書かせて頂こうと思います。長文お許しください。

なぜ、そこまで桜の植樹にかける情熱を持っているのか？

どうしてそこまでハワイの日系に対して思い入れがあるのか？

と質問してくれた友人がいたので、この機会に振り返ってみようと思います。

私がハワイの日系移民の歴史を初めて知ったのは今から12年前。中学を卒業した娘と初のふたり旅でハワイを訪れた時に、クチコミで評判のノースツアーに参加しました。
ワヒアワまでの1時間、日系移民の苦闘の歴史をガイドさんが熱く語ってくれました。ハワイの地でそんな想像を絶する御苦労と頑張りがあった事に胸がいっぱいになりました。

当時の私は、大家族の中で嫁として妻としてかなり息苦しさを感じながら暮らしていたので、乾ききった心に「辛抱」と「おかげさまで」の最も日本人らしい生き方が深く深く沁み入りました。

帰国後も、映画「ピクチャーブライド」や、関連本を夢中になって読みました。
その中の一冊「ブリエアの解放者たち」ドウス昌代著がきっかけとなり、
7年前、ヨーロッパの激戦地フランスのブリエアへ慰霊の旅に出掛けました。

高校生留学した娘のホストファミリーのお宅から、電車を乗り継ぎ片道7時間、そこからタクシーでさらに40分程のドイツとの国境にある小さな町に、娘と2人 今更ながら良く辿り着けたと思います。

ドウス昌代さんも泊まられた町で一軒のホテル・ルネサンスのオーナーが、私達の旅の目的を聞いて下さり、親切にボランティアガイドをしている友人を紹介して下さいました。

5才の娘さんを連れてジュホンヌさんは直ぐに駆けつけてくださり、激戦地の森から日系部隊に敬意を表す442通りまで隈無く案内して下さいました。
そして、「敵に勝利しただけでなく、人種差別にも打ち勝った日系アメリカ兵士に敬意を表する」と記された石碑の前で質問を受けました。

「あなた達はハワイから来た日系の子孫ですか？」
「いえ、日本から来た日本人です。」と答えると、
ジュホンヌさんは驚かれ、「ぜひ、日本でもこの史実を伝えてください。」と、50ページにも及ぶ英語表記の大事な資料を手渡して下さいました。

「私も、私なりに次世代へ伝えなくては」と鳥肌が立った記憶が蘇ってきました。

これが、ハワイの日系人の歩みを日本に伝えたいと願う、私の原点です。

しかしながら、50ページの資料を和訳する力も無く、日本で伝える方法も見つからないまま2年の月日が過ぎました。
考えた末、ハワイの日系社会の纏め役をされているハワイ天台宗別院の荒了寛先生にお役に立ててほしい資料がありますとお手紙を書きました。
5年前の秋、幸運にも会っていただけ、ブリエアの詳細資料をやっとお渡しすることが出来ました。
その時アテンドして下さった方と、442部隊のクラブハウスを訪れ、パンチボウルへの献花も果たせました。

その翌年、ハワイ日系二世へのインタビュー映画「Go for broke!」を製作された松元裕之監督とご縁を頂けた事がまたきっかけとなり、

4年前、イタリアの激戦地モンテカッシーノとアンツィオの米軍墓地を娘と訪れました。
イタリア在住の親切な日本人女性が、私の想いを汲んでくださり、献花まで用意して温かなアテンドをして下さったおかげで実現出来た有難い慰霊の旅でした。

その3ヶ月後、子宮がんを宣告されました。摘出手術を何とか終え、抗がん剤治療の前にハワイを訪れ、大自然にたっぷり癒され、日系の方々の生き方やアロハの精神に勇気をいただき、半年で元気を取り戻すことが出来ました。

「おかげさまで」の感謝の気持ちをカタチにしたいと、日本の桜をハワイへお届けすることを友人と思い立ちました。
3年前はハワイの気候に耐え得る桜の品種を見つける事も難しく、検疫許可については絶望的でしたが、

品種改良の末、香りの良い「春めき」を作られた桜植樹の師匠、古屋富雄さん、平和を祈念する「陽光」を作られた故高岡正明さんの息子さんの照海さんとご縁をいただき、

ハワイ桜並木小委員会のノリエさん、スーさん、そして多大なお力添えを頂く事になった小山鐡夫博士と出逢わせていただけた事で、夢の蕾も大きく膨らみ始めました。

検疫許可が下りるまで後もう一歩となり、今自分達が日本で出来る事に力を尽くそうと、国内の桜の植樹を細々と重ねてきました。

そして昨年、舞鶴の海上自衛官小田さんご夫妻とご縁をいただけた事で、「アロハ桜保存会」を立ち上げることが出来ました。

新たな植樹とともに、アロハの精神を示して下さったハワイ日系二世兵士達の物語をやっと伝え残す活動が始められます。

小田さんが発信して下さったアロハ桜植樹のニュースがハワイの日系の方々にも伝わり、植樹に合わせてジャパンツアーを組んで来日して下さる事になり、再び鳥肌が立ちました。

実は明後日から、ハワイのフラキャンプに参加する私を、ハワイの神様がヴェテランズにも合わせて下さいます！

この流れは、決して私の力では無く、ブリエアやモンテカッシーノで眠る尊い魂が導いて下さったのでは？と感じています。

なぜ、そこまで情熱を持っているのか？と問われると、良いご縁が次々とあったからとしか言い様がありません。

ただ、心の底から湧いてきた想いを諦めなくて良かった！と今強く感じています。

もう直ぐ、100大隊やMISの日系ベテランズのお年寄りとお会い出来ると思うと胸の高鳴りを止めることが出来ません。

ハワイを訪れる前に、大切な事を振り返り、12年間の記憶を思い起こさせてくれた友人にも心から感謝します。

When I visited Hawaii with my daughter who graduated from junior high school for the first time, I participated in a reputable North tour with a review. One hour to Wahiawa, the guide told the history of the struggle of Japanese immigrants hotly. My heart felt that there was such an unimaginable effort and hard work in the land of Hawaii.

At that time I was living in a large family as a wife and feeling quite a bit of stuffiness, so I thought that the most hearted way of living in "dry patience" and "thanks" deeply into the dry heart It was.

After returning home, I read the movie 'Picture Bride' and related books crazy.
One of them "Brier 's Liberals" Daus Masayo' s work became a trigger,
Seven years ago, I went on a memorial trip to France 's fierce battlefront Brier.

From my daughter's host family's high school daughter's home, I think that we arrived at a small town on the border with Germany for another 40 minutes by taxi from there, and seven hours by train.

The orner of Hotel Renaissance in the town where Daus Masayoshi stayed, heard the purpose of our trip, introduced a friend kindly doing a volunteer guide.

After thinking, I wrote a letter to Mr. Ara Ryokan the Hawaii Tendai Besso Besso, which is a part of the Hawaiian Nikkei society.
In autumn five years ago, I was able to meet you and finally gave me detailed information on Briea.
At that time I visited the clubhouse of 442 troops with those who attended and visited the punch bowl for flower arrangement.

Four years ago, I visited Italy's fierce fighting areas Montecassino and Anzio's US military cemetery with my daughter.
A friendly Japanese woman living in Italy was a fun memorial trip that I could accomplish thanks to giving me my feelings, preparing me a flower arrangement and doing a warm attendance.

Three months later, I was pronounced uterine cancer. After finishing the removal surgery somehow, I visited Hawaii before anticancer drug treatment, was healed plentifully by nature, received the courage of the way of living of Japanese people and Aloha spirit, I was able to regain my energy in half a year.

I wanted to express my appreciation of "thanks to you" as a form, I thought of sending Japanese cherry to Hawaii as a friend.
Three years ago it was also difficult to find cherry varieties that could endure the climate of Hawaii, despite the quarantine permission,

After improving breeds, born with Mr. Terumi son of Mr. Takaoka Masaaki who was made "Yoko'' master of Tomio Furuya, who made cherry tree planting trees, which made fragrant " Harumeki" .

Dream buds began to swell greatly as we met Ms. Norie, Ms.Sue, and Dr. Tetsuo Koyama who was supposed to receive a lot of help from Hawaii cherry blossom row subcommittee.

It is one more step until quarantine permission comes down, and now we have repeatedly planted trees of domestic cherry blossoms to do our best to be able to do in Japan.

And last year, I was able to launch "Aloha Sakura Preservation Society" by having a connection with Maizuru 's Maritime Self - Defense Force Koda and Mrs.

Along with new planting trees, we can begin activities to finally tell the stories of Hawaii Japanese Nisei soldiers who showed the spirit of Aloha.

The news of Mr. Koda 's aloha cherry blossom trees was transmitted to people in Nikkei in Hawaii, and the came back to Japan by organizing a Japan tour in line with planting trees, and the goose bumps faced again.

Actually, from the day after tomorrow, I will join Hawaiian hula camp, God of Hawaii will also match Veterans!

This trend was never my strength, did the precious soul sleeping in Briera and Montecassino lead us? I feel it.

Why are you so passionate? When asked, there is only a word saying that there was one after another.

However, it was good not to give up what I felt at the bottom of my heart! I feel strongly now.

As soon as I think that I can meet old people of the 100 battalion and MIS Nikkei veterans, I can not stop the high sounding of my chest.

Before visiting Hawaii, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my friends who gave me questions to remind me of important things and to remember my memory.
