Institute for Raptor Biomedicine Japan

The environment of our planet is currently facing a major threat in the form of human activity. Birds of prey occupy the top level of their ecosystems, a position that is most easily affected by environmental changes. We continue to strive every day to give as much support as possible to these raptors.

Our mission

At the Institute for Raptor Biomedicine Japan (IRBJ), we aim to create a mutualistic relationship with raptors that have become endangered by providing them with aid.

We start with the goal of releasing injured raptors to the wild after providing treatment and rehabilitation. We also scrutinize the causes of such injuries, and we elucidate whether they occurred by non-natural means. Moreover, we are engaged in "treating the environment", which means we translate the data we gather into preventative measures that strike at the root of any dangers to these raptors . Our activities at IRBJ focus on wildlife and environmental conservation from a myriad of perspectives.

Investigating Causes and Evaluating Fundamental Solutions

Collisions with vehicles or trains, electrical shock and electrocution, lead poisoning, and collisions with wind turbines. The technology that is so integral to our lives as humans is becoming an urgent threat to these rare birds of prey. In order to prevent their extinction, we must investigate the cause of each and every threat, and quickly take counter and precautionary measures.

Towards a Future that Allows for All Life to Coexist with Technology

We at IRBJ readily speak about the know-how we have gained through our activities. We are able to develop more advanced conservation policies worldwide by sharing information with researchers abroad and the future generations that will bear the burden of conservation. Furthermore, we work with any wild animals that could not avoid spending the rest of their life under human care due to illnesses or injuries that hinder their return to the wild, and they play an active role in our education and outreach programs.

Request for your support –

Since 2005, we Institute for Raptor Biomedicine Japan (hereafter referred to as IRBJ) have been involved in the conservation of endangered raptors, including treatment and rehabilitation of injured individuals in Hokkaido, Japan, as a project of the Ministry of the Environment.

Our activities are based on the idea that humans should take "responsibilities" for protecting wild raptors that are injured because of human activities for the enrichment of human beings. If any of such animals cannot return to the wild, then we should prepare an environment in which such animals are given a place to play an active part to realize “symbiosis” of humans and wild animals.

The scope of budget, however, is limited that the Ministry of the Environment provides for rescue activities of endangered raptors to a portion of the food and treatment costs only for some of the species designated under the law (Act on Conservation of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), such as Steller’s sea eagle, White-tailed eagle, and Blakiston's fish owl.

That means no support we could expect for various medical instruments necessary for the authentic veterinary care (including advanced medical care), treatment costs (medicines, surgery cost, foods etc.) for injured or sick birds that are not applicable to the above. IRBJ needs to raise money for such expenses as well as breeding cost for dozens of birds that cannot return to the wild, that play active roles in developing and testing the effectiveness of devices to prevent electrocutions and traffic accidents. They are also precious blood doners for injured individuals.

The support from you on this crowdfunding will be allocated to breeding expenses for life-bred individuals that cannot return to the wild, facility maintenance costs, and labor costs for IRBJ staffs.

Support funds over 5 million Japanese yen will be allocated to budget to purchase various medical instruments necessary for veterinary treatments, treatment costs for all injured or sick birds (not only the species targeted for conservation and breeding programs), repairing cost for the Land Cruiser as IRBJ’s official car, and the educational fee to enhance our activities et al.

We hope more people know about those endangered raptors injured because of human activities performed for human enrichment. They deserve better environment to play an active part for “symbiosis”.

We sincerely appreciate your kind understanding and support.

How the funds will be allocated
