『私たちは20年以上駐在員生活を送っているのアメリカ人の家族で、TIPSに通う息子は4人の子どもの末っ子です。子どもたちは全員アメリカ国外で生まれました（最初の2人はロンドン、あとの2人は香港で生まれました）。子どもたちはパスポート上では自分をアメリカ人と認識しておりますが、彼らは近年増加傾向にあるThird Culture Kid（子ども時代を両親の国以外で育った子ども）の一員でもあります。

 

息子の学校教育はデンマーク・コペンハーゲンのインターナショナルスクールから始まりました。3歳から小学校2年生までを過ごしたこの学校は非常に素晴らしい学校でした。学習能力の異なる生徒に平等で包括的な教育（インクルーシブ教育）の提供やサポートがあり、学校のコミュニティと一緒に成長する機会を豊富に提供してくれました。

 

息子は東京で小学校3年生を迎えましたが、残念ながらその環境はデンマークのそれとはかけ離れたものでした。私たちは東京のほぼ全てのインターナショナルスクールと面談をしましたが、息子の学習ニーズに対応可能な資格を持ったスタッフや専門の先生が十分にいないと言われ続けました。それは苦い経験でしたが、同じような状況にある他の親御さんも、私たちと同様の経験をされていることにも驚きました。

 

最終的に、新しく設立された無認可のSTEM教育を採用する学校に息子を入学させました。そして彼がその学校で頑張ってくれることを願っていた矢先、私たちはTIPSのことを知りました。校長の佐藤リン先生に連絡にしたところ、やりとりをして一週間もしない内に学校訪問に呼んで頂きました。あとは言うまでもありません。学校訪問では本物の温かさと優しさを感じ、そこにいた職員の方全員が、生徒一人一人に大いなる影響をもたらそうと努力していることがわかりました。また、息子はデンマークの学校の先生だったJP先生と再会することもできました。

 

息子は小学校4年生になったらTIPSに通うことになりました。そして家庭で専門家のセラピーを受けながら、ロックダウンも乗り越えて、なんとか無事に3年生を終えることができました。6月にはTIPSのサマープログラムに参加し、一番好きな美術の授業、その他4年生に向けての準備クラスを受講しました。そしていつの間にか4年生の初日を迎え、とても嬉しそうにTIPSに向かっていく息子の姿を見ることができました。その上TIPSは彼の学習環境を最適なものにするため、学校の時間割内に引き続き専門家のサポートを受けることを許可してくれました。

 

ある国から新しい国への引越しを繰り返した経験から、私たちは引越し前と同じ生活を再現できるとは限らないことを学んでいます。もしそれができるなら、私たち家族は今頃この駐在員生活をやめていたと思います。それぞれの新しい場所では毎回違う大変さとそこでしか得られない幸せがセットで付いてきますが、私たちが毎回の赴任で得られる共通する心地よさは、個々が成長し、人との繋がりを築き、その期間安心して暮らせる「ホームベース」（定着地）を持てることです。

 

息子が東京で生活を送る「ホームベース」を提供してくれたTIPSに、大変感謝しています。私たちは子どもたちに言っています。ひとつの場所に自分の根を張れる程長く留まることはできないけれど、私たちからのギフトは「世界を見ることができる翼」だと。そして次の出発に向けて、TIPSが息子の翼にさらに羽を増やしてくれていると感じています。』

Our son is the youngest of four kids in our family, and we have been American expats for over 20 years. All four children were born outside the US (first 2 in London, last 2 in Hong Kong). And though they recognize themselves as Americans by passport, they are part of the growing number of third culture kids who identify themselves more with the world than one country of origin.

 

Our son's schooling began at an international school in Copenhagen where he was part of mainstream IB curriculum from age of 3 until 2nd grade. The school was quite extraordinary. It had the capacity and support to provide students with learning differences, an equal, all-inclusive education, while providing copious opportunities for them to thrive alongside their school community. 

 

Sadly, our son's first year in Tokyo when he entered 3rd grade, fell far-and-short from his experiences as a student in Denmark. We interviewed with nearly every international school in Tokyo, only to be told that they did not have enough qualified staff or specialized teachers to address our child's learning needs. It was a bitter pill to swallow, but we were equally surprised to learn that other parents in similar situations had experienced the same difficulties placing their kids in Tokyo. In the end, we enrolled him into a newly established, but uncredited STEM school for his 3rd grade year, and hoped that he could make the most of the situation when TIPS came up on our radar! 

 

We reached out to Lyn Sato, and she invited us to visit TIPS within a week after our correspondence. The rest is history. We felt genuine warmth and kindness from the school visit, and we knew that everyone there was invested in making a profound impact on each of their students. Our son was even reunited with Mr. JP, who was a teacher from his school in Denmark.  We applied to TIPS for his 4th grade year, rode out the lockdown, and somehow finished his 3rd grade year without too much of a hitch. What his prior school couldn't give him, we worked extra hard at home with the help of specialists to provide specific therapies our son needed to stay ahead. He joined the summer program at TIPS doing what he loves best....art, followed by some 4th grade preparation classes. Before we knew it, the first day of school came around, and we saw a very happy kid riding off to school. The cherry on top was TIPS allowing his specialists to continue providing added support during school hours, in order to make his learning most optimal. 

 

With all the moving from one country to the next, we've learned that you can't always expect to relive the same experiences you left behind. If that was the case, I think our family would have stopped living this expat lifestyle by now. Each new place comes with its own set of new challenges and rewards, but the one common source of comfort that we do find with each new posting is a 'homebase' where one can grow, plant some roots, and be part of that moment safely. We are so thankful to TIPS for giving our son a 'homebase' while he completes his story in Tokyo. We tell our kids that we've never stayed in one place long enough to give them roots, but our gift to them is a pair of wings so they can see the world. And so we see TIPS helping our son to grow more feathers on his wings to set him up for his next flight!
