Our message behind IRUI project

About the Project

Hi everyone, my name is Kobayashi from Bonmax Apparel Co.

Thank you for visiting our project page.

Bonmax Apparel Co. has planned a fundraising project called “IRUI” to deliver a "clothing version of an emergency kit" to disaster victims in collaboration with four textile-related companies. We hope that many of you will read this article and support our project.

We want to deliver what is needed, when it is needed, to those who need it

Bonmax Apparel Co., Ltd. was established in 1967 as the first company to be invited to Rikuzentakata City in the southern part of Iwate Prefecture, and has been in business for 54 years.

Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, an unprecedented Tsunami hit the Sanriku coast. Rikuzentakata City is also on its coast and was devastated. Fortunately, our company was located on higher ground, so we were not directly affected by the disaster, but immediately after the earthquake, both our logistics and factories were unable to operate due to the disruption of lifelines. However, most of our employees were affected by the disaster and many of them had to go to work from the evacuation shelter.

The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, the Niigata-Chuetsu Earthquake, the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Kumamoto Earthquake, and the torrential rains in western Japan… In the past 30 years alone, countless natural disasters have occurred in Japan. You never know when, where, or under whom a disaster will strike.

When people come to evacuation shelter after a disaster, most of them bring only their clothes or a piece of clothing to keep themselves warm. If you are not able to go back to your home to get your own clothes, you will have to rely on relief supplies. However, it usually takes a few days to a week for clothing aid to arrive while food and evacuation supplies are distributed immediately.

Therefore we came up with the idea of this project to donate Polygiene BioStatic treated "clothing emergency kits" for local governments across the country to keep as a stock. This will enable the speed to deliver clothes at the time of emergency much quicker. The kit will be produced with the cooperation of Polygiene AB, a Swedish STAYS FRESH technology company and four of Polygiene’s partner brand in Japan such as: Showa Nishikawa, World, Naigai, and Bonmax.

About IRUI

IRUI means clothes in Japanese. We named it simple and easy, to be able to know what it is instantly in the case of a disaster. Aforementioned, this is a clothing version of an emergency kit that is designed to take care of both the body and mind. The kit consists of six items: T-shirt, shorts, socks, towel, mask, and slippers with a postcard of Mitsuo Aida’s poem. The color is only set in black to prevent any dirt from standing out. The kit will be available in two sizes: men's (free) and women's (free). It will be delivered in a compact compressed package to save space when stockpiled.

・T-shirts and shorts for men in size L and for women in size S.

・For socks, men's size: 25-27cm, women's size: 21-23cm

・Individual size (when compressed): 400 mm (length) x 280 mm (width) x 50 mm (height)

All items (except postcards) are treated with Polygiene BioStatic™️, Stays Fresh and odor-free treatment. In addition, the masks are treated with Polygiene ViralOff™️, which will reduce the number of virus on its textile.

About Polygiene’s Technology

Polygiene BioStaticTM:

Biostatic Stays Fresh technology stops the growth of odor-causing bacteria and fungi in the material. Which makes products stay fresh and hygienic. As several treatments can be simultaneously applied at the finish stages of the fabric production process, no additional water or energy is needed and the impact on the environment is reduced.

Polygiene ViralOffTM:

Polygiene ViralOff® is a brand for a treatment of textiles and other products. The performance is proven to reduce tested viruses* by over 99% on the material in two hours as per international standard ISO18184:2019 (SARS-CoV-2, H3N2, H1N1)

We have seen some evacuation centers do not have changing rooms or washing machines, and even if they do, there are problems such as not being able to hang laundry due to the eyes of people. Even though the clothes can be washed, you may not be able to dry due to lack of privacy zone. Polygiene Biostatic's excellent antibacterial treatment will keep the clothes stay fresh, so it can be worn for a long time and the number of times the clothes need to be washed will be reduced.

Project flow

Each item in the kit will be purchased from each project partner brands using funds raised through this platform.

Bonmax Apparel will compile the kits and donate them to each local governments and supporting companies across the country to stockpile in preparation for emergencies. By delivering the kits to the victims as soon as a disaster occurs, we will build a system that allows the project supporters to indirectly help the victims.
