The Kamikatsu Thatched School is an organization that provides experiences and lessons of traditional life at the former Hanano Residence. The Thatched School is located in Kamikatsu, Tokushima, Japan. Kamikatsu is the first town in Japan to have a zero-waste declaration.  Kamikatsu is located in a mountainous area about an hour's drive from Tokushima City. The settlement known as Yaeji is located in the deep mountains. Visitors are often surprised to find people living in such a remote place! Kamikatsu is facing depopulation and aging with over 50% of the population above 65 years old. However, Kamikatsu is a beautiful place that has been selected as one of the "100 best villages in Japan”. The terraced rice paddies of Yaeji is truly unique site.

Terraced rice field in Yaeji

The former Hanano residence stands in a wonderful location overlooking the terraced rice fields. The former Hanano residence, now Kamikatsu Thatched School, was first constructed it reflected a typical, private farmhouse. Over the structure of the house changed and eventually the house become abandoned. In 2012, a group of residences I the town decided to repair and replace the roof of the vacant house with the aim to revitalizing the community.

The local meisters in Kamikatsu came together to help restore the abandoned house and repair the thatched roof. There were mounting concerns it was their aim to reconstruct the house. In 2020, we decided to establish a new organization, the “Kamikatsu Thatched School” and since then we have been working to maintain the roof and house, and ultimate support the revitalization of the village.

We use the word “school” because it is a place where people can learn all kinds of things. The locals share the games they used to play when they were children and how to make daily necessities from natural materials. They teach about farming, forestry, fishery, wisdom that is necessary for living in the mountains. Many of the local grandfathers who teach the guests say, "Now I can still teach them about my past”. The elderly are excited to be able to pass on their knowledge, experiences, and skills.

A symbol of the community and a home for everyone  The amazing thing about the former Hanano residence is that the roofing was not done by professional thatchers but by local people. Using materials procured in the area and based on the methods they used when they were young the re-construction was possible. There are thatched roofs all over Japan, and each has its own characteristics in terms of materials, shape of the ridge, and thatching method. When thatched roofers from other prefectures came to observe and introduce other thatched roofs to us, they were surprised by the uniqueness of the roof. The locals enthusiastically explained about their methods and way of thinking. This roof is part of their their identity and a symbol of their community.

In Japan, thatched houses are often designated as cultural assets, and in many situations, people are only allowed to observe them as they would an art piece in a museum. However, the former Hanano Residence is a space that can be used freely and meant to be enjoyed. Before COVID-19, we had monthly events and people from the city would also come to enjoy the thatched house. The guests from the city would often say things like, "This is the first time I've been here, but somehow it feels so nostalgic," or "It's like visiting my grandmother's house”. We are very happy to hear the feedback and the positive impact it’s had on individuals. It is with pride and joy that people can experience this traditional way of living and play in the nature. This is an experience that is harder and harder to find these days. Hearing sound of people enjoying the thatched house is what keeps the local people motivated.

▼ The thatched roof was in trouble

Several years when we observed the roof we realized that we don't have enough material and the roof is not thick enough. Our worries materialized and the roof gradually began to leak. In 2019, we did a repair called "inserting thatch," but that's when we noticed that the structure of the roof was on the verge of rotting. During the rainy season the roof it leaked a lot and the damage continued to spread. It is a critical moment to restore the roof.

The part of the roof that I tried to repair.

We started collecting thatch in 2019, and this is the third year of harvesting and storing. In February 2021 we had 1000 bundles so we were determined to to rethatch. That's what we had planned but we had no choice but to postpone the project to the following year, as many of the local leaders who has the knowledge to thatch the roof got injured or sick, one after another. The situation became grave when the primary thatcher, who had been the driving force behind the project, passed away suddenly in April 2021.  The news of his death caused a sadness in the town....It’s hard to express my sorrow but this is the reality of the depopulated and aging town. The people who have important skills and knowledge will not stay forever. Due to the decrease in the number of people with knowledge of thatching as well as the primary thatcher who passed away, we lacked instruction how to the entire process. This time we reached out to a contractor who does thatching in the Iya Valley area of Tokushima Prefecture. The contractor agreed to guide us in the re-thatching and provided us with a reasonable quotation.  Even so though it was a reasonable quotation, the total amount of money we need was about 2 million yen. We managed to source 500,000 yen by ourselves. We are asking for a portion of the remaining 1.5 million yen through this crowdfunding campaign (All or Nothing method). Even if we don't achieve this goal, we will still go ahead with the rethatching the roof. The re-thatching will not end with this one time, and the other three sides will be replaced soon. The market price for thatched roofs is said to be 15 to 20 million yen when the materials and work are outsourced and the entire roof is replaced. In order to maintain the roofs, we need to be able to procure the materials and replace the roofs ourselves. Time is critical because we feel like we only have a few chances to inherit the skills from our grandfathers and elders.

▼ Roof replacement is a laborious task

Thatching a roof with thatch is a laborious and timely process, especially for those who have never experienced it.  The first step is to secure the materials. It is said that it takes 1,000 bundles of thatch to replace one side of the roof. Unlike in the past, when most houses had thatched roofs and the community had a common thatching ground, the first step is to find a thatching ground were the thatch year after year. The mowed thatch is collected and tied by stripped of vines to create a bundle that is about 20 cm in diameter. The completed bundles are transported to the storage area and stored. Every year, we try our best to collect 300 to 400 bundles, so it is a long and tedious project that will take four years. So far, we are grateful for the help we received from many volunteers.

Cutting the thatch

We cut and collect thatch for the roof every year, which is hard work.

We can't drive to the storage area, so we'll have to transport it manually.

We also need a lot of bamboo for the roof framework and to bind the thatch. Hundreds of bamboos of uniform thickness and length are cut down in the same season.

Once the materials are in place, it is time to start the thatching process, which is traditionally done in late February when there is little rain since the entire roof is removed. While the actual re-thatching is laborious, a lot of power is also need to prepare the thatch on the ground and pass it up to the top. Other help to collect and dispose of the thatch. In the old days, people from each house in the village would come out to help, and they would maintain the roofs of everyone in succession, “this house this year, that house next year” and so on. This culture of mutual help and support is called "Temagai" in Kamikatsu. It's a way of paying each other back through labor, not through money.  Since the Hanano residence is currently the only thatched roof in the town, there is no one to come and replace the thatched roof. The 2012 revival of the thatched roof was completed because of the commitment of the elders, who had inherited the knowledge and skills of thatching, and generosity of volunteers to help with the labor.

Thanks to all the Hanano Residence supporters who are willing to help. Because of your support we will probably be able to secure enough volunteers this time as well. We hope that the people who donate to this project can one day visit the Hanano Residence and Kamikatsu. I think this is an important time for us to come together and support one another.

▼ Details of the project This time, the most severely damaged north side and the roof will be re-thatched for about two weeks starting February 10, 2022. The first step is to build scaffolding to ensure safe work.

North side of the new roof

The old thatch will be removed. This thatch will not be wasted, but will be transported to be used for making soil for the terraced rice paddies and fields.Since we will be repairing the ridge of the roof, we will also remove some of the upper thatch from the south side. Once the old thatch is removed, new thatch will be put on.

On the ground, we checked and retied the bundles of thatch to make sure they were uniform in thickness and cut them in half to make them easier to thatch. There is another team on the roof using large needle-like tools to sew the thatch to the framework. The thatching is completed in layers of thickness.

Once the thatching is completed to the top, the ridge is made (this is the most important part), and the final trimming is done.

▼ Prospects and visions for the project If the ridge can be repaired with this method of re-thatching, we can stop the leaks for the time being. People will be able to use the house without worrying about whether it is safe during heavy rain.  Since the village is full of elderly people, we have not held any events during the COVID-19 pandemic, but we have resumed the private use of the old Hanano residence with small groups.  Guests are invited to cook rice in traditional way while enjoying the scenery of the terraced rice paddies. You can also fish for local river fish like “amego” and grill it on the sunken hearth, or you can just relax while listening to the sound of wildlife.

The secret to making the fish taste good is to cook it slowly and without rushing to let  the water evaporate.

In the summer, there is a lot of activity for families and children such as “Nagashi Somen”.  When the rice paddies are flooded with water, flowers and other living things are thriving.  Since Yaeji is the uppermost part of village, the water is extremely clean--coming directly from the mountains. The water flowing by the rice paddies is a wonderful place for children to play.

The terraced rice fields of Yaeji produce rice with drinkable water. This area is also home to a wide range of plants and creatures!

There is a restroom, but no bathing facilities, so it cannot be operated as an accommodation, but you can pitch a tent on the premises and watch the starry sky at night, or greet the sunrise coming up over the terraced rice paddies.

There are almost no outside lights, so you can enjoy the complete night sky.

The morning sun brings feelings of stillness and calm—surrounded only by the sounds of nature.

Recently, we have begun to manage the terraced rice fields (the largest rice field in the village) that was maintained by the late first headmaster. With the help of many people, we protect the scenery from the old Hanano residence. We want to:

・Provide opportunities for people who want to experience agricultural work at the rice fields

・Maintain the diversity of plants and animals by caring for the terraced rice fields.

I would like more people to learn about the current situation of depopulated areas and the significance of maintaining the terraced rice paddies.

We are surrounded only by the sounds of nature and living creatures--it is a cleansing experience for your body and mind.

Kamikatsu Town's zero-waste system attracts attention for its intensive recycling system, but the most important thing about waste is to not produce it in the first place. The concept of not producing waste and utilizing local material is the central philosophy of “satoyama”, which has been practiced for a long time.  At the Kamikatsu Thatched School, you can learn about the wisdom that is being passed generation after generation. You can experience both the joy and challenges of living in nature. There is a need for such a place in our modern world.

We would like to ask for your support cooperation in preserving Kamikatsu’s only remaining thatched roof and the “satoyama” landscape, which is the embedded identity of the elders.
