初めまして。岡山県で東日本大震災復興支援の朗読を続けている『おはなしのWA♪』の代表　江草聡美と申します。

私たちは同じ放送局出身の女性アナウンサー6名で2011年から活動をスタートさせました。

 

8月『平和』10月『味覚の秋』12月『クリスマス』3月『震災関連』など毎回テーマを決め開催し、来年3月11日の朗読会で35回を数えます。

「晴れの国おかやま」に起きた豪雨災害を『絵本』にして伝えたい！

 私たちが暮らす岡山県は「晴れの国おかやま」をキャッチフレーズにしているほど自然災害が少なく、果物を始め食材が豊かで、暮らしやすさが自慢でした。

 

 そんな大好きな岡山県を、平成30年7月6～7日にかけて豪雨が襲いました。

 

 倉敷市真備町では小田川などが決壊し、町が濁流にのみこまれ、真備町51人（岡山県内61人）の犠牲者を出す大災害になってしまいました。

 

 

 

　　

　実話を元にした『絵本』が人々の心に響く！『絵本』の力を信じて。

 私たちは、これまでの朗読会を通して東日本大震災で実際に起きた出来事を伝える数々の素晴らしい『絵本』と出逢いました。

 

☆大川小学校の亡くなった生徒の保護者が思いを綴った『ひまわりのおか』

☆奇跡の一本松を題材にした『希望の木』

☆流された松の木からバイオリンを作った『松の子　ピノ〜音になった命〜』

☆原発で避難を余儀なくされた飯舘村の『がんばっぺ　までいな村』…

 

実話に基づいたお話は、多くの人の心に響き、読み終わったあとは奥深い優しさに包まれます。これらの『絵本』は、被災の実態だけではなく、思いやりの心、そして命の尊さに気付かせてくれました。

 

　たかが『絵本』　されど『絵本』

 

私たちは『絵本』が持つ、時空を超えた強さと優しさを知っています。

『絵本』が持つ、共感力と普遍性を信じています。

 

だからこそ「西日本豪雨災害」も『絵本』にして語り継いでいきたい…

この出来事を全国の人たちにも、次の世代の子どもたちにも伝えたい…

 

 そのようなことを考えていた矢先…

 

 

 

偶然、私の知り合いから、

被災したロングコートチワワの兄弟犬（Brothers　Dog）の話を伺いました。

  倉敷市真備町で暮らしていた仲良しのロングコートチワワの兄弟犬　

チョコ＆ミルク。

 

2018年7月7日未明に襲った大水害で、下のゲージにいた弟ミルクが浸水。上にいて異変を察知した兄チョコは必死に鳴いて飼い主に助けを求めました。

そのときミルクの鼻先まで水位が迫っていたそうです。

 

助けられた2匹は、家にいたおじいちゃん、おばあちゃん、小学5年生の男の子とともに屋根の上で救助を待つこと7時間。

 

その後、避難所から親戚の避難先に移るも、兄チョコが極度のストレスのため永眠。 兄に命を救ってもらったミルクは、今でも朝晩兄を求め泣いている…

という内容でした。

「ぺット、特に小型犬はストレスに弱く、幸い命が助かっても、その後ストレスを抱えて亡くなるケースは珍しくない。」　

 

このことを「自分も犬と一緒に東京で暮らしているので、故郷岡山のために何か被災したペットのための支援がしたい！」と申し出てくれた友人から聞き、私はペットたちの命の儚さと繊細さを初めて知りました。

 

　　　

また、これまでの被災地でもそうであったように、西日本豪雨災害でも「ペット同伴の避難」に関して様々な問題が浮き彫りになりました。

 

辺り一帯が浸水し、なかなか水が引かなかった真備町では、ボートや手漕ぎの船による救出を待つしかなかったのですが、

 

「ペットがいるから」と断られたり、ペットが水を怖がって暴れ全員カヌーから転落してしまったり、（のち全員救助）、

避難所に行くもペット同伴を断られたり、逆に他者への遠慮から自宅にとどまり避難が遅れたり…

 

幸い、真備町の隣の総社市がいち早くペット同伴の避難所を開設して徐々に支援体制が整いましたが、飼い主の皆さんの心境はいかほどだったか…。

「このチョコとミルクの実話をもとに絵本を作りたい！」

 

おはなしのWA♪のメンバーに相談すると、二つ返事で「やりましょう！」という嬉しい答えが返ってきました。

　　

そこで2018年9月初旬、

真備の水害を伝えペットの支援につなげる絵本製作

「Brothers Dog Project」が立ち上がりました。

 

現在、おはなしのWA♪のメンバー以外にもサポーターとして協力してくださる方々も増え、デザインやSNS、チラシ印刷等チームで準備を進めています。

 

また、絵本の文章は、私たちおはなしのWA♪で制作します。「読み手」である私たちにとって、書くことは初めての挑戦です！あまり深刻にならず、二匹の会話にユーモアを交えながら、動物の中に人間の有り様が描かれる内容にしていきます。

　　

 

また、ロングコートチワワの兄弟犬チョコとミルクの実話をベースに、ペットの有事の際の備えや、災害時におけるペット同伴の避難の在り方などを盛り込みつつ、

必死に鳴いて弟を救おうとした兄弟の絆、命の尊さを、わかりやすく、親しみを持っていただけるSTORYにしていきます。

   We’ve Held Recitals to Support the Recovery from the Great East 　　Japan Earthquake--What Next?

 

　　

Hello. My name is Satomi Egusa and I’m the representative for “Ohanashi no Wa♪”, based in Okayama Prefecture, which has held recitals to support recovery efforts for the Great East Japan Earthquake.

All six of us are female broadcast announcers, who started these activities in　2011．

 

We decide a theme for every recital, such as “Peace” for August, “Autumn, Full of Flavors” for October, “Christmas” for December, and “Earthquake-Related Stories” for March. The next recital this October will be our 33rd.

 

At every recital venue, we have a collections box set up, and we donate all proceeds to areas affected by the Great East Japan

Earthquake.

 

 

We’ve been able to keep holding these recitals with the support of musical guests and our many volunteers who agree with our ideas: “Lessons Learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake Disasters” and “Conveying the Importance of Disaster Readiness”.

 

We want to share the stories of the torrential rains in “The Sunny Land, Okayama” with a picture book!

 

In Okayama, where we live, there are so few natural disasters that it’s earned the nickname of “the sunny land”. We can boast of our plentiful produce, especially fruits, and about how easy it is to live here.

 

Our beloved Okayama suffered torrential rains from July 6-7, 2018.

 

In Mabicho, Kurashiki City, the Oda River was destroyed, the town was drowned in floods, and 51 lives (61 deaths total in Okayama) were lost in the disaster.

 

 

We Believe in the Power of Picture Books!

Picture Books Based on True Stories Resonate with People’s Hearts.

 

Through our recitals, we’ve seen many wonderful picture books that share things that actually happened during the Great East Japan Earthquake.

 

☆“A Field of Sunflowers”, where the caretaker of Ookawa Elementary students who died wrote down their memories.

 

☆”The Tree of Hope”, based on the story of a lone pine tree that miraculously survived

☆”Pino, the Child of Pine Trees”, about a violin made from pine trees that washed away

☆”Ganpappe, Madeina Mura”, about Iitate Village, forced to become a shelter for Fukushima refugees ...

 

 

 

Stories based on real events resonate with many people. With our picture books, which surround you with a deep kindness once you’re finished reading, you don’t just learn about what it was like during the disaster--you also learn about people’s thoughtfulness, and you pay attention to how precious life is.

 

 

“Mere” Picture Books     “Just” Picture Books.

 

 

We know that picture books carry a strength and kindness that surpasses space and time.

We believe in the empathy and universality found in picture books.

 

 

That’s why we want to use picture books to pass on the story of the West Japan Torrential Rains…

We want to share what happened to everyone in Japan, and to the children of the next generation…

 

And just when we were thinking of doing so...

 

A friend of mine suddenly told me about a pair of dog brothers, long coat Chihuahuas, who suffered in the disaster.

 

Choco and Milk were two long coat Chihuaha brothers who were very close, and who lived in Mabicho, Kurashiki City.

 

 

On the evening of Tanabata Day, July 7, 2018, in the midst of major flooding, the little brother Milk was stuck in water in the lower cage. The older brother Choco, who was on top and noticed something wrong, cried out desperately to his family for help.

At that point, the water had risen all the way up to Milk’s snout.

 

The rescued dogs were brought to the roof by the grandfather, the grandmother and a fifth-grade boy in the house, where they waited for rescue for seven hours.

 

 

Afterward, even when they’d safely been evacuated to a shelter, the older brother Choco had suffered so much that he passed away from the stress.

Milk, whose life had been saved by his older brother, still cries out for him, morning and night…

 

That’s the story.

 

 

Pets, particularly small dogs, are susceptible to stress. And many of them die afterward from the stress, even if they were luckily saved.

 

When a friend told me “I also live together with my dog in Tokyo, so I want to do something for the pets in my hometown of Okayama!” that was when I first learned about how precious and fragile the lives of our pets are.

 

Also, just like how we’ve been affected by natural disasters, the various problems that pets face in evacuating, as they did even in the West Japan torrential rains, were made starkly clear to me.

 

In Mabicho, with the neighborhoods submerged in floods and unable to drain the water, they could only wait for rescue in boats or canoes.

 

But many were turned away because they had pets. Some pets were scared of the water and capsized canoes with everyone inside, (and everyone saved). Some were turned away from shelters because of their pets, and some were late to be recused because they refused to leave their homes...

 

Luckily, the city next to Mabicho, Soja, was the first to open a shelter where people could stay with their pets, and bit by bit a support system was set up. However, you can just imagine what the pet owners must have felt at that point.

 

The Dog Brothers Project Begins, Together With Our Supporters!

 

We Want to Make a Picture Book Based on the True Story of Choco and Milk!

 

I discussed it with the members of Ohanashi no Wa♪, I got two replies with the happy answer of “Let’s do it!”

 

So, in early September 2018, we started the Dog Brothers Project to make a picture book, sharing the story of the floods in Mabicho and supporting pets.

 

Right now, even outside Ohanashi no Wa♪, the number of supporters working together with us is on the rise, and we’re working on preparations with a team, such as for the design, social media promotion, and printing fliers.

 

 

We at Ohanashi no Wa♪ are also going to write the story.

It’s a first for us to write a story, when we’re usually the ones who read them!

 

Based on the true story of the long coat Chihuahua brothers, Choco and Milk, we want this to be an easy-to-read and friendly story that shares how you can prepare your pets for an emergency, and how you can evacuate your pets when disaster strikes--but also a story about the bond between the dog brothers, who cried out to save the little brother, and the preciousness of life.

And all the proceeds made from this book will be donated to funds and support organizations that support pets in disasters and rescue animals.

 

Also, one year after the West Japan torrential rains, on July 7, 2019 we will hold a complete reading recital of the book.
